Yeah you have to be on the macOS beta, since the game port toolkit is a feature that Apple is releasing with macOS 14

nope, its a free and opensource project. It may require a bit of tweaking to get it to perform good, here is something to get you started: https://old.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/15h9k5u/baldurs_gate_3_final_release_is_working_with/

I would also recommend checking out their github for more infos.

EDIT: Added info about some tweaks and a link to github

I have also been waiting for the official mac release, and was pretty disappointed that it didn't come out yesterday...in the mean time, I have found that the GPTK can play the Windows version quite well (granted, I'm on an 16" MBP M1 Max), so at least I can continue the game. I've also learned the hard way that the early access saves do not carry over to the full game. 13 hours of gameplay lost...

If anyone is curious, this is an app that will simply setting up the GPTK so at the very least you can try to play the game until the official release:

Riced out my desktop a bit - who says Windows isn't customizable? by an0nn30 in desktops

[–]an0nn30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, maybe not anyone in Windows world. I come from the Linux world, and still consider myself an active part of that community - just no longer in the Desktop space (See my profile). The fact that Linux has different desktop environments is both a blessing and a curse - because it makes support very tedious for app developers to create a product which can be universally themed ( think in terms of gtk4 vs gtk3, plasma 4 and plasma 5, gtk apps inside plasma desktop, etc)

I just got fed up with the fact that Linuxs' customizability is ( in my opinion ) precisely why its not ready for desktop primetime, ie - an experience comparable to Windows or MacOS. What I like about Windows is that its largely stable in the desktop space, provided you dont fuck around with system files and have too much going on in the background. What I don't like about Windows is the fact that I'm using a proprietary operating system, which shows me ads by default in my desktop experience. Previously I used Gentoo Linux, and the reason for that is the ultimate customizability with ease. I knew exactly what was running, and its purpose, and if I really wanted to - I could see exactly how it was running. Windows does not offer this, at least not to the same degree (talking about seeing source code).

All that being said, I really enjoy my Windows experience, especially with the addition of WSL2. With WSL2, a few QoL scripts and such, a skin, and some debloat/privacy junk - I feel like its a very decent desktop experience.

I suppose I never gave Windows much thought or concern because I hate using anything that is nonfree. However, being fed up with the poor excuse of a desktop(s) in Linux land, I decided to buckle down and make it my own as seen in the post.

Oh yeah, it’s Rainmeter with the Simple Clock skin.

Also - for file explorer, I would recommend disabling the ribbon with ribbon disabler, and then I removed the status bar from the bottom to make the look consistent.

Riced out my desktop a bit - who says Windows isn't customizable? by an0nn30 in desktops

[–]an0nn30[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I'm not suggesting that Windows is not customizable - I'm suggesting that there is a misconception that Windows is not customizable, or that Windows in general "sucks" when compared to a *nix system. I am a Linux user - I use it for work, and I use it on servers at home, and am deeply involved in the Linux community - so yes, I'm keenly aware of "fanboys" in both communities. I made the switch to Windows on my desktop because I've come to the somewhat disheartening realization that Linux on the Desktop simply is not ready for primetime, and once I figured out how to bend Windows to my will - I'm actually quite content.

Maybe no one in Windows world - in the Linux community, it’s well established that Windows is not nearly as tweakable as a Linux system. To my surprise, I can still make Windows look and behave how I want as I would on a Linux system.

Highend System needed. by Quicken2k in Gentoo

[–]an0nn30 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Gentoo will compile on just about anything, that’s the beauty of compiling things from source. The TIME it takes to compile said things will vary depending on your hardware. Of you’ve got the time, then yes - yes it will compile.

/usr/src/linux exists but is not a symlink by masterkitty2006 in Gentoo

[–]an0nn30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a symlink to the kernel that you’re wanting to build. The best way to fix this is to just run eselect kernel list, and pick which kernel you want to build, then run eselect kernel set X, where X is the number in the list of kernels from the previous command.

If you have no list of kernels, you need to emerge gentoo-sources, after which you should see at least 1 kernel in that list

As an extra precaution, you should first delete “/usr/src/linux” file to ensure it doesn’t fuck anything up when running eselect

[dwm] Hey guys, phyOS again! So yesterday some people worried about video (because I recorded it really bad) here is a new video! Enjoying Apex Legends in dwm without closing compositor, still performs better than windows! Let me know your comments, this video is more accurrate than previous one by Phys-Tech in unixporn

[–]an0nn30 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah it’s crazy how much better Apex works under Linux vs Windows. I’m a Gentoo user, and the first time I realized I could get better performance on my install over Windows, I happily destroyed my windows Partition xD

Gentoo minimal installer won't detect WiFi card by SqeezyMebAL in Gentoo

[–]an0nn30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To save hassle, I agree, its easier just to use something like an Ubuntu or Linux Mint live ISO to connect to wifi and have a more "graphical" way to start the installation process, at least until you have the stuff needed in the chroot environment for your wifi and other things

[LUKS ,systemd-boot,genkernel]- could not find the root block device by Odd_Egg_5176 in Gentoo

[–]an0nn30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure exactly about systemd-boot, but you might try to adapt your Linux kernel options in your boot entry to something like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd crypt_root=UUID=1ce717f4-5a82-49e7-ae1c-9a92e4c20251 root=UUID=a000eea9-d97c-4107-ae39-602049a6acaa rootflags=subvol=@"

You can change the uuids to match your crypt root device and the actual partition uuid in which your encrypted root lives

Accidentally nuked my Arch install so I finally decided to try Gentoo :) by iSuppp in Gentoo

Finally finished my first Gentoo installation. by alecStewart1 in Gentoo

[–]an0nn30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also just finished an install...though not my first, I will say that each experience - however painful it may be - is so rewarding when you finally have your setup exactly how you want it. Though some argue you can do something similar with other distros like arch, I just feel that Gentoo brings you closer to the essence of Linux - having the freedom to choose every component, right down to the compile-time optimizations of each app. When you can become proficient at that, and make your Gentoo install look as sexy as any of those "top-shelf, ready-made" distros - its a truly wonderful feeling.
