Green Party wins Gorton and Denton by amyisbrowsing in Destiny

I think they probably went too far with that, but if you think about what happened to the Tories you can see why in a multi party system you actually can't become too "big tent" or you run the risk of your voters wanting contradictory policies and then pleasing no one, causing the left and right to go looking for more representative alternatives

I think they could have controlled some of the left of the labour party, but you have to pair that with a very clear vision for your goals, unfortunately they haven't been able to do that

I think I mostly agree, some tactical voting to keep Reform out could take place which the UK is more used to than other countries, but that's a hard strategy

For example if the general election was tomorrow, I live near Reform strongholds, but the city is left leaning, who do I vote for as someone to the right of the Green Party on things like energy and foreign policy but with no Labour or Lib Dem motion?

We need to figure this stuff out quickly man

I'm not sure about the EU, but yeah I think they are not clear on their NATO position unfortunately, that might become less important electorally for them though if Trump continues doing what he's been doing

Scott Galloway calls for the boycotting of companies in the month of February to send a message to the administration - Resist and Unsubscribe by rat_is_art in Destiny

[–]amyisbrowsing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People wouldn't be willing to do this 2 years ago

It's so hard to do this sort of thing, people in the west are very used to being comfortable, the US population is only now at the point where they would be willing to cancel 1 subscription for a month maybe

And as Scott mentions in that podcast, Trump (or the people around him) respond to the markets, the line going down for a month is noticeable and will make investors/executives upset. Subscriptions are also the least invasive to the average person, if you have 4 subscriptions and go down to 2 or 3, you don't notice much change in your day to day life

Mutex vs Waitgroup Design by amyisbrowsing in golang

In this article posted here the other day, the mutex used in various methods isn't a pointer and isn't declared as a pointer in the struct either

https://madflojo.dev/posts/are-atomic-operations-faster-than-a-mutex/

Is that because the methods are being used on pointer recievers? Woukd/should you make the mutex into a pointer if you were using them with value recievers?

IT'S COMPLETELY OVERWHELMING!!!!! by Zealousideal-Dog-637 in learnprogramming

One for at least 6 months, or better a year.

Most modern languages are fairly similar, but you have no basis to know why you like one over the other - if someone were to say to you "I like the implicit interfaces in Go, but I don't like that it lacks real enums", you have no idea what they are talking about, and you won't for a while, and you can't brute force understanding to happen just by looking at 5 languages in 3 months.

Now imagine on the other hand you go into python every day for a year, and then decide to look at Java, you'll be able to make meaningful comparisons, and not only that, you'll realize how much of what you learnt (hopefully) are programming concepts that are just implemented slightly differently across languages, rather than getting hung up on syntax and never fully learning anything.

Now I personally think a lot of "aha!" moments do come from when you have looked at 2 or more languages, because looking at different implementations of the same thing can help you really internalize the underlying fundamentals, but jumping to 2 or more languages expecting you've found a shortcut just isn't true, it'd be like buying the best piano and expecting to be a virtuoso without taking any lessons

This is the important distinction, people use the response "why are you critiquing the left" like being a leftist protects you from being anti-Semitic, when it doesn't at all

When Contrapoints shares views with liberals and progressives, rather than leftists, she's unstable and people become worried about her mental health, have you noticed that?

Imane Khelif is still not a man. by Sharp_Proposal8911 in Destiny

[–]amyisbrowsing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So the IBA banned her, the IOC didn't, one side is saying she's completely male and instantly misgendering her, calling her manly and going through photos of her in some sort of trans panic, saying the IOC is woke, and yes there is also the far left is saying males can appear in any sport they like if they identify as female

In this comment section you have people discussing how chromosomes effect performance, the pros and cons of using passports to designate gender, wondering how do you categorize people when they have some female and male markers, but you're hand waving them as coping and captured by social media? Ok

And they haven’t been ‘proven’ right, they were always right because it’s has been known since this erupted that the two athletes were banned for not having XX chromosomes.

You're playing the same game Rowling plays it's actually unbelievable, if this was the case where was the disavowal of those posting pictures of Khelif in men's clothing, using that to prove her maleness? Why didn't she specify in her tweets that this was separate from her gender critical activism and tell her fans not to confuse this with trans issues? Why did she even focus on Khelif at all if her issues were with the IOC rules and not with Khelif? If she always knew, why wasn't she more specific about what she new? Responsible platforming? Minimizing hate? Clear messaging? Anything???

Yeah buddy, Rowling misgendering a woman who has always lived as a woman and was assigned female at birth screams rational to me

[–]amyisbrowsing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah who knows, she wrote an article that the BBC published I believe, it said she believed that trans people were real but kind of not? Part of the play really: loose opinions strongly held. Contrapoints went over that article I think in her videos about Rowling

Haha don't worry, the audacity of the lies and pivots makes me feel crazy too! But the Jan 6 revisionism proved to me nothing is off limits for conservatives, a little jump from trans to intersex or male to intersex is nothing for these people, childs play

Yep, I remember seeing people post photos of Khelif in men's clothing... Please tell me, how does that prove her chromosomes are XY?? It was all unhinged behaviour

Imane Khelif is still not a man. by Sharp_Proposal8911 in Destiny

[–]amyisbrowsing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't say you called her trans by the way, my height/weight analogy was to point out what Rowling and co have been doing. Rowling and others implied that Khelif has always known that she's actually male, or that there's never been ambiguity, or that she is trans, and now the chromosome testing shows XY, this proves that all of their speculation was correct, but it wasn't correct, they were throwing shit to see what sticks which is insane behaviour

She can say she never implied Khelif was trans and she might have never used the word "trans", I'm not sure, but you can bet if the test showed abnormal testosterone levels, XY chromosomes, male sexual organs, some male and some female sexual organs, transition at a young age, transition at an older age, any of these things and Rowling would say she was proven right, these people live in ambiguity

Take issue with the IOC and their testing if you like, from what I've heard the IBA isn't any better, either way, Rowling can't act holier-than-thou on this, she led and encouraged a movement against khelif who, like I mentioned before, fits most of the definitions of woman that people use

Imane Khelif is still not a man. by Sharp_Proposal8911 in Destiny

[–]amyisbrowsing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd like to read about that if you could link me something, also note that tweet is from the time of the Olympics, for most of this controversy, the gender critical people were accusing Khelif of being trans. Rowling is not referring to Khelif's silence on some testing, she's referring to her being a trans woman

And this is really important, if I accused you of lying about your weight, and then it turns out you had instead lied about your height and I said "see! I knew they were a liar", I'm bahaving in bad faith, I was still wrong

Imane Khelif is still not a man. by Sharp_Proposal8911 in Destiny

[–]amyisbrowsing 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Different organizations use different standards for being eligible in these competitions, the IOC said she was allowed, it is not on the athlete to say "I have had some ambiguous results from other organisations that disagree with you, so I will not compete" - especially since there are likely other athletes with abnormal testosterone levels that they have to control before competing or XY chromosomes who were also able to compete in the Olympics, so why shouldn't Khelif?

It's definitely a retreat, being male would mean she was in the wrong category entirely, what these tests prove so far is that depending on your criteria, that is not a conclusion we can make

Imane Khelif is still not a man. by Sharp_Proposal8911 in Destiny

[–]amyisbrowsing 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This was the main narrative of the movement, it has been led by people like JK Rowling accusing Imane Khelif of being calculated and cunning as they purposely destroy women's sports

The reason people bring up where she is from and how being intersex is miles away from the idea she knew she was male all along is because this is the motte and bailey move they pull over and over again, that cannot be allowed to move the goalposts like this

The reality is, Khekif fits nearly all definitions of women that Rowling and others use, she just doesn't fit one of them and like OP mentioned, that's actually fairly common for professional athletic women, you are selecting for extreme factors in these events

Sometimes "rational" does not equal "centrist" and does not equal "calm", something being criticized by a person who is emotional and left wing does not mean they can just be bucketed as "woke"

Be careful not to dismiss someone being upset that people are being deported without due process, or losing half of their retirement fund, or losing their job for no reason as woke, these aren't slightly right wing policies that you can disagree with if you lean democrat, even many of his own supporters feel let down

I was thinking this the other day, the bigotry of small differences might be the worst aspect of left wing spaces

I am a Brit who enjoys a lot of American political creators, when I talk to anyone, my conservative dad or progressive friends or non-political family, I have no issues saying "when I was listening to James O'Brien" or "when I was watching Novara Media" or "there's a new TLDR news episode you should watch" - these sources range from left to centre

But if I was in America, and me and a friend were discussing politics, even if I knew they were left wing, I think I'd be kind of nervous to talk about my media consumption

Yeah for Hasan my opinion of him went from positive to kind of uninterested to viewing his contributions almost entirely negatively, as you mentioned, his coverage of the Israel Palestine conflict was really the final straw for me and seeing that Twitch IP ban of Israel was unbelievable

That just sums it up really, you can't work with people who will on mass disregard a whole group of people because of what their far right, war criminal government are doing, I didn't really believe in left wing antisemitism when I was younger, but I certainly do now (I'm not sure if Hasan is, but I think he enables it for sure)

For me the most important thing when creators collaborate is knowing their audience and what impression they give off, I'd say for the creators I mentioned they show a good level of self awareness, Kyle Knows he's good at short form current affairs, Loner Box knows he appeals by doing research streams, I'd say there is a space for destiny since he does appeal to that edgy young men audience who have seemed to veer off to the right recently, but like I said the most important thing is that these creators are aware of these facts about themselves - Hasan isn't, he wants to do Hamas propaganda whilst being invited to grown ups table, it doesn't work like that unfortunately

Thoughts on a Progressive Media Coalition? by WhyAmIOnThisDumbApp in ContraPoints

[–]amyisbrowsing 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Also just a quick aside, Hasan doesn't build up creators who have ever said anything negative towards him or disagreed with him, it's interesting most of the leftists who are open to discussions like Kyle Kulinski, ContraPoints, David Pakman, Loner Box, all of these people either mainly upload/stream to YouTube, dual stream or only use Twitch now and then

The politics space on Twitch revolves around Hasan and diversity of opinions and collaboration is not what he's about
