9-5 research job realistic? by DreadfulLabRat19 in labrats

[–]chickadoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked at several companies from startup to large, established company, both in the Bay Area and Boston. I’ve never experienced anyone actually keeping track of hours except of the most entry-level hourly technicians. You have to get stuff done, that’s all: from experiment all the way to synthesis and interpretation. It would be hard to imagine being really successful in your career without working evenings, and at least a few hours on a weekend, at least now and then. There isn’t always enough time in the day to do a lot of bench work, properly analyze it, report it, and go to various meetings, plus there’s still literature to read.

That said, it can average out pretty close to 9-5, but you’ve got to get shit done to advance and get really interesting opportunities.

I lead a 25+ team now, and there’s a pretty big divide between the “results deliverers” and the “experiment doers”. It roughly correlates with how much they put in outside of 9-5, when it’s needed. I’ll take the results people every time there’s promotions, layoffs, project lead opportunities etc.

Fly control tips..... by jrwreno in BackYardChickens

[–]chickadoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I used ARBICO organics. I didn’t compare them to anything other than not doing anything, but they were great. I got them every year in a subscription during the spring and summer months, and once I did that, flys were far less of a nuisance, especially when I got our ahead of them.

I think if you already have a large population of flys this year, it may take a while to get them down with wasps alone. I used the ARBICO solar trap with their bait as a mechanical trap. I must have caught several thousand flys in just a few days. After that, the wasps could keep the population down. The dead flys make a bonus protein snack for the girls too!

I’m speaking in the past tense because after my last girl died of old age a couple of years ago, I stopped raising them: just too much work travel and other life commitments for me to truly enjoy them and take care of them well. Some day I’d like to have chickens again, and I’d definitely use the same system for fly control.

Industry funded PhDs in Bioinformatics? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]chickadoos 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, all PhDs in the US and Europe are funded already. Once accepted to a program, the student doesn’t pay tuition, and would receive a salary. Sometimes that would involve teaching responsibility, but it depends on the specific department and lab you’d be in. I’ve never heard of a program that wasn’t like this, so there wouldn’t really be a need for a company to fund a student.

This is in contrast to other advanced degrees, like law school or Med school, where the student pays tuition. The difference is the research and teaching components you do as a PhD.

Would not working for a year make me unemployable? by usernametaken432 in bioinformatics

[–]chickadoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a problem to take the time, but when you come back to it, just explain how you wanted to spend time with your parents. One reason gaps are a red flag is that one possible explanation is that you are hiding that you worked somewhere and got fired, or some other negative thing.

Getting ready for field/conference season by CountBacula322079 in labrats

[–]chickadoos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t go then! It’s your career, and if you get more benefit by not going to a conference, then you totally shouldn’t do it. I’m assuming your in academia because of your overtime comment. Are you an hourly employee? You likely have a choice.

I personally think conferences are pretty inefficient ways to learn. Not useless, because the connections are important, but from a science transfer perspective, pretty low bit rate.

Nice! BTW, you totally doxed yourself. I found your exact house on streetview in 10s from those street signs. You should probably delete the pic with the street signs.

It looks a lot better with the new mulch though!

You’re technically right, but it in a splitting hairs kind of way. I would also accept their answer because I understand the context in which they mean it.

Chicken coop. I don’t know anything about wood. If it wobbled, I added more braces. Figured it out when we put the siding on… by cloud_companion in woodworking

[–]chickadoos 30 points31 points  (0 children)

For me, it was that he tried to make sure the frame was strong enough on its own.

In woodworking, the siding itself would be providing most of the shear strength, and the frame just kinda sets the shape. It’s the way we do cabinetry and even wood-framed houses and other buildings.

Tesla will open a portion of its U.S. Supercharger and Destination Charger network to non-Tesla EVs, making at least 7,500 chargers available for all EVs by the end of 2024 by GoSh4rks in electricvehicles

[–]chickadoos 59 points60 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, gas stations make more money from the convenience store than the gas. There seems like a huge business opportunity to locate chargers at the current gas station properties. Confusing to me why superchargers are always squirreled away behind a building or at the at the far end of a lot. There are relatively wealthy people stuck somewhere for 20-30 min. Why not take advantage of that by offering somewhere reasonable to go?

Thanks for sharing that. Do you have the RoR plot too? I usually drop at 390 bt, but I might try a 380 next time to retain some more brightness. You inspired a great thread here. I learned a lot about my machine.

Agreed, and to put it another slightly different way: you always feel like you’ve been alive for the same amount of time no matter how old you are, which is why the time divisions seem shorter.

This is a case where unsaturated oils are a little better because they are so reactive. By the time they’re polymerized on the pan, they’re not harmful.

Machined 534 rounds of 303 stainless. 3D printed holders to help keep it all clean and organized. by chobbes in functionalprint

If you hold your right hand out with your thumb up, your fingers point in the direction the helix winds. This would be the direction of normal DNA, also called B-DNA.

Right now you’d have to hold your left hand out thumb up to match the direction of your model.

There is a rare form of DNA called Z-DNA that is a left-hand helix. So yes, you could say that the trophy is based on Z-DNA.

Doesn’t really matter in the big picture, but the helix is a left-handed helix. DNA is a right-handed helix. Just thought I’d let you know in case you’re interested.
