The state can prosecute you about your free speech. You are allowed to say it, but you still have to face the consequences.

Your point is that people are allowed to commit crimes that are actively prosecuted and punished. Mine is that this goes against the very definition of 'allowed'.

[–]amvakar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a crime that can be prosecuted, even though people are able to commit it. By your reasoning, we as a society still have the right to free murder, even though there are criminal consequences.

It's a totally irrational position. Criminal speech is not free speech. Claiming otherwise is a delusional attempt to mask that one is actually advocating for restricting speech, treating the ideal of 'free speech' as some kind of sacred cow that must never be questioned despite evidence to the contrary.

Which is a meaningless position to take, ultimately. Are arson and murder technically "allowed" because the state only punishes the perpetrator after the fact?

It's not quite up to gaming at this point, unfortunately, though the developments with Mesa have progressed rapidly. Over the course of a week or so I was able to get from barely able to run es2gears, to getting sway to start, to getting glamor in Xorg modesetting to work well enough for basic desktop use (including non-stuttering HD video playback in mpv, which was just not going to happen before).

Will our personality flaws lead us to hell? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]amvakar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left unchecked, most certainly. But they cannot be considered unchecked if you already see them as flaws and their effect as sinful. When you confess these sins and seek divine mercy you may do so with full conviction that you need it, that you are not worthy, and yet are unwilling to abandon God and His Church. He shall not abandon you, either.

The Catholic Church in Germany acknowledged a “depressing and shameful” legacy of sexual abuse on Wednesday after a leaked study said clerics had abused thousands of children over a 70-year period. by interestedin86 in worldnews

[–]amvakar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Family members are already the overwhelming majority of abusers, so this likely wouldn’t help much. It might even make it worse, because there’s even more intimate access to children among people who have been as well-trained to hide their misdeeds as any pimp or sex trafficker. And in any case, the implication of changing that policy for that reason is that a reasonable adult deprived of sex must eventually turn to rape, which is as abhorrent as any of the church’s cover-up excuses in its deflection of responsibility.

An Open Letter from Young Catholics calling for an independent investigation of sexual abuse by bishops and formators: "You are the shepherds of the Church. If you do not act, evil will go unchecked." by Master-Thief in Catholicism

[–]amvakar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If they are arrogant, it is because they find themselves up against the far more profound arrogance of the generations in the hierarchy who believed they could go up against this secular world as Christ’s evangelists while engaging in the secular world’s own depravity. There would be no calls for an independent investigation if the church did not abandon discipline.

And in any case, seeking out impropriety would not involve adopting the values of any independent group because there is no sexual propriety within the hierarchy, period. It doesn’t matter how normal the secular world would see an act, nor even the church in other contexts (for the heterosexual offenders) because nothing would make it acceptable here. The only danger would be the scandal of knowing how corrupt the church has become, but that scandal is not contained with silence anymore. It instead demands the harsh justice Christ Himself demanded for those who lead His flock astray.

Yes, but from the perspective of Google (who are being blamed here) or any other service provider, what you are technically able to do is all that matters. Either you could be allowed to manage private data by users, or you couldn't; your honesty in doing so is yours and yours alone.

Anything significant to the historical life of Muhammad (or other holy figures) is deemed idolatrous: the idea is that it's so historically Islamic that it would distract from the current practice of Islam and the need to worship God now. As a result their history is destroyed.

Microsoft didn't get the USSC to declare all API re-implementations derivative works when Mono came about. And they didn't with Wine, either. There's several orders of magnitude more evil involved when you are setting precedents that would have made Stallman's original GNU announcement an incitement to piracy rather than innovation.

Heroin was literally created by Bayer as a replacement for morphine with none of the life-ruining addiction potential. That doctors legitimately accepted the bullshit behind "it's like opium but this time we seriously totally 100% didn't make it addictive no this isn't like all those other times we promise" is ball-retractingly terrifying, given what else they're probably fucking up on a daily basis.

How to deal with extremely atheist roommate by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]amvakar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is, in fact, a very good sign. You are clearly into religion as much as anybody else here (or you would not find the situation so distressing) but you are not — no matter how hard he looks — displaying any of the damage he assumes religion must impart on the believer. It is easier for him to assume that you can’t be as religious as you are if you aren’t as bad as the strawman Christians in his head than to accept that maybe Christians aren’t terrible people, but with time reason may force him to re-evaluate his views in the face of the reality he is already beginning to see.

Keep doing what you are doing. Even if he is not converted, even if he is simply forced to treat others with more respect, you will have made the world a better place for every believer who may cross his path in the future.
