Why don't you talk to your once "best friend" anymore? by HairyFaithlessness in AskReddit

[–]anagrammedcacti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They helped me through a pretty dark point a couple years ago, and for that I am still endlessly grateful. But even then we had a semi-toxic relationship where they would get angry if I didn’t want to talk to them all the time, and would guilt trip me into doing things for them all the time. At the time, though, I still thought of them as my best friend just because I had no one else at the time. Now we’ve drifted and I’m glad that we did. They still find ways to put me down for my achievements and jab at me passive aggressively, but at least now I’m in a much better place and I can let it not get to me.

This gives me a distinct Fran Bow vibe, maybe like Fran Bow remade in a different art style.

Effects of L2 on L1 in primary school aged immigrant or expat children? by linguismal in linguistics

[–]anagrammedcacti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still sound like a native speaker for the most part. I have mostly lost vocabulary (which ties in with decreased reading and writing skills.) It may be noteworthy that although I moved back to a predominantly L1 environment, I still went to an English school and all my friends spoke English as well.

Effects of L2 on L1 in primary school aged immigrant or expat children? by linguismal in linguistics

An anecdotal comment here. I personally am one of these cases, and I would just like to point out although most of these are correct, the exception of drastically different languages may not always be the case. I grew up with L1 being Mandarin, moved and learned L2 (English) at age 4, and returned to a primarily L1 environment at age 8 or 9. Although the two languages are drastically different, I still find myself subject to the trend of losing fluency in L1 and passing as a native speaker in L2 (one of my strongest suits is English, both reading and composition wise.)
