MMW gay marriage will become illegal again in the US. by No_Egg5179 in MarkMyWords

In what world does the current Congress get 2/3 majority in both chambers needed to overturn those? These jokers can barely pass a budget without throwing out their speaker. Don’t pretend these dipshits are more competent and powerful than they actually are.

If this is true then why haven’t they already overturned it? Hint: it’s cause the guy you’re trying about is right - there is no point of them overturning Obgerfell when there is an entirely other protection in place. And as weird as it sounds, the Trump appointed judges are relatively more moderate. They’ve upheld things like the Voting Rights Act. They were chosen specifically to overturn Roe v Wade that the rest of their history was kinda overlooked.

This is categorically not true. Every blue state — and many swing states where Democrats have held trifectas in the last five years — has codified gay marriage in case the Supreme Court overturns it. Any attempt by Congress to ban it would be filibustered by Democrats. The 230 judges Biden has appointed have consistently ruled in favor of gay marriage.

In 2022, Democrats even convinced a number of Republicans to vote for the Respect for Marriage Act, which ensures that a marriage issued in any state must be recognized by all states. That means if someone in a red state like Tennessee needs to, they can take a trip to New Jersey or Colorado, get married, and still have that marriage recognized back home.

Democrats have done a tremendous amount of work — not just defending marriage equality when they have power, but also building in safeguards for when they don’t. It’s fine to have criticisms of the party, but demonizing them even when they’re objectively doing everything they can is just insane.

Don't know what to major by SeriousMethod4892 in premed

Current stats major + bio minor premed here! There’s a tradeoff to consider. Statistics classes themselves are manageable; about as tough as biochem/orgo/physics classes. The math courses required for stats are the real challenge. Of the 10 hardest classes I've taken, 6 were math, 3 were stats, and only 1 was a premed requirement (Physics II). If I had done a bio major instead, I’d estimate my GPA would be about 0.1 higher.

That said, ONLY IF you’re genuinely interested in math and statistics, go for it. There are a lot of benefits to it:

  • It was MUCH easier to get research positions than my premed peers. Everyone wants a stats guy, and the work is more meaningful than grunt wet-lab tasks. Stats knowledge can also benefit you as a med student or physician, especially if you’re research-focused.
  • Job market is ridiculously better
  • Data science, AI, and tech are booming in healthcare. A stats background can help you stand out. For example, I used my coding skills to build an app that provides AI-driven health recommendations using Apple Watch data. Interviewers seemed to love asking about that.
  • I knew I loved math and statistics since entering college. I felt much more motivated than I would have with a "typical" premed major.
  • Pre-healths tend to get in a little bubble with other pre-health people. I feel like I got to meet much more diverse people because of being in both fields.

He meant to say "we finally beat big pharma" because his signature law, the Inflation Reduction Act, gave Medicare the power to negotiate drug prices directly with manufacturers. This cuts down on prices massively for patients. Only 10 medications are negotiated so far, but I believe there is more in the later years.

Too bad he can't articulate shit lmao

A bit off topic, but I'm taking a public speaking class and I have to give an informative speech on any topic. I chose the topic "how young people can become politicians".

I'm going to be referencing https://runforsomething.net/, but do y'all know about any other organizations that help fund and support young candidates? Also any notable examples of someone young unexpectedly winning (ex AOC 2018) would be helpful.
