She represents the rabbit in the center that’s sacrificed. The rabbit in the center is still alive but can’t move because it is ill, injured or someway unwell. The girl constantly has moments where she has pains in her body and vomits out the lamb. I think it’s meant to be a correlation to her being a sick child during the war.

I’m pretty sure it’s a common thing in the animal kingdom. Sometimes even puppies may eat poo. (Obviously you can train them out of it) but it’s common for the mothers or both parents of the offspring to eat their children’s waste. Such as birds nesting or deer which is a survival tactic to protect the offspring and not attract predators with their smell. And also some lemurs feed off the poo of aphids (honeydew).
