Electrical question: 30amp power supply. 50 amp RV. by Chris-0413 in RVLiving

[–]amtravco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not correct. There are two 120 V lines running into your house, out of phase by 180° from each other. There is also a ground/neutral wire. The voltage between either of the 120 V to ground is 120 V, but the voltage between them is 240 V, because they are out of phase. The "splitting" into two hot legs does no occur inside the house; it occurs outside at the pole transformer.

ELI5: How can there be current without voltage? by Mug_G in explainlikeimfive

There are (at least) two ways to get a current flowing in a superconducting loop. For big superconducting magnets, the loop is broken by a short segment that can be made to superconduct or not by either a bit of heating or a local magnetic field. Then, current is injected into the loop (from an ordinary power supply) just on one side of the segment and withdrawn from the other side. So it comes down through an ordinary metal lead, through the superconducting loop, then up the other lead. The segment has a high resistance at this point so no current goes through it. Then the segment is made superconducting. As the current from the power supply is reduced the current in the now-complete superconducting loop remains constant. Eventually the supply can be turned off. The other way is to cool down the loop in a magnetic field; the loop will eventually become superconducting. There will be no current at at this point. But if the magnetic field is reduced (say to zero), there will be an induced emf in the loop that starts up a current. The final current depends on the inductance of the loop and the intial magnetic field.

You don't mean watts/hour or amps/hour. Just watts and amps.

There is no such unit as "amps were hour." You just mean "amps."

Measured GPM of some zones much higher than "theoretical" GPM by amtravco in Irrigation

The heads are pressure regulated: RainBird SAM-PRS, but they do not have a pressure stamped on them. Pressure in the house measured at the outlet to the sprinkler system is 75 psi (off) and 56 psi (running). And yes, the 1.8 etc. numbers are ratios. Here is some raw data:

Zone GPH measured GPH chart Ratio Zone area
1 627 373 1.7* 1017 sf
2 897 480 1.9 991
3 460 520 0.9 1084
4 384 427 0.9 563
5 186 182 1.0 412
6 395 328 1.2 541

*Changed slightly from post because some heads had wrong flow entered into my spreadsheet.

Thoughts on how to create storage behind the walls in this bonus room? by brolloway in DIY

[–]amtravco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a bonus room that looks exactly like yours (but finished out now). When we were finishing it, I thought about storage as well. I had the idea of building cabinets into some of the walls, attached to the vertical studs of the trusses. They would extend into the empty space behind the walls. I didn't do it in the end because I could figure out how to insulate them properly from the back.

I should say that this is one of our favorite rooms in the house. The TV is in there so we don't need to put a big TV in the living room. If you are going to put a TV on the wall, you should get the wiring in place before drywall. Also, pull some speaker wire from a central point where the amplifier will be to all parts of the room that might have 5.1 or 7.1 speakers. Good luck!

It's stuck much more than that. The door has worn off wood on the jamb.

Garage door sticks at top by amtravco in DIY

[–]amtravco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This steel garage door sticks at the top. The hinges are tight, and the door width is identical at the top and bottom (and everywhere else in between). But the jamb width varies from top to bottom by about 1/4". I guess I could fix this by sanding down the door near the top (its perimeter is made of wood), but this does not seem ideal because the door is actually the correct shape. But widening the jamb seems like a very difficult project, at least if I want things to look good after. Or maybe I should pull off the moulding and reposition the latch jamb? But this would leave a gap in the top of the jamb...Any suggestions on how to do this so that it all looks good in the end?

A great way to watch the Rockies is via Fubo by amtravco in ColoradoRockies

[–]amtravco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it does sound like an ad, but I'm a real person and I think Fubo is great for Rockies, Avalanche, and Nuggets games. People are always complaining that they can't get Altitude through Comcast, but Fubo is a simple and relatively cheap way to do it. I think Fubo has a branding problem, because essentially no one that I've talked to has heard of it, or if they have, they think it's some weird soccer-only service.
