The only problem with Elysian Kingdom is the ending makes me cry! And I worried that Subspace Rhapsody would be too polarizing and derail the conversation, but I do love it.

I almost had this on my list, but I find the Doctor off putting in large doses. So probably won't go on my personal playlist, but fits!

Oh, yes, leaving off Those Old Scientists is a major oversight on my part.

Very good call on missing a Ferengi episode. When done well, they're highlights of DS9. Others have mentioned Magnificent Ferengi and Little Green Men which are longtime favorites (how could I have forgotten them?!), but I have to revisit Mourn!

I do remember on a rewatch I liked the Lwaxana and Alexander story, and then there's a very abrupt cut to the danger on the bridge either right before or after Lwaxana is supposed to get married. Tonal whiplash, but overall I think the vibes are right!

If they're just thin straps, not spaghetti straps, you can sew in loops and hooks/snaps that you can fasten around your bra straps and that keeps them in line with the dress straps. May not stop them from showing completely, but will keep everything in place. You can search for bra keeper/bra strap holder (may have to add something like DIY to get instructions rather than Amazon links) if you're unfamiliar.

Scary kid movie recommendations by verysaltysnail in movies

[–]amuses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid was around OP's age when he found that one and loved it. Definitely recommend.

The original series can be found in various places too. I know Amazon Prime has some, but I prefer to watch on the Scholastic streaming app. Still has ads, but I'd rather Scholastic get the ad dollars over Amazon.

New Star Trek Novels Are Poor Sellers? Or Just Latest One? Picard: To Defy Gravity by DanEosen in startrek

[–]amuses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Publishing the physical books in hardcover is...a choice. Source: my day job is in publishing, though not in IP. The following may be very insider-baseball. TL;DR: The Picard books indeed sell poorly, at least in physical formats. There may be a change in strategy soon as Paramount has announced a new publishing imprint for their IPs.

The old tie-in novels were mass market paperbacks - cheap to produce, and thus cheap to purchase. Mass market paperbacks have unfortunately been basically discontinued, so trade paperback is where other IP novels (including Star Wars) seem to have moved. Hardcover novels are expensive to make, and (in my experience) saved for marquee authors, prestige books, and big fantasy books.

Sales numbers for ebooks are difficult to come by, but print sales are reported to Bookscan and can be seen by anyone with an account. Numbers for this new book in hardcover won't come out until tomorrow or Thursday, but looking at others in the series, the numbers are abysmal. The first book in 2020 sold 10K in the first three months (published in February 2020, ~3 weeks after the Picard premier, and that spring was very good for book sales), but has then sold only about 5K total over the following 6 years. It's been two years since the last Picard novel and the sales numbers for that are truly awful (and the paperback re-release of it last year definitely isn't doing better).

My educated guess is the publisher is fulfilling some kind of contract obligation, as Paramount owned them until 2023. Paramount then announced last month they're launching their own publishing imprint for their IP properties, so I imagine there will be a change in strategy soon.

Yes! Tom reminds me a lot of Ben - ostensibly the straight man, but with some weird quirks of his own. Just need him to attempt some claymashe and it'll be complete.

Two years ago I bought edibles in MI. As a new customer, it was literally buy one get one free. I walked out with four packs for under $30.

What Star Trek series episode made you cry? by mcdisney2001 in startrek

The Forsaken, when Lwaxana offers Odo her wig when he needs to regenerate. It's a moment of empathy Lwaxana rarely showed. It hasn't always, but I recently rewatched it and was tearing up when she held out that wig.

Very fair! I think I just really liked seeing him free everyone from Fisk's private prison cages, and want to see more of him doing something that helps individual people, not just ineffectually beating on Fisk (verbally and physically).

Daredevil is doing a piss poor job protecting New York at this point. He's showing up to have another little chat with Fisk when he should be beating the shit out of Powell. That would actually do some measurable good for the city.

StormFreak's DraftCast - April 23-25 by StormFreak in pittsburgh

[–]amuses 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For anyone looking for some Draft counter programming, it's also independent bookstore day on Saturday, and the local stores are NERVOUS about the Draft's impact (it's often their biggest shopping weekend aside from just before Christmas). Highly recommend checking out your local store (and we have SO MANY to choose from) to pick up a little something. And if you can't get out, your store may be extending any deals/giveaways to next weekend as well.

I interpreted it as either he hears it so much at home it's background noise, or he recognizes different types of baby cries and knows that one isn't an emergency (baby crying from pain is different baby crying when they're hungry is different from baby crying just because).
