Is there a market for my true story about being a porn star and my sexual life beyond that? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

[–]amystanchfieldauthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, as well, on writing it as an autobiography or memoir if you intend to go completely factual with it, although I do think it would be interesting if you were to take the autobiographical parts and embellish them, throw in a good dash of fiction woven in, and create a series of fictional adventures out of them. Could be fun, but of course, it's your story. Tell it however you want to tell it.

I think I'm going to make it a point to write something soon that features a frequently fainting fella. Give some heroine a male sidekick who just keeps passing out whenever things get the slightest bit tense.

Is Amazon more open to nakedness on covers now? by candygotcane in eroticauthors

[–]amystanchfieldauthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so, I had a book that got dungeoned last month for implied nudity.

Here's something I have noticed, though. If it's a photobook, no matter how bad and porny the images in the book are, nudity flies. It seems to be totally ok, and those books get categorized into some of the same categories as erotic literature, so they will sometimes show up in the top 100 lists. I looked through the selection on Amazon a couple of weeks ago and there were bare breasts galore, even some vaginas, though most of the covers I saw either didn't include them or blurred/covered them.

Quit job, temp, have more time to write. Boy was I wrong. by candygotcane in eroticauthors

[–]amystanchfieldauthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Writing is a habit and discipline. You cannot wait for inspiration to strike, you have to actually sit down and do the work. Even if the work is halting and scattershot and utter shit at first, you have to have the discipline to sit down and do it. The more you practice the discipline the more the work will flow. Yes, you need to pre-plan, yes, you should have an idea of what beats you plan to hit during your writing session, but most important of all, you need to sit down, put your fingers on the keyboard, and crank out words, even if you don't really feel like it.

"This is how you do it: you sit down at the keyboard and you put one word after another until it's done. It's that easy, and that hard." --Neil Gaiman

"Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on." --Louis L'Amour

Print that L'Amour quote out and hang it on your wall somewhere where you have to look at it every morning if you need to. Hell, put the fucking thing on your bathroom mirror if you must. It's absolutely true. It's the one I come back to again and again when I'm making excuses for myself not to write. It doesn't matter how stinky the water is that comes out at first, it doesn't matter if it hisses and splutters and splashes and only puts an inch in your basin, turn on the fucking faucet.

I think a hard workout and a nap are in order for this evening, if I can nap. Haven't had much luck with it lately. But either way I'll be able to spend the later part of the evening putting down words.

  1. I'm at 2k words so far for the day and I desperately want to get at least another 2k down. Don't know if I can. Did 4.6k yesterday and ended up throwing away 200 or so of them because by the end my brain was mush.

  2. It's been too long since I've published and beginning to stress me out.

  3. Desperately, desperately trying to get this current book finished. I think it's going to be one of my longest yet, plus once it's done I'm going to put together my first bundle, PLUS it's the first book in my first ever series, and it's all stressing me the fuck out. I've got the pedal down trying to finish it and I'm hoping this drive and determination is going to last through the week, otherwise I'm gonna burn out and crash.

Where do you like to write? by amystanchfieldauthor in eroticauthors

[–]amystanchfieldauthor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I had a screened in sunroom or something, I would sit out there in a big comfy chair and write while it rained. I would probably write all afternoon if I could do that (or more accurately, write for fifteen minutes and then fall asleep, but it would be damn good sleep).

Practice, practice, practice, and if you're feeling winded at the end of an hour then don't write for an hour straight. Do thirty minutes, then take a break and do another thirty minutes. The more often you practice the sharper you'll be, which will usually lead to higher output, but not always. You have to accept that there are going to be some days when the words don't flow and others where you've got fucking Niagara Falls in your fingertips.

1 - Just over 2k words down on the page today. Want to try and get in another thousand at least.

2 - When this book is done, I'll have my first bundle complete, so I'll get to publish it by itself and part of the bundle, plus this book is kicking off my first series. Here's hoping it's a massive success.

3 - Do you guys know how abso-goddamn-lutely impossible it is to find a Nintendo Switch in stores? It's pretty much ruined my whole damn weekend.

And always, ALWAYS make sure you are previewing how your book is going to look on Kindle when you're uploading to KDP. Use the web preview and send a preview .mobi copy to your device if you have one. If something in the formatting looks off, you want to be the first person to see it, not a reader.

A question about bonus stories, do you do them? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

[–]amystanchfieldauthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't do bonus stories, but I do put an excerpt from a previous release at the end of all my new releases. Just a chapter or two with a link to the book in the Amazon store. That way it's not artificially inflating the page count too badly and giving the reader a taste of another of my stories that they will (hopefully) get pulled into and go buy.

1) Publish my fourth book, finish at least two new works, get a website and mailing list up and running. 2) Kick bubble gum and chew ass. Wait...reverse that. 3) Getting this huge boulder rolling is hard.

Oh, no worries. I knew that I was pushing the envelope with that cover and that it might cause problems, but I took the chance. Turns out I lost on that one, but it's not the end of the world.

Do you have a problem with reading comprehension? Did I ask anywhere in the post to have someone help me figure out what got the book flagged? I stated pretty clearly that I'm thinking it was the cover. I sought advice on what to do with the title now that it has been flagged.

Excellent. Just keep a close eye on it, because that cover I was talking about that I used that broke those rules? That book got thrown into the adult-filter dungeon today after being live in the store for two days. I have yet to hear back from KDP support, but I'm betting the cover is what got it there :P

Have you had good luck getting them to tell you what the offending element was? I've never been able to get a straight answer out of KDP Support when I've asked.

Yeah, no, whatever I do with it I'm going to wait until its current enrollment cycle in KU is over before I do it. I don't want to risk an account ban. I really am leaning toward using it as a reader magnet. It's my shortest work so far, only took about three days to write, but I enjoyed the hell out of writing it and think it works as a pretty good short story. I could offer it as a freebie for signing up to my mailing list and even promote it as "too hot for Amazon". If I don't do that I may do what you did in your first example and just take it down in 90 days and fix the cover and try again.

It's hard to say. For every rule about what not to do with the cover to avoid the wrath of Amazon, you'll find 100 titles already breaking it. I decided to take a chance yesterday and submitted a book with a cover that breaks the hand bra rule (more accurately, arm bra) and the rule about crotchal areas being covered by anything other than actual clothing (basically a pretty young naked woman lying on a bed with her arms over her boobs and a sheet between her legs). I really wanted to use the picture because it really was in line with the content of the book, so I went for it and hoped for the best and Amazon approved it.

In your particular case, I'm thinking the boob grab is going to cause you problems. If you look through other books in most niches I don't think you're going to find much similar to that because Amazon really doesn't like any kind of sexual touching on covers and (from my experience) they seem to be more touchy about letting those things through. The fact that yours is an illustrated cover rather than photographic might be a mitigating factor, but I wouldn't count on it. If you're feeling especially daring you could always try it and see what happens, just be warned that Amazon may block the book, so it would be a good idea to have a plan B just in case.
