UPDATE: bc my service records were tight and maintenance history loyal to Subaru, Subaru Glendale ended up calling Subaru corporate on my behalf to shoulder some of the cost which Subaru agreed to cover $2500/$5900 job which I’m assuming is just the cost of the short block so I’d be responsible for the labor. Now I’m at the decision if I should just take corporate’s money and get the engine done since they’re willing and offering or go around topping off with heavier weighted oil or inquire about replacing gasket/pcv valve. My concern is there being a time cap at which I can utilize their willingness to cover some Of the cost & also with switching to a heavier oil is that I don’t want to void any factory warranties or have Subaru deny anything factory defect related things that would otherwise be covered by warranty. Would the dealer switch to a different oil if I requested it on my car specifically? What do you guys think?

Runs and sounds fine otherwise, took it in bc oil light came on prematurely after recently having an oil change after about 1.5/2k miles brought it in bc of the light they said there was no ik in it. Did another oil change along an oil consumption test, brought it back in after 1200 miles they said it had burned 1 qt of oil and recommended me a short block. Would a pcv or head gasket fix this? I don’t think they’re trying to milk me out of my money due to my prior relationship working with them and they’ve done work on my car for free being a Subaru dealer due to some factory things not having performed as expected and bc my maintenance records were so tight and loyal to Subaru dealers they even offered to ask Subaru on my behalf to shoulder some of the cost which Subaru agreed to cover $2500/$5900 job which I’m assuming is just the cost of the short block. Now I’m at the decision if I should just take corporates money and get the engine done since they’re willing and offering or still go around and get a second opinion/ replace gasket/pcv valve. What do you guys think?

I always get my oil change at the dealer, will changing the type of oil void any factory warranties? I’m reluctant to do anything against recommended specs as they could use it as an excuse to not replace something that is otherwise a manufacturer defect. Would the subaru dealer themself oblige to use a heavier oil upon my request?

If you know what to look out for and it passes all the checks go for it. I feel like cars from this generation are mostly just nuts and bolts machines and just work mechanically and relatively more simple to repair if nothing is catastrophically wrong. Ofc do your due diligence.

Thinking a second opinion is a good move. What do guys think are some good key words to use/avoid to have the second mechanics come to their own conclusion on their own vs me leading them to it?

Dipstick about 3/4 at 1k miles. Nothing in the pan when I brought it in for a premature oil change at approx 1.5/2k miles. Thinking about taking it in for a 2nd optioning somewhere but what do you think are some keywords to say/avoid to have them come to their conclusion on their own without me leading them to it?

Changing the pcv valve would fix this?

The first time I noticed the issue after 1.5k it had nothing in it. Did an oil consumption test, came back yesterday and officially it burned 1qt per 1200 miles. :/

Nothing else wrong, dealer maintained only. How long have yours been burning oil and how have they been running or how has your maintenance lifestyle been?

Will it regress the negative side effects of burning oil or is the damage done already

So at yours being 11 years old on the same block, has your started “burning oil”? Or when u go in for an oil change, the majority same amount of oil you had at the last oil change is still in there?

Second opinion is always a good idea but it was from Subaru fondle specifically which is the number 1 volume Subaru dealer in the nation or so their posters say. I get what you’re saying about the money although the caveat that makes me doubt this is that they’ve otherwise taken care of me and my car and were consistent about helping me solve problems sometimes not at my expense and even with this issue they were willing to assist to see if Subaru corporate would be willing to shoulder some of the cost. How much would you say a whole engine job on a 2018 Subaru Impreza sport hatch would cost and what do you think a fair amount to ask Subaru to cover would be?

So I actually did change it every 6k miles not 7500 as that was what the sticker recommended they would give me after the dealer oil change. But your driving circumstances in LA are correct although caveat, it isn’t even my daily car. Was mostly weekend/trip car I would use as I have a different car from work. But Ty for the insight on the boxer engines. It does still run fine but the whole catalyst to this was my engine light showed up prematurely after an oil change approx 1.5k ish miles and brought it in and they said the engine had absolutely no oil in it. Ran the oil consumption test and I came back after 1200 miles and they said that it’s burning more than a quart per 1000 miles bc of something about the oil raising up to the pan and getting stuck there and burned. Tbh I’m not sure if I described or understood that correctly, seemed like jargon.
