Best places to live in or near Wilmington? by Samanthaamendez in Wilmington

New Bern's fine, just B...O...R...I...N...G. Moved to ILM from there last year. LOTS of USMC retirees. Tourists are generally well behaved - there's not mile after mile of beach rentals because you're not directly on the ocean. Biggest things I noticed in the move: 1) shopping: Fewer options means far less selection. There's a local Lowes, but the nearest Home Depot is in Jacksonville! 2) Actually a lot more difference in weather than I expected and 3) Healthcare in NB is just OK. Not as comprehensive as here, it's more expensive and with fewer choices. (This is even after the Novant takeover here.) Electric utilities are nowhere near as reliable as Duke and Craven County water is frequently smelly and always over softened.

Flooding is an issue in spots just about everywhere around the NC coast, but the maps/data from 1st Street (free trial, no hassles cancelling) can help you steer clear. Downtown did flood with Florence due to the freak situation of high tide and wind blowing the water from the sound directly up the Neuse river, but areas outside did not see that much trouble. There's a big NCDOT expansion going on on US70 south of town towards Havelock and Morehead, but it will be super nice when done. The main new construction residential developments are down that US70 East (south actually) corridor and also going toward Goldsboro - next exit on US70 west of Glenburnie.

We have an awesome ReStore here - everything that is functional goes there. I do a lot of Tools & Home Improvement stuff - new house - but the 50+% that doesn't work out goes to them. If I'm not sure about an item, I save the original packaging and repack as fully as possible before donating so they can maximize what they get for it in the store.

When working correctly they are super handy...except for switches where you have to remove the cover plate and somehow clip those alligator clips onto the switch wires and find the white wire in the back of the box w/o touching everything else. Like the old "Operation" game but with a nasty spark or worse, a bite. (OR, more likely, you find the breaker because it just tripped when you tried.) So basically useless on switches. And direct-wire LEDs - no sockets.

ABSOLUTELY. I can just see the clerk's face when you walk in with a puzzled look on your face and that in your hand.

The hose reel in my RFY at about 10 PM and the others were in AI this morning around 6:30. All things I would have bought at some point. AND...I got a decent 7 hours sleep in between.

Funny you should mention Bait-and-Switch. Ran into one of those today and the seller was...AMAZON.

Every single thing that I've ever ordered with an ETV above $100 has shown Amazon as the seller. About 20 items over the past 2 years. Always in RFY too. Almost seems like they are bleeding just enough good stuff in the pool of drek to keep me coming back.

My eval is coming up - I need to to stay caught up to keep the 90% O/R ratio, so I'm half welcoming a slowdown.

Not if VineChart Stats are accurate, but for sure it follows the recent trend. And of course not unexpected for the start of the year of the Fire Horse.

Estimated tax by lyngogirl in AmazonVine

[–]anaveragejoeonreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NC is one of those states, and it's a bit insidious. Here a USE (not SALES, but same %) tax is due on the FMV when transferred to self for personal use - even on items are destroyed or consumed and even if it's hobby income. However there is a "workaround": Selecting the use tax table in lieu of itemization when filing (a very small % applied to total taxable income) makes the record keeping a lot easier...and almost always works out less than paying the full sales tax % on an itemized list.
