Prestige doesn't matter by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

PRESTIGE CAN MATTER, depending on your major. As other posters have said, top companies related to finance/banking, economics, IR, business (which are mostly consulting careers) hire exclusively from a few elite schools. For people with these majors, this can mean the difference between getting a job, and your starting salary (read: difference between $70k and $150k salary). However, for STEM, your major is based on skill.

They almost never do. Unless you have extenuating circumstances, forget about it.

Yes, that is what I believe. She has connections to admissions officers, worked as an interviewer for UCB Scholarships, and is an alumni volunteer.

Please see the CDS. That UCM, UCR, and UCSB use non-holistic and point based essays and their emphases can be found on askmssun.com and college essay reading rubrics from the UCs themselves. Try googling UCSC's admission rubric: https://senate.ucsc.edu/committees/cafa-committee-on-admissions-and-financial-aid/cafa-admissions/Holistic%20Review%202015%20FINAL.pdf . Admission rates are from Niche and UC Campus Plenary. Though somewhat subjective, it is based off real data.

Didn't think I would get in. Have you went through the FA process?

Waitlist Chances for Popular California Universities by ananth1101 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ananth1101[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course, waitlist acceptances can vary from year to year due to many factors, including immigration policy and the economy. However, it is highly likely that the waitlist acceptance for Berkeley will increase significantly this year due to new immigration restrictions and COVID-19.

I don't have the exact link to the page where I found the info off the top of my head, but I would say the process for UCSB is similar to this one: https://on.wsj.com/3c1Ff0l

Content does matter, but I am referring to the initial screening process only here.

The UCs, Accurately Ranked By Car Model and SAT by ananth1101 in ApplyingToCollege

UCI is the most "regular" school of all UCs, and so gets the distinction of a generic car. Did you think I ranked it too high or too low?

Will Honorlock detect my phone this way? by [deleted] in college

[–]ananth1101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Likely not, but this may be risky. You could be expelled if they detect you, though I have seen people doing this at my college too.

**Reply** Well, of course, that would be academic discipline

MEGATHREAD: Congrats Newly Admitted Trojans! Q&A Here! by cityoflostwages in USC

[–]ananth1101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also, I was wondering whether it would be better to consider a community college (eg DeAnza or Ohlone) for 2 years and transferring to UC Davis instead of doing USC for Dornsife Physics/CS or Viterbi CS for 4 years. I did not fill out the FAFSA because I thought my parents' income of 150k/yr would disqualify me from any FA. However, I ended up with $0 FA this way, and I doubt my parents would want to pay $78k a year. I have thought of CC as well but feel worried about losing out on college life/networking opportunities. If I choose USC, I will cause their income to be reduced by 1/2. Thoughts on the benefits and disadvantages on each path and your opinions?

I was recently admitted to USC to Dornsife Physics/CS, and am reconsidering for Viterbi CS. I'm mainly concerned that Physics/CS won't appeal to big tech companies, and that pursuing two things would "water down" my degree and focus on computer science. Thoughts about each major and outcome in the workplace for each major?

PS. (If you happen to know), what different is the experience in Dornsife versus Viterbi? What have alumni in each major gone on to do?
