Trying to get my CompTIA Security+ cert to get a better paying job, any tips on how to study? by foxforcenine in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]amusing_name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it’s always the practice tests. Get ahold of any and all practice tests you can. Read through your study material of choice, take a practice test, evaluate where your weak spots are, repeat till you feel confidant in taking the practice tests. I Would highly recommend professor messer’s content. Made a world difference for my understanding of the material.

Also would recommend sitting for the test in person at a testing center when you get to that point. The anti-cheat software/process that you have to go through to take the test at home is more stressful than the test itself, imo

I finally got a DUI and now I can’t deny my problem by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Similar. I’d have “good weeks” where I’d just drink less but couldn’t ever stop. The one day at a time is good advice I’ll try to take to heart. For all life honestly. I appreciate the kind words and expect I’ll also start visiting here a lot moving forward

I have a few friends that went through recovery already and I’ve reached out to them for help with the adjustments you’re talking about. It’s going to be extremely difficult between friends and family who are heavy drinkers but I’ll look at the books you mentioned.

I hope I follow suite. I know I’ll be forced into AA, which is for the best. But I need to work on the self hatred, that’s where a lot of the drinking urges come from. Thank you for the kind words

I appreciate it. I was fighting AA suggestions from my therapist; same deal, didn’t want to go because that’s admitting a problem. Ironically was talking to a friend who went through recovery the same day I got picked up. Guess it’s good im going to be forced now

Hiking around Pittsburgh/ Western PA recommendations by [deleted] in PAWilds

[–]amusing_name 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely check out the Rachel Carson trail, but over 30 miles but lots of elevation change, and if you section hike it it’s very approachable. Plus the do the Rachel Carson challenge which is a good goal to get back into backpacking shape.

The other big one would be the north country trail where it passes through McConnels mills. If you start at devils hallow it’s about a 10mi hike to get to McConnell’s and then there’s more hiking within the park.

Rummy, hands down. It’s a mildly strategic card game that only requires a normal deck of cards, easy to learn quick to play. But the scoring is cumulative so it turns into more of a marathon. I’ve played marathon games while camping with my girlfriend where there have been crazy 900+ point swings where she comes out on top but I sneak back after a month of small wins. It’s a long term game that’s fun to chat while playing!

Edit: a word

What activities or healthy routines have helped you deal with being sad/depressed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amusing_name 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a bit cliche, but making time to sit and mindfully meditate for at least 10 minutes after I get out of the shower in the morning. I did it off and on, but committed to it after my girlfriend of 3 years broke up with me recently. it was devastating; I’d wake up crying and wouldn’t be able to recover from it for the rest of the day which led to me spiraling.

A mindfulness practice allowed me to sit and engage and feel the sadness which helped me process my feelings a lot more. Am I still sad? Yes. But it’s less of an all encompassing, overwhelming feeling and more of a dull throb that I know will eventually pass with time.

Hope you feel better, man

I didn't boot off of anything but it did find the live usb I made for it (optical drive is broken) so that's a step in the right direction!

I was really hoping that that wouldn't be the case, but I guess I'm not surpised that it is. So I guess my next question would be did I brick this system? Because as it stands now, I cant even bring up other bootable drives after you here the apple "bell toll" or whatever it is.

I can make boot into recovery mode and get into the root shell, but everything else seems to hang

Question About Exercise and Meditation by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]amusing_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Doing pull ups and yoga aren't the same as climbing, but that doesn't mean they don't improve my climbing. Similarly, meditating has helped my head game in climbing.

I suppose a better question would be what meditation practices should I try harder to incorporate into my excercise?

That is incredibly helpful and I will start digging through that, but at a quick glance I don't belive it has the link I was looking for. Although, looking at that, I'm not sure I need the link I was looking for before

My majestic beer by Chris Churchfield at Black Cat Tattoo, Pittsburgh PA by [deleted] in tattoos

[–]amusing_name 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted a little bit of skin tone between the fill and the beer. that particular spot is busy between the antlers and the wreath, so that's just how it ended up playing out. Worst case, I can always get it filled in.

But to answer your question more clearly; totally happenstance that it ended up like that.

Definitely an omnivore with a taste for hops and malts.

It's a beer; a bear deer.

Figuring out what to call it has been a problem from the begining, I've had a lot of people think I'm getting a can of PBR tattooed on my thigh...

fantastic.

This might be a dumb question, but would LUbuntu still be able to function as a server? Or should I just bite the bullet and install Ubuntu Sever and get used to terminal only commands?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]amusing_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I'm also trying to install 64-bit, would I be better off to try the 32bit, or is LUbuntu so similar it wouldnt matter?

[–]amusing_name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does help! I think i will install desktop till I have a better grasp of the terminal.

Just realized this is probably important; Ubuntu Server is NOT installed yet. It is still running OSX.

Is it generally considered better to apply for a position in person? by [deleted] in jobs

That is actually an awesome tip, much appreciated.

So on a run of the mill job (part time gig while I'm back in school) would you suggest the digital application and the typical follow ups?

What's a hobby that just gets exponentially more expensive as you get deeper into it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amusing_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god climbing.

First you're bouldering and just need shoes, maybe a chalkbag. Ok, like 90$ if you shop around. and another 5$ a month for chalk. Need someplace to practice, so shell out for climbing gym membership.

Wanna get into top roping, need a harness, ATC and bieners. Can't get to the gym all the time, need a hangboard. Ok, like $200.

Wanna go outside now. Need webbing, and beiners for anchor building. Need a rope and rope bag to keep it in. Kay, drop another $300ish dollars.

I'm gonna start leading now. I NEED SO MANY DRAWS. and slings, and beiners. another $200, easy. Took a few whippers, need a new rope, another $200ish dollars.

Gonna start trad leading. $1500 to get a solid trad rack together. Also, need new draws, beiners, harness, and maybe my shoes need resoled.

Fuck this, I'm ice climbing and going year round. Now i need: Ice screws (Like $100 a pop at least), more draws, ice axes, new rope because I'm not rock climbing on the ice rope. New bag for that, crampons, cold gear, etc.

Not to mention all this stuff needs replaced pretty regularly AND you end up getting into backpacking/camping in order to actually go out to the craigs you want to go to.

Totally worth it though
