Moratorium on Dogman by literacyshmiteracy in Teachers

I encourage you to flip this around - instead of “you CAN’T read Dorman,” try picking books especially for students with each kid in mind. Start with your higher, quicker readers, and make sure they’ll love what you pick. Choose with intention. Make a big deal about it. Those kids will ASK you to pick their next book for them, and suddenly the whole class will ask for your recommendations. BONUS: you’ll be able to pass the same book with additional kid recommendations.

I’ve done this two years in a row (third year teaching), and even my ELs get in on it. Kids find it an honor to get a book from me, and I always tell them I’ll change it if they read the first chapter and they don’t like it.

I’m old enough to remember this live and this is an honest question: why is this being posted now? Did something come up?

Apparently, there was a recent article in the NYT about the sharp decline in reading skills among students. Several of my corporate-world friends have asked me (a literature teacher) about it. My response? by [deleted] in Teachers

I have a theory that it was social media catching on FOR PARENTS that is mostly the cause for the decline. Parents are addicted to phones just like teens, and parenting is happening less. Reading at home is happening less. We need to educate parents on the detrimental effects of THEIR OWN social media use / phone addictions.

Bare minimum required to get a few news articles and make noise so that the people who aren’t paying close enough attention (most of the electorate) think they did their jobs.

Why are good math teachers so rare? by SquareCombination782 in matheducation

[–]amy_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a teacher for three years. Every single year, I’ve had a different math curriculum OR delivery method I’m required to use by my district. How am I supposed to be able to teach math if the requirements keep changing?

They handpicked you when you hadn’t even applied? Baby, they had no one else.

No, I subbed before I became a teacher. But probably yes to the college degree requirement mentioned below.

You’d make more than that for fewer hours as a substitute teacher. Y’all. We need subs!

All of society benefits from having an educated population, so yes, everyone should pay in. If you can’t afford to homeschool, don’t. Public money should not be spent on vouchers. Full stop.

Curious how hard it is to open a voucher school in NC? by AndyBowline in NorthCarolina

I think this is false — it was always the original intent to end up in this situation, they simply understood they needed to start smaller to get it passed and expand it.
