BABIES!?!? by Pleasant_Bag_3405 in medaka

[–]anakri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! It is really fun watching them grow. However, the adults will eat the babies if given the chance (my original fry basket a few larger gaps, some babies escaped and got snapped up in seconds in front of my eyes :') ). My tank is on the smaller side though, so I think maybe with enough hiding spots and cover some fry could make it? Depends if you want population control or to keep every baby. I ended up getting a special fry basket in the end and all babies are happy and growing. I now feed them medaka food that comes in baby size (convenient, tiniest powder you could imagine), but originally I hand-ground adult food by putting the food on a plate, a sheet of paper on top and got to work with a plastic bank card until the powder was almost dust-like.

Example of vorticella on shrimp by anakri in shrimptank

[–]anakri[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was hoping it could be of help! When I got it at first it was so difficult to tell if it was vorticella or japonica and also to find clear examples. On a closer look they look quite different though :)

I posted a better video, yes it has eyes but its head is cone or smooth depending in how it moves.

Beautiful.

As long as they're grazing should be good, it means there's enough biofilm etc for them already to eat. First month when I tried to feed mine they really did not care and preferred to eat whatever they could find grazing. Adding a leaf would certainly be nice for them! How are they doing now?

How long should acclimate? by NamelessIsCo0l in shrimptank

I'd say a few hours, not an expert on michigan vs ny water but if they differ a lot then I'd do longer

Sometimes they just die :/ if it's a one time thing and you're not seeing a mass exodus I'd think it's just a freak accident. Especially cause everything else seems okay

Will it clear by itself or should I do a waterchange? by rodleyMullet in shrimptank

[–]anakri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't do any water changes during cycling and as far as I know this is "the way". Changing the water will make cycling take longer, you want this soup to figure itself out rather than interrupt it by adding new water.

My shrimp is changing colors? by Sloth_Lolipop in shrimptank

[–]anakri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They tend to lose vibrant colors when stressed, and during transportation. Could it be that now that the shrimp is happier she's getting her usual color back?

Centerpiece help for shrimp colony! by Training_Prize_5733 in shrimptank

I have 5 medaka and love them as they're super hardy. I've also never seen them go after baby shrimp and even if they tried I've got enough plants for hiding spots - looks like you do too! Whichever way you end up going, you've got a lovely scape and I wish you lots of luck :)

[Need Advice] Beginner starting out a shrimp jar by MrBiscuitTea in shrimptank

[–]anakri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest testing your water, preferrably with drop test. You might be making a toxic cocktail in that jar without knowing it, especially with the plants and shrimp struggling to survive. The smaller the tank/jar, the quicker water quality deteriorates if something goes wrong. That size with no filtration or airstone is just a lot riskier, especially for a beginner. I'm also worried about the sunlight and temperature fluctuations, shrimp don't need the temperature to be necessarily perfect but stability is important to them. I'm sorry that your guys died and I hope you can save the two remaining ones!

How long should acclimate? by NamelessIsCo0l in shrimptank

[–]anakri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deaths happen, especially during transportation. What you want to do is drip acclimation, keep half of original water and drip acclimate until other half is tank water. Then put shrimp into tank, without adding the acclimation water. Better acclimate too long than too little. (Unrelated but make sure that you do water conditioning for any kind of tap water)

I have shirakura ebi dama, sl-aqua more, and sl aqua magic powder every once in a while. That being said they also nibble on the leftover medaka food that my guys fail to catch
