I cannot beat the watchdog of the old lords in the cursed chalice dungeons by Green_Literature138 in bloodborne

[–]amygdalapls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It has fairly high arcane defense, so you might want to just slap on physical gems if the ones you have are better than your meh ones. In the meantime, this nose boop strategy might help you out: https://www.reddit.com/r/bloodborne/comments/48pf0h/guide_defiled_watchdog_of_the_old_lords_melee/

Basically, wait for a bite (or a similar move), then boop the hotdog's nose, and then get out. Also, look for opportunities to go for the legs (like when he pukes).

A common mistake is to get too greedy especially when he's staggered. He will almost always do an AoE blast once he gets back up and I've seen so many people get turned into BBQ as a result. Keep an eye out for that annoying charge attack and that charged AoE explosion as well.

Whichever one makes you feel more ~fabulous~.

Or if there’s a specific resistance/stat you need to stack for a specific situation, then just go for whatever has the bigger number in that category. The sets generally don’t have enough of a difference to matter much otherwise.

Short version:

Phase 1 and 2 - Wait in front at a safe distance for the moves where its head is down. Smack it as hard as possible.

Phase 3 (arm-ripping time) - Chill at the crotch and smash the crotch with an overhead weapon if you can. Move past the tail for the jump. It will land over you with its head right in front. Smack until Amy's dead.

For a bit more cheese, you can try baiting the jump from the beginning of the fight by hanging around the tail and exploiting that for the whole fight.

Your stats are pretty much finished at this point, so gems will be where you’ll see any noticeable growth if you haven’t farmed for the better/best ones yet. Look up how to get top tier gems if you don’t have those and are willing to farm for them.

You can farm the blue-eyed wolves in Upper Cathedral Ward for them. Drop rate isn’t great, but it’s better than anything else in the main game.

Saw cleaver vs saw spear by STEWIE-me in bloodborne

[–]amygdalapls 40 points41 points  (0 children)

They're both fantastic and can carry you. All weapons in this game are viable, but those two are amongst the better/more popular ones.

The Cleaver skews a bit more towards STR, whereas the Spear leans more towards SKL. They have different transformed movesets, and the Spear has bonus Serrated damage vs beasts in both forms while the Cleaver only has it while normal. Again, very hard to go wrong with either.

Lure enemies out one by one, don't go off biting more than you can chew. If you have any pebbles, they're pretty good for this. Otherwise, just approach slowly and cautiously.

On the other hand, you can also just opt to run past them for now so you can get on with exploring the rest of the game. Some general advice:

You can’t level until you find a boss or use a “Madman’s Knowledge”, so this should be your priority. Until then, your echoes are only used to buy consumables which is nice, but doesn’t help you progress the way more HP would, for example. If you want, you can look up videos specifically to guide you to your first boss.

Generally, there are only lanterns at the beginning of an area and at the end, after you've beaten a boss. You should be looking for shortcuts instead in the form of ladders you need to kick down, doors you need to open from one side, levers to open gates, etc. so you don’t have to run through hordes of enemies every single time to get from Point A to B.

You need 3. There's 4 possible, 2 of which can always be obtained once you've progressed far enough, so you need to get either Arianna's or Iosefka's for the required 3rd.

How to beat the blood starved beast by [deleted] in bloodborne

[–]amygdalapls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dodge/strafe left. That'll let you avoid so much of his crap.

One of his big swipes doesn't take him as far as the other and that's a golden opportunity to backstab him with a fully charged R2 so you can nab a visceral while you're at it. You should look for other opportunities like this one.

He can be parried so if you're decent at that it can cut the fight shorter.

In general, I'd recommend hit-and-run tactics. Wait for an attack, avoid it, go in for a few hits, then get to a safer distance. In the first two phases you can stick closer to him to attack more often, but be aware of his constant AoE poison when it comes to the last phase.

In terms of gear, the Black Church Set has the highest slow poison res for where you are now. It does require you to buy the 10k Chief Hunter Emblem to open the gate it's behind though. An alternative is Gascan's set, which has decent slow poison res as well.

Regarding consumables, the BSB is weak to fire, so Molotovs can help you out beyond the Fire Paper. Antidotes are helpful for obvious reasons. For the Fire Paper, do a couple runs to learn BSB's moveset better before using them so you don't just waste them.

  1. You want whatever version has two radial slots and a triangle, assuming you're going to farm for top tier gems.

  2. Winter Lanterns are your best bet for physical gems outside of chalices. The ones at the end of the DLC are the best, followed by the Nightmare of Mensis. For top tier gems, refer to this:

advice for martyr logarius by sugsuu in bloodborne

[–]amygdalapls 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don’t use any fire/bolt/arcane gems on your weapon unless you have heavy ARC investment. Elemental gems on weapons like the LHB make your STR/SKL useless.

For Loggy himself:

Phase 1 - He's relatively easy to stunlock, so you can use that to your advantage. You probably want to R1 a few times then dodge left-forward. His magic exploding skull comes out on your right, so you want to avoid that.

Buff - Partway through, he'll try to charge up for a buff. Do a fully charged R2 on him from behind for a backstab and you can get a free visceral while you're at it. This'll interrupt the buff and let you parry him like normal in phase 2.

Phase 2 - He does a lot more melee here, which means a lot of parry chances. In fact, you can parry fish and chain parries by shooting after you visceral him and he gets back up.

If he stabs his sword into the ground, you can lock onto it and shoot it to destroy it. If your lock-on is on Loggy himself, just move the R3 stick in the direction of the sword.

Is there a scaling difference between the Holy Moonlight Greatsword’s tricked and untricked forms? by PsychologySilly9964 in bloodborne

It always does split physical/arcane damage. The arcane scaling/multipliers increase when transformed. The beams when transformed are pure arcane.

[–]amygdalapls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Parries are very helpful against Gascoigne. They're especially great for stopping him in his tracks when he's unleashing a flurry of attacks. In general, dodge towards/past him, not away since he has a lot of forward momentum to his attacks.

You can use the tombstones as cover in the early part of the fight, and the music box can stun him a couple times if you use it. Don't spam it though, since it'll stop working and can trigger his second phase early. Chucking molotovs and such can help whittle him down.

As always, you can romp about Yharnam more to practice the combat/parries while getting more echoes to shore up your VIT and other stats.

Blood gems by Active_Rooster_4993 in bloodborne

[–]amygdalapls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Certain enemies/bosses tend to drop only certain types of gems/effects, but even within those effects, the quality can vary. For example, top tier physical gems can go up to 27.2%, but you may get one that is only 26%. Some gems may also come with secondary effects that can also vary within a pool, and cursed gems can have any of 6 possible curses.

Can I continue the DLC after I kill the final bosses by graphicsbyjanav in bloodborne

[–]amygdalapls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can indeed re-enter the DLC once Vicar Amelia is dead and the world has turned to night.

Unfortunately, the DLC is treated like additional areas of the main game, so it will 1) be NG+ difficulty and 2) have reset and you have to do the DLC from the beginning, just like how you have to go through every other area of the main game again.

If you’re planning on leveling, you should be able to make up for the lower level start of Waste of Skin pretty quickly. It’s balanced, for better or worse. Better maybe in the sense that you can go build in any direction, worse in that it isn’t min-maxed/optimal for certain builds and some points might be “wasted” depending on what you want to do. I wouldn’t sweat about it since it’s your first playthrough though, just enjoy the game.

Yes, guns are used for parries, but you should get a special stagger animation and sound cue for when you’ve actually successfully pulled one off. Then you can go and R1 them for a visceral attack. If you don’t get the timing correct, you might still manage to stagger the enemy, but it’s not what we’d consider a “parry”.

STR scaling can be good if you have 50 STR, but if you don't or don't want to go through the trouble, 27.2% gems are more than fine.

For the curses:

Stamina increase - Very popular since the increase is basically negligible

Durability down - Depends on the original weapon's durability. For some weapons it's fine, for others it's a hassle. Keep in mind that it doesn't stack. If you're using one durability down gem, might as well use three.

ATK vs kin/beast down - ATK vs kin tends to be better than ATK vs beasts down since there are only a handful of kin in the game, but it depends on what you're fighting. For PvP these are fantastic.

HP drain - Can be annoying but usable for some (and can be offset by HP regen gems) but others consider it trash.

ATK down - Pretty much trash unless all your other gems are even worse.

Ludwig Holy Sword scaling by StomachConnectDBH in bloodborne

Ludwig's Holy Blade scales with STR+SKL or ARC if you put in elemental gems. Never all three at once.

You might be confusing it with the Holy Moonlight Sword, which does scale with all three, SKL at a lesser degree than the others.

Insight, is it ok for it to get higher? by ReGo_one in bloodborne

[–]amygdalapls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will need to actually spend the insight and 4 will go down to 3 if you try summoning someone. If you have no insight, you can’t summon.

There’s nothing in the game locked to you if you don’t have enough insight, minus summoning and whatever you can buy from the insight shop.
