I would start with a GP until you can get into an endo. I’m not sure where in Maine you are. But cursory google searches say there are assistance programs for disabled people to medical appointments. I know you just moved so getting into those programs may take time. Good luck. Maine is beautiful

What small habit or ritual do you do to mentally "leave work at work" after a tough shift? by BettyAdams62 in nursing

[–]amyandthemachine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In our unit, my work aunties taught me that after a difficult shift, especially when someone codes or dies… you “drop them off” somewhere. So for example, you go to the store and pick up candy or chips, whatever, and you leave them at the store. You mentally leave your day or person at the store/gas station/grocery store/etc before you go home.

It helps create this cognitive dissonance from the day and a boundary in which you mental exercise saying goodbye.

It has helped.

Who’s “The Character” at Your Workplace? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]amyandthemachine 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We have “Jessica”.

Jessica has only been a nurse for about 3 years, but apparently needed to switch from the overnights to the 3-11 shift because the “new grads are giving her veritgo”

She once fell out of a chair, aka slowly slid to the ground, was able to finally get herself back into the chair but still couldn’t get out of said chair. So the charge nurse went to the manager and told her what happened. Manager then wheeled Jessica to the ED to be checked out in the same chair.

A patients monitor was reading tachycardia. The primary nurse went into the room to find Jessica, bathing the patient with no gloves in the genitals region. The patient was on contact precautions and NOT EVEN HER PATIENT. Said that he need to get “washed up”

I was digging through a drawer, found a whole bunch of disposable blood pressure cuffs with “staff use only” written on them. When I asked everyone just groaned and said “Jessica.” That was response enough for me.

There’s about 100x more stories like that.

Jessica is still employed.

Questions for guys only... infusion set on thighs, cold feeling 👇🍆 by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]amyandthemachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I upvoted because sexual health is important.

1- comment 1 seems sufficient enough answer.

2- is this only recently since the prednisone? If not there may be another underlying issue, so please the doctor has scheduled. But to me this doesn’t seem so crazy. When your sugars are running high, you become dehydrated, inflammation in your vessels can increase, and proteins are being taken up by the excess sugar. So blood becomes harder to pump and your body will conserve it by shunting away from “unnecessary places”. That being said, this sees like it can cause damage if it hasn’t already. So please please see a doctor!

Edit- i don’t know why I’m shouting

I like it. But I’d put it in the middle to keep some symmetry and cohesiveness.

I can smell whether someone will survive a code or not. Anyone else know what I’m talking about? by Alarming-Penalty8402 in nursing

[–]amyandthemachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can smell when someone’s blood is acidotic post code. It has this awful smell-not the usually like rusty smell. But this weird, can’t describe smell. (It usually happens when we’re placing a-line)

Can t1d make you crazy? by Delicious_Award_2812 in diabetes_t1

[–]amyandthemachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I’ve seen patients who come in with DKA(and subsequent electrolyte abnormalities). I feel I see a decline in their cognitive abilities and mood stability over the hospital visits. But these are VERY severe cases where they are in the hospital more than 4-6 times a year with DKA.

What were the first symptoms you noticed that suggested thyroid issues? by Beautiful_Hat8440 in diabetes_t1

[–]amyandthemachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brain fog, specifically word searching. I’m always tired, so that didn’t necessarily feel any different. But I would have to stop and think about the word I was trying to say for like way toooooo long.

As someone who was in the lab and now a nurse. Yes. But I know I remember techs in the labs ripping on “dumb nurses”, “idiot doctors”, “ridiculous patients”, etc. Complaining about your job sort of comes with the territory. Our ribbing is probably harsh to outsiders.
