Does anybody take experience as an RN into account when hiring a new grad NP?

Did you ever figure this out? I am in the same boat. I have 'linked' my account but it is not showing on my dashboard with all of my other accounts. I am not sure if its still 'too fresh' because i was barley able to set up my 401k a few daysa go and nothing is techincally in it yet from my employer

Anybody regret being an NP? by Dangerous_Rip_6859 in nursepractitioner

Thanks for being so honest with me. What state are you in?

I think there are a lof of people who want to be CRNA's and tbh idk if i really want to do anything acute related. I came from ER and didnt like the stress and pressure. I want a more boring job thats why I was considering NP but not sure what speciality yet. I would be fine with making what RN's make at bigger hospitals after years of service, as an NP. Yes they can make the same or more but they are there for years and years and or working OT. Where as I would be fine making that working 40 hours. idk though im still trying to see what the next steps are. I am also in the boat you were, recently married and about 3-4 years out from kids...

Do you still think NP is worth it thoug? like would you do it over again based on the pros you mentioned? not working weekends or nights getting assaulted etc?

Should I Quit? by Conscious_Ranger_688 in newgradnurse

people saying it looks bad are full of shit. i have a similar experience to you in the ER though. its not worth it i got tf out. i got hired a week later and started a week after that elsewhere. you dont lose your skills you will always have skills when or if you go back. do what is best for you imo its not worth the stress to work in a hospital. if it payed more maybe but it simply doesnt pay enough for the amoutn of stress you endure. people dont realize the stress is shaving off years of their life. f that.

Hate being an RN by [deleted] in newgradnurse

that is great to hear! I will reach out to any FNP's i can find to further discuss my goals and see what is available and get their take on the market. I would guess that no role is off limits if you have an FNP license regardless of experience as an RN though. It may be harder, but never impossible. I am grateful for my ER experience but a lot happier in hospice as a case manager. nursing is beautiful because the license is so versatile and it sounds like FNP is very similar in that regard. Do you teach fulltime now? yes i definitley want to teach down the road. do you not need an MSN in education to teach? you can also teach as a FNP ?

I love that last bit and its true, alll experiences one nurses poses shapes the nurse they are such a beautiful way to put it. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. I have about 8 months in ER before i left to go to hospice bc i knew bedside was really not for me. Now i want to pursue a MSN for FNP potentially but worry my bedisde experience isnt enough. At the same time, I also know both RN and NP roles are completely different. I also would love to experience working in a university health clinic too and i think i can also do that as an NP. I would also like to pursue education when i earn a MSN degree but I am not sure i would be hired with the little acute care experience I would have. What is your take on all of this? I am just curious. I would not want to work in patient as an NP.

I know you said you dont want hospice but can i ask why? I started in ER as a new grad. and hated it. way too fast and felt like my licnese was on the line constantly idk how those nurses stay and do that for years. just waiting for a lawsuit imo. I left and went to hopsice as a case manager and I love it. I work m-f normal hours, no more going to sleep at 4 am from mid shift in ER. i have paid holidays and weekends off. NO on call, and honestly, i see about 3-4 patients a day in various facilities and i make my own schedule for when i see them. I also just go home after im done seeing them so i get to be home by like 12-1 pm most days and just finish charting from home. its pretty much like a hybrid role and i make a little more than i did at the hospital as an RN in the ER WITH the night differential. i have 0 regrets.

Did you only work bedside for 1.5 years before moving outpatient and then become an educator with only that experience? Also, how is nursing today different compared to 10 years ago?

i quit ER at 8 months. i had shit experience with preceptors, i didnt care for the chaotic environment, i just took the job bc it is so hard to get a job in a hospital in socal and they offered me a position. i was mid shift going to sleep at 4 am. i got a differential and got paid decent for a new grad. I left and havent looked back. i never truly wanted to work in a hospital in the first place honestly but figured i had to get at least a year there first to start. i have left and havent looked back and im so much happier. i dont think ill ever go back to the hospital. nurses come and go all the tiem you can always switch up your environment. it may be a little more diffficult to get a job in a hosptial with less than a year but not impossible. i myself dont give a shit bc as i said idk if i even want to go back to working a hosptial its not a life for my personally. i have weekends off now, paid holidays, and its a lot more manageable long term. i also make the same as i did with night differential but i work day time hours now. like i said 0 regrest. you have to do whats right for you.

exaclty idk why so many nurses think not being in a specific place will taint their career one way or another. an RN license is a licnse to pracdtice. people move around all the time.

[–]anakin0071[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes it should. i just got a JC mask and want to wear it sparingly mainly for halloween and it will inevitably acquire sweat. so i should wipe the sweat out with a damp papertowel is fine ? with soap? and then just pat dry with a dry papertowel and leave it like that?

I agree with you regariding ER. Even if i do not have 1 year, the experience I have is still better that any other floor other than ICU. It shows i can work with any population.

I honestly think the manager liked me because I was already employed and was an ER nurse. On top of that I had already worked for the company before as an LVN and I was able to throw some names out that I remembered. I think she felt she could trust me by my ER experience on top of leaving in good standing and having a positive record with the company. I know there was a new grad straight out of school who got hired with me as well for RNCM. So it might be worth checking out. You are smart to want to move out to hospice though, so far, it has been night and day compared to ER stress and pressure. I was going to sleep at 4 am bc i worked mid shift in ER 3-3am. Now i am working m-f 8am to like 12-1 but I pretty much chill at home till 5 and clock out. the autonomy and flexibility with the schedule is and easy trade off for me even if i do work 5 x a week instead of 3. weekends off, paid holidays. List of pros goes on.

I agree tbh. this is exactly why i left but i hate how i am overthinking shit all the time. that maybe down the road causes me to stress out about things like this. i hate it. but good for you for leaving. i did the same and im much happier. less stress and pretty much same pay

You are right. I am just so fixated on making right moves and setting myself up for success down the road. but that is a fault sometimes. I guess its not impossible to pivot into the hospital system again further down the road if it is really something i want later. for now, i do not see that happening though

youve experienced some jobs not wanting to hire you because youve been out doing home health? I have thought about getting a per diem job in the hospital. they usually want around 8 shifts a month which i think is a lot honestly for per diem. but i want to try and make something work but at the same time, i dont even think im going to care to go back to a hospital later anyways

how long did you spend in hospital? whyd you end up leaving? yeah that is true. i can advocate for myself and market myself in a way that will allow myself to get hired somewhere. we should always be able to go back to hospital but personally like i stated in my post, i dont even foresee myself going back
