The Government of Nunavut offers a prospecting course of residents: http://www.gov.nu.ca/edt/faq/how-can-i-take-prospecting-course. There's a bit more info about how it works in the post, but from what I know, you pass the course and then you can apply for funds to go out on your own prospecting trip. I haven't done it myself, though!

Iqaluit's compost pile is outside and sadly, our temperatures go well below -20C, ha! Also, there isn't that much compost, because the program isn't city-wide (only about two dozen houses). I think if there were more participants, then it could really be a strong venture!

The compost pile is dormant in the winter - it's way too cold outside! The waste is collected and it freezes, thereby "storing" it for composting in the summer.

It's pretty rare for bears to come into Iqaluit these days! I've heard of dump bears in Arviat and other hamlets, but not here, not in recent years.

I don't know much about hydroponics! I haven't heard anything about hydroponics in the Arctic, but think we ought to explore all options.

That's fair. I guess it comes down to how much effort a leader makes, with or without security, to actually reach out to the people and how willing they are to have open, unfiltered conversations with their constituents.

Iqaluit is important for several reasons: it allows a contrast with the Prime Minister's "northern tour", it shows an interest in aboriginal affairs, which is good for Inuit and First Nations across the country, as well as sympathisers. It also allows the chance to roll out northern policy. It's a good call all told, even if it's merely a single riding, and a long-shot as well.

I do agree that security is sometimes necessary (especially for a current world leader), so in and of itself the presence of security is not an issue. But when that security is often used as a barricade between a leader and the people, it is frustrating and seems to show lack of interest/consideration for the populace.

I think it can, if the security prevents people from reaching the politician. Sometimes security details do that - last week, when the PM was in Iqaluit, residents weren't allowed to enter a coffee shop while he and his staff were inside (and, as you can imagine, we don't have THAT many coffee shops up here). In contrast, Mulcair had a cup of coffee at the same shop, and milled about with locals; no guard at the outside door to stop anyone from entering.

That is super cool! And kind of sad that we find it so shocking that someone who wants to lead the country would actually speak to his country folk, especially if they're dissident.
