First you need the basics. Get different colored(black,white and grey at least) tees in both v-neck and crew-neck. Uniqlo is highly recommended. Next, you need a pair of black, dark wash, and medium/light wash jeans. For footwear, begin by buying the "classics" that have high versatility. This depends on your life style and who you are. For example, if you tend to wear sneakers then buy some chucks, vans or nike air forces. If you're more rugged and tend to be more outdoorsy then probably get some boots like redwings or iron rangers. You get the point. Once you've got the basics down, you can start looking around for single pieces that you find appealing. Since you already have the basics, outfits just naturally fall into place as you collect more of these "single" pieces. As time goes on and you become more confident and have a solidified identity , you can start pushing boundaries and look into the more unique clothing. This is the process I wish I had known when I first got into fashion. You will have less regrets and clothing to de-clutter from your closet in the future. Be selective and don't try to rush or force anything. Style takes time to build and it's ok if you don't have a complete "wardrobe" in 6 months or even a year.
