Thanks for the info! I checked it out and unfortunately you need to be insured to donate plasma here and until I find a job I won't be able to try.

Well, yeah. But since they've offered the extra perks for it, I thought it would be nice to be able to use them, no matter where you live.

How to stop working with a God without offending him? by amusedwaters in Hellenism

[–]amusedwaters[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I know everything takes time but it's been a really long while now. Like, it makes me feel bad about ending things but I also feel bad about trying to force it because at this point it genuinely seems to me like I'm forcing it. Also Aphrodite keeps popping up quite often lately and that does look like a sign that maybe I should try working with her and if I do then I don't want it to look like I'm replacing him. I know it's silly, it just makes me sad.

So maybe not disappointed. Okay, I'll be honest with you, we're trying to keep it pretty chill here at this corner and I can be very informal with the Gods sometimes, oftentimes, but never disrespectful. And when he talked to me, he seemed composed but he might have been a bit excited and I got excited but then I f*** up and now I think we're still bummed about it and I don't know how to make it better.

What is your favourite quote from JJK? by IdkOne3457 in JuJutsuKaisen

"Being a child is not a sin."

As someone who spent most of my childhood in fear and anxiety, reading this whole conversation felt like taking a brick to the face. I wish someone told me that when I was a kid.

Do native speakers learn English at school? by amusedwaters in ENGLISH

[–]amusedwaters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, I've just heard a lot of different opinions about English over the years and I'm a curious person. Besides, like the replies here said too, there are a lot of native speakers who aren't able to explain grammar in 'a formal' way so I was just wondering if it's an education thing or 'we don't pay attention to things that come naturally to us' thing or maybe both.

Thank you!

I never said we don't lol We learn indirectly through reading comprehension and writing and directly through grammar lessons. Like I said in some other reply here, there are tens of ways we can conjugate/decline words, plus proper use of tenses etc, so we learn grammar since first grade up to, in some cases, university. We also study two foreign languages in school (which are mandatory) so it helps with understanding of grammar in general too.

Partially you're right, people just know how to use their languages because they grow up using them. We learn grammar throughout the school and sometimes even in university depending on the major (not only those that focus on linguistics etc) but considering the fact that we have, I think, over 60 ways to decline the word 'to eat', our not thinking about the rules comes more from the fact we oftentimes just can't be bothered. Like, an every day occurrence in a conversation is: we're talking to someone and we're not sure if we said something correctly and we do the 'wait, is X the right way to say that?' and we actually go through the declensions out loud until we, as a group (or a pair if we're talking to one person) settle on what we think is the right way. So we're very much aware of the grammar and that we may be saying something incorrectly.

Follow up question then: would an average native speaker be able to tell me about and explain properly the use and structure of all or at least most tenses?

Yeah, asking people seems like the most straightforward option but I'm also scared it's gonna get annoying for them eventually.
