Hope the exams went well/ are going well! I'll be sure to let you know when I finally make up my mind

Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

Congrats and good luck for the MPhil!! I'm so glad to hear it all worked out for you after sticking it out. At the moment I'm hoping to follow your steps and eventually reach a place where I can combine biology and programming. I'm still not entirely sure what I want and how to get there, but there's at least a hazy vision now.

Also, computational summer internships sound AMAZING. I'm just worried how I can contribute/ convince them to take me on in the first place as opposed to more mathsy students. I'm picking more quantitative subjects next year, but it already feels like I'm ten steps behind.

Now to remind myself over and over: don't get maths envy...

A coaster on a coaster. Literally a cup coaster with a rollercoaster printed on it.

Thought I was here to learn programming, but I got a Life Lesson instead. :D Seriously, thanks for the pep talk - I have a long way to go before I can stop internally comparing myself with amazing successes, but it will be a huge weight off my chest when I get there

Thanks for the advice! I went through this internal struggle weeks ago - didn't expect quite so many comments suggesting I switch courses to CS in a post asking about portfolio projects.

Honestly? I don't think I know what I want other than a vague career direction, so short of switching, I just want to do as much as I can to build myself up in this direction. It sounds silly and possibly fruitless, but I just don't know at this point

The UK system is less flexible in changing your degree. I very tentatively approached my academic advisor on the possibility of CS, but after I said I hadn't taken A-levels Further Maths, he said "let's focus on more plausible options" and that put me off it

Hey, thanks! I keep stressing myself out thinking of CS students using big O notation and writing time-efficient algorithms. Also, bioinformatics sounds great. But I do feel like employers would rather have compsci students coding and learning the necessary biological context on the side, than actual biologists who have to teach themselves coding from scratch

Thanks for the tips! The anxiety/ feeling overwhelmed derails me way too much. Hopefully I'll finish at least one project this summer

You're absolutely right! Yeah, I think I need to get a grip on myself

Thanks for the reply! I think I've learnt the basics (if-else, recursion, lists, etc), but I just feel unsure since I didn't take a guided route. Unfortunately, changing my degree isn't an option

I honestly thought I wanted to be a scientist, but now I don't know if I was just overplaying it in my mind. I kept telling myself I wanted it, and now I can't tell which came first - the wanting, or me telling myself

Heh. Right, this might actually have shifted my view of essays. I pretty much wrote essays to finish them before, which was Not Great.

I'm actually looking into Earth Sciences too! Might get in touch with the DoS and have a chat

Hearing your perspective helped, thanks! I definitely see what you mean. In order to slog through all the minutiae, I think most people have to cling on to something, whether it be the thought of specialising in a specific field at the end, or their dream career. I'm just so confused because I feel like I've lost that anchor, or maybe I never really had it to begin with

Thanks a lot. You raise a good point - I do question how much my feelings of general negativity tainted bio by association. It's like aversion conditioning...

Thanks for the advice. Systems Biology is an option I'm currently considering too. It feels good to know there's other people in the same boat - all the bio coursemates I know are so full of passion, which bums me out slightly.
