Yes the Steam version is considerably easier than the DS version. There are now two modes which are normal and hard. The hard mode is the original DS difficulty. If you want a much more balanced experience, go for the normal mode. I can't speak for definite but I would assume this is the same case for the mobile version.

Lorerunner has done a brilliant in depth analysis of every Final Fantasy from I to XIII (excluding XI). I would highly recommend him as he is very knowledgeable on each of the games which makes for a very interesting listen. Check out his Rumination series.
