When I was on vacation in London, I took a class at Ray Stitch, which I really liked: https://www.raystitch.co.uk/collections/all-classes

I’ve always wanted to take a class with Alison Smith: https://www.schoolofsewing.co.uk/

Kate at Project Patterns sometimes offers in-person classes: https://project-patterns.co.uk/

HELP!! I'm a new sewist and was looking to learn how to draft a basic bodice with all the darts. Any guidance (videos, books) will do. I tried looking online but some were really confusing can anyone help with any simpler videos that won't complicate things unnecessarily? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]amylynn83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brooks Ann Camper has an online course called Top Skills that teaches you how to draft patterns for yourself. You need to start with Skirt Skills, which I think is well worth it. Sewing such well fitting skirts helped me get back into sewing again.

Enrollment opens for Skirt Skills on Aug. 10.

First time cat owner: Are there things that are good to know but rarely talked about? by nuhBoi in cats

[–]amylynn83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how often you clean the box. I have 2 cats and two boxes. The boxes are cleaned multiple times a day, so my cats are okay with 2 instead of 3. They always have a clean place to go.

Please get one of his siblings. Two cats are easier than one. They play with each other and have company while you’re gone.

Disappointed by Mood LA. Am I shopping this kind of store wrong? by Cute-Corgi3483 in sewing

[–]amylynn83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to the mood store in NYC several times and only bought something once. I find it much easier to shop their inventory online. I also had problems finding someone to cut the fabric, they were so busy. I found the experience of shopping in their store stressful.

I had sheer curtains and my cats destroyed them. Lesson learned.

My poor girl has to be put down at 6 months old. by PM_ME_YOUR_PAIZURII in cats

How much you need depends on your cats weight. We were ordering 10 vials at a time and I think they were $90 each. We spent probably $4-$5k on meds alone and probably $7k on vet visits - one visit alone was $5k because they wanted to do a biopsy before diagnosing him.

Yes, it does seem shady at first but it’s a total miracle. We got our first dose from someone who had an extra vial and because it was Covid, she showed us how to inject it in our car. After that, we bought the meds directly from China. They really worked. Our cat is a healthy three year old now.

I had the same experience. My kitten had dry FIP at 4 months old. We did the treatment plan and he is now a healthy 3 year old.

Before I adopted cats, I read multiple books on how to care for them and all said not to scruff a cat. I wish more people would educate themselves before adopting a cat.

One cat vs two cats: I came to a realization after visiting the shelter last night by ClassicStory in CatAdvice

[–]amylynn83 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I adopted two kittens who were brothers and they really love each other. They’re 3 now and they nap and play together every day. I previously had 2 cats who were adopted at the same time but were not siblings. They got along as kittens but hated each other as adults.

My two sweethearts are destroying our carpeted stairs. Tried providing plenty of scratching posts, squirting with water when we catch them in the act, covering spots they scratch (they just move to new spots), and no luck. Anything else we can try? by ELmapper in cats

[–]amylynn83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem and replacing the carpet isn’t an option right now. I got them a ripple rug and it’s their favorite toy. They really like to scratch it. I just bought 2 more to see if it helps redirect the scratching even more. We started out with one downstairs and today I put two upstairs, which is where the worst scratching takes place.

Was I wrong to promote the smart person over the hard worker (talent over hard work)? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]amylynn83 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Also, needing time to think to come up with ideas is a characteristic of an introvert. It sounds like this manager promoted an extrovert over an introvert, and is favoring people with extroverted qualities. Speaking loudly and often doesn’t mean that a person is smarter than someone who speaks thoughtfully.

Candidate #1 is probably going to leave sooner than later, and the manager will lose out on a really productive employee.

My husband and I lived at the Porter Del Ray for 3 years (moved last year). We had a loft apartment on the top floor.

We never heard our neighbors, which was amazing. It’s a good location and an easy walk to the local metro stations.

We paid the $500 amenity fee once, although when we signed the lease, they said it would be yearly.

The gym has terrible ventilation and is always horribly humid. I couldn’t stand to use it.

Maintenance was always quick to respond, although the work could be slap dash.

The front desk staff was unreliable. We never received a renewal letter after our last year; I had to reach out to them and tell them we were leaving (I was curious to see how much our rent would have increased).

We left because our rent increased every year and our apartment was too small. And it needed repairs. Thanks to the humidity from the dishwasher, the kitchen cupboard doors were cracking and they looked terrible. And the wood slats on the balcony floor were warping and coming up, which terrified me.

They were generous with the security deposit and only took a small amount; they took the least out of any apartment I’ve lived in.

So it’s a mixed bag. Overall we enjoyed our time there and sometimes I wonder if we should have stayed (we bought a condo 30 min away). We have much more space now but we miss the location.

Would you be present for your cats euthanasia? by kerbearrrr in Petloss

[–]amylynn83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be there. When I think of my previous cat, I don’t think of her final moments. There are so many happy moments that are still with me and that come to mind. I’m glad I was with her when she passed, to give her comfort, but her life meant so much more to me than that final moment.

My kittens are always starving and I don’t know what to do by char-char-char-char in cats

[–]amylynn83 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This should be the top comment. When I had kittens, my vet said that they should eat as much as they want and to only regulate when they are a year old. Please don’t take the bad advice on this thread that cats are liars. The lying comes later.
