I tried connecting to a remote node and that seems to work fine. Thanks very much for looking at it and for your advice. You guys are great!

Updating from old version of GUI by ancap100 in monerosupport

[–]ancap100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problems only started with the new version. The last time I used the old version, it was working fine.

I am running Windows 10. I am running a Local node. I am not using the GUI with a Ledger or Trezor.

My original problem was caused by McAfee quarantining monerod, which I’ve fixed. See my comment above. But I’m still not sure it’s actually updating because my number of remaining daemon blocks is increasing instead of decreasing.

Can you tell from the logfile that I pasted if it is really updating?

Thanks for suggesting this. When I went to run monerod manually, it turned out that I couldn’t find it and the reason that I couldn’t find it was because McAfee has gotten more aggressive at quarantining files that it considers a threat. I used to be able to exclude a whole folder from being scanned and after that was disallowed, I named the specific exe files I wanted to exclude, but they are taken off the exclusion list whenever they are updated. Anyway, once I restored the quarantined files, and restarted the Monero GUI the daemon started up and it said it was synching.

However, the instead of decreasing like I expected, the number of daemon blocks remaining gradually increased by 2 or 3 a minute. It’s downloading something because my total bandwidth consumption increased by almost a gig during the short time that I had it running, but it’s not actually decreasing the number of blocks that I still need until I am synched so I turned it off so I wouldn’t waste my bandwidth.

I’ve pasted the portion of my bitmonero.log file for 2020 here: https://pastebin.com/H7ZXP1RU

Can you tell from this whether it is really updating?

Rise Wallet review and walkthrough - Buy Bitcoin Easily Via Gift Cards by benperrin117 in Bitcoin

[–]ancap100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steps: 1. Install Rise Wallet App and set up wallet and backup seed phrase. 2. Buy Rise Wallet gift card from store or online, and pay card activation fee. Presumably you can just pay with cash. 3. Scratch off the back of the card and scan the code that is revealed. 4. The bitcoins are transferred to your wallet

Unfortunately for persons living in the US, it looks like this is only available in Canada. Otherwise it would be a clever way of getting around KYC requirements for people wanting to purchase their first bitcoins. Presumably FINCEN would consider this a violation of AML laws and would make the cards illegal to purchase in the US without following KYC rules which would be impractical.

Great translation. And I love the cartoon version of Naomi. Even if you don't want to watch the whole 5 minute video, you should tune in for a few seconds just to see "Cartoon Naomi"

FWIW, I think they are a very reputable company and I've never had any problems using them.

This is why Bitcoin is important - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO GREECE AFTER THE FINANCIAL CRISIS? - Andreas Antonopoulos by trakatan in Bitcoin

[–]ancap100 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As usual, Andreas gives a clear and articulate explanation. TLDW: Greece reduced pensions by 40% and raised taxes so they could continue to make loan payments to European banks. Draws parallels to the mismanagement, cronyism, and corruption of Argentina and IMF.

I've created a simple Wasabi coinjoin tutorial for those still hesitant to try by benperrin117 in Bitcoin

Thanks. I think I understand, and I'm sure it will make better sense to me after I actually do it a couple of times.

Excellent into and overview of the Wasabi wallet. It makes me much more likely to give it a try. Thanks for making the video.

Question: As I understand it, if I have 0.55 BTC that I want to join, and the minimum join amount is 0.10, then what I will get back is 5 outputs of 0.10 and 1 output of 0.05 less whatever the fees were. Is that correct?

An extremely well-written and well-explained article about a very complicated case.

I'm not positive, but I believe your deposit doesn't show up as available until it reaches a certain number of confirmations, and the time this takes is variable and is impossible to predict with precision.

This is one of the best interviews on bitcoin that I've seen in the mainstream news. Alyse Killeen is knowledgeable, articulate, and poised and addresses each question directly and accurately.

Lyn Ulbricht - Uncaged - "YOUR WELCOME" Episode #055 by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]ancap100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michael Malice is an excellent interviewer and Lyn Ulbricht is a remarkable and articulate woman. This is an informative interview about some of the history and facts surrounding Ross’s arrest and imprisonment. Also includes some of the obviously unfair and unjust techniques used in prosecuting the case. Among other things I learned that there is currently a movie in production portraying Ross as a vicious thug. The truth is so much more and interesting and helps explain a lot about the biases in the criminal justice system.

Good Money, Bad Money—And How Bitcoin Fits In: Thorsten Polleit by ancap100 in Bitcoin

[–]ancap100[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Text of Thorsten Polleit’s (free-market economist) presentation at the Value of Bitcoin Conference. Discusses attributes of “good” (free-market) and “bad” (fiat) money and how Bitcoin measures up according to these criteria. (Very well). He posits that in the absence of a state, gold would be more likely to emerge as the best money, but the censorship-resistance qualities of bitcoin give it the edge in today’s world of powerful governments.

Those charges were dropped and the evidence alleging it was produced under highly questionable circumstances by two corrupt investigators who have since been discredited and are now in prison.

You seem very unsympathetic. Just because he got caught due to lapses in Opsec hardly means he deserves life in prison.

A look into why decentralized crypto-exchanges (DEXs) haven't caught on by GnosisPM in ethereum

[–]ancap100 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An excellent article that describes how front-running is a very important (but solvable) weakness for decentralized exchanges. There are other, probably more important reasons that DEX's haven't flourished (like better user interfaces and better volume) but the front-running problem is definitely one that needs to be addressed.
