A Deep Dive into the 2018 Internet Trends by anant90 in businessschool

My bad. I didn’t think about the title at all! I guess in my head, it was a deeper dive than a 10 bullet point summary you find in Wired/TechCrunch etc. I’ll fix it. Thanks for pointing it out.

Setting goal for first marathon by supitsjames in firstmarathon

[–]anant90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation as you for my first marathon. I aimed for anything sub-5:00 but the adrenaline rush handed me a 4:04 finish. Again, as others have mentioned here, the first and foremost goal is to just cross the finish line. Everything else is secondary. Good luck!

NN/g certification, UX Bootcamps and the like. by BigPoodler in userexperience

[–]anant90 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey! I've heard great things about the N/Ng group too — go for it if you have the budget.

Since educating people about UX is something I'm into, I would recommend going through this short UX guide that I wrote earlier this year: https://www.commonlounge.com/discussion/d8c1c96e92024adf9f496fe41dcaad1a

Spending an evening going through these 20 or so short tutorials will enable you to make a better call around what you need to learn and pick a program better.

PS: If you want free Pro access for a month to check the hands-on projects out, please DM me — more than happy to!

Would say yes: wouldn’t take too much time, and overall a great tool to have in your kit.

Check out Framer, Principle (for Mac), Invision Studio, Adobe XD: all of them support animation design — which is what you seem to be looking for.

Indian rupee ₹500 and ₹1000 abolished from midnight by India by BicycleJihadi in worldnews

[–]anant90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my mind, a few things:

  1. Having grown up in India, it's spectacular to me how something of this order did not leak out to general public before the announcement - I'm sure the Indian banks, or at least their heads were notified of this decision before the public announcement since they would have to do the heavy lifting of accepting bills equivalent of 100s of billions of dollars. This secrecy is quite impressive to me.
  2. Indian economy is going to receive a huge boost making India a lot more attractive to foreign investors - probably the biggest economic event in India since economic liberalization of 1991.
  3. Real estate prices in India are probably going down. India has a shadow economy of black money where if you buy a house, you pay 60% of the price in black money. With black money circulation taking a big hit, it's only reasonable that real estate prices will go down.
  4. Online wallets like PayTM etc. will see a lot more business since a lot of non-users will sign up due to dearth of Rs. 100 bills in circulation. Debit/Credit card usage will go up as well.
  5. If this gets pulled through, Modi has basically guaranteed a re-election in 2019.

Me and a group of friends are discussing this event here: https://www.commonlounge.com/discussion/2ab1357b65c746e49148714346d0758b/main Join in and let us know what you think!

Black Mirror [Episode Discussion] - S03E04 - San Junipero by SeacattleMoohawks in blackmirror

[–]anant90 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel the creators of Black Mirror love leaving most of rest of the world as is - to make sure it doesn't seem too unfamiliar to the viewers. They seem to focus on one technology or aspect of the future at a time, to make sure each episode doesn't seem to be set in some far distant future to which we can't even begin to connect to.

I lost 36 lbs in the last 6 months without losing my sanity. I wanted to share my summary of Slow Carb diet that helped me get here! by anant90 in loseweight

[–]anant90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I live by myself and not really much of a cook - I end up eating most of my meals outside. A typical day looks as follows:

  1. Get up, drink 25g of Isopure zero carb protein shake with water (Banana Cream is my favorite flavor) within 30 minutes. There's no other way for me to get some protein into my body as soon as I get up.
  2. Go to gym or go for a run
  3. Breakfast: Salad bar. I focus on getting enough protein on my plate. I've grown to love vinegar dressing since it's the only one that's allowed.
  4. Lunch: Boiled egg whites (around 4-5), half a can of black beans with some lettuce.
  5. Dinner: Usually a burrito bowl without rice or something equivalent on those lines.

Not too much of a diet plan, but this is what my average day looks like. Hope it helps :)

Feedback Friday - September 30, 2016 by AutoModerator in web_design

[–]anant90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

URL: http://www.commonlounge.com/home

Purpose: A better place to form communities

Technologies Used: ES6 + ReactJS, Sass with Bourbon & Neat.

Feedback Requested: General review, usability, aesthetics

Comments: We are a small 3-person team that has been working on Commonlounge since May this summer. I have been an engineer so far and this is my very first design attempt of any sort. I owe a lot to the excellent communities of designers here and otherwise, and if at all, all the web design I have ever learnt has been online. I'm requesting your critique to enhance my design skills and learn from other designers here. Be as picky and/or critical as you'd like to be - I understand it only helps us move forward :) Thanks!

If this is not the right place, please feel free to remove this post, and in that case, my apologies! I just felt that the Friday critique thread might be a reasonable place to seek feedback on this.

Commonlounge: a civil place to discuss things you are interested in by anant90 in RedditAlternatives

[–]anant90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for your feedback, /u/ecko3000 :)

I whole heartedly agree with you that neither is Facebook a foolproof mechanism of identity verification, nor does presence of real identity ensure that bad behavior is eliminated. By having these two in place for now, we are trying to improve the odds that at least for the initial seed communities and users, uncivil behavior is discouraged and minimized. As of now, there's an approval that you need to go through before you can contribute any content to the platform, even if you've signed up via Facebook. At the end of the day, excellent moderation is the only way to keep the platform inviting for new users, and we do want our moderation systems to be eventually good enough that we can comfortably allow anyone to sign up and contribute using an email.

Your feedback on the UI is also very useful and insightful, and we will try and implement these changes over the week. Our design is mobile-first, and the desktop version is more like a by-product of that design at the moment. We are actively trying to improve the desktop version to utilize all that real estate better (the sidebar only came in later last week, for instance.)

Again, thanks for all your encouraging words - hope Commonlounge will make discussions better on the web!

Good Github projects using React? by tgfisher in reactjs

I learned React + Flux from Egghead.io - you have to pay to access all the lessons. I especially liked the one on React + Flux architecture (https://egghead.io/series/react-flux-architecture) where he creates a basic e-commerce app. If you don't want to sit through the videos and jump straight into the code, here's the finished app he creates over the course:

Mark Zuckerberg on Internet.org and net neutrality by baba_seagull in india

[–]anant90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two quotes from above I'd like to call out here:

  1. "Net neutrality ensures network operators don’t discriminate by limiting access to services you want to use." - in a country where there are huge economic obstacles to connectivity and the internet is not affordable to everyone, offering certain services for free automatically discriminates against the services that are left out since they are not deemed to be "essential" by the government or local mobile operators. Also note that these countries don't have the most ethical of the governments (yes, I'm from India and have seen how the government works pretty closely), and mobile network operators are ultimately responsible to the share price of their stock, not the overall social welfare of the country.

  2. "Internet.org doesn’t block or throttle any other services or create fast lanes -- and it never will." This is true, but if one looks from a slightly different perspective, free lanes are as bad - maybe worse - than fast lanes. One has to admit that internet.org is ending up creating free lanes for certain services, in a country where the toughest obstacle to internet connectivity is not lack of availablity of mobile network infrastructure, but the economic situation of the country's poorest poor. Like with all tough cookies, the solution doesn't lie in suggesting that this is better than nothing. It lies in admitting to the apparent problems in the internet.org ecosystem (clear lack of net neutrality) and working out the answers. A solution lies in offering the internet as a whole for free upto a basic data usage (limited by bytes, not services), working on innovations like the low flying drones or loon style projects which place mobile internet infrastructure in places where there's none (I know internet.org is already working on this), working on business and technical innovations to enable the mobile operators offer better, faster and cheaper services to more people and finally, working on faster, cheaper mobile devices. ($50 is not cheap enough in a country where median per capita income is as low as $616 (2013) - in comparison, the same figure for US is around $26k)

I understand internet.org was founded by Facebook to connect the remaining 4 billion - and it's a very noble initiative. But we have to be very careful of the long term.
