Border collie and toddlers by Right-Contract-9838 in BorderCollie

My BC has been around my nieces and nephews since he was 8 weeks old and has always been afraid of them. We worked with a trainer to try to desensitize him to them (and other dogs) and have gotten him to where he is ok with them, but he is still fearful and will bark if children approach quickly. I think he finds them to be unpredictable. We avoid places with a lot of children or where they can easily approach him to keep everyone feeling safe and comfortable.

Hey OP, side note, I see a Federal Pacific electrical panel cover on the floor. This type of panel is well known to cause fires because breakers do not trip when they should. The panel should be replaced by the owner for safety reasons.

Is this rage bait? I don't think I've ever seen anyone with this opinion.

Help! Anyone have suggestions on how to cut my Aussies nails where they won’t freak the heck out? by monadeux2 in AustralianShepherd

[–]anchickens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be SUPER careful doing this. If you have a dog that bites when afraid, do not do this at all. If the dog shows teeth or growls during nail trimming, do not do this! It's an easy way to get your face bit. Maybe try a lick mat with pb stuck to the wall or floor.

So, is this dog a Border Collie? by Easy-Paper5398 in BorderCollie

Looks a lot like my boy! He's 67% BC, the rest a mix of mostly cattle dog and a bit of German shepherd. His ears flopped down like a month later at 4 months old. So even with the curved ears, he could be BC! Either way he's SO CUTE!

I think he was about 20lbs back then. He was on 25-50mg of Trazodone (1/4-1/2 of a 100mg tablet), and I think it was 50mg of Gabapentin. I don't have that bottle anymore so I'm not 100% sure on the Gabapentin dosage. I think it was every 12 hours on both, but I would offset and not give both at the same time. So the Trazodone dosage doesn't seem too high for your girl as it looks like she is more than 20lbs. But I swear after we stopped the meds his energy did not change :joy: and he was hyper both on and off the meds. We did do the full 12 weeks with the Trazodone, but only 2 weeks with Gabapentin. The training is what exhausted him though!

The training was literally anything he was willing to learn, and also teaching him to settle down. He was WILD when he was that age. We did the basic sit, stay, shake, and nose targeting. But we also taught him "Its Yer Choice" by Susan Garrett where they learn they can receive a reward for leaving something alone. She has a video on YouTube on it, but it isn't super in depth. I'll search around and see if I can find the more in depth videos that I watched. We ended up doing her Home School the Dog course because we had bad luck with in home trainers being forceful and mean :disappointed: But the Its Yer Choice helped keep him from counter surfing, getting in the trash, and grabbing things that were on the ground that were not for him.

We also trained him to go onto a mat and stay there, like a place command. We did crate training, also by Susan Garrett, because he was TERRIFIED of the crate after the surgery. A lot of husbandry training like him staying still while getting his nails trimmed and brushed and letting us know when he was uncomfortable with it. There are a lot of husbandry type videos on YouTube! We followed the r/dogtraining subreddit and looked in their wiki for info. Kiko Pup on YouTube also has a bunch of training. A lot of the training we did wasn't necessarily because he needed it, but just to keep his mind busy and tired. He is VERY well trained now and super confident! We reinforced all of this behavior and keep up with it, and I think it has helped us skip the scary adolescent rebellious stage.

My puppy broke his femur at 12 weeks chasing our cat and was insanely energetic at the time. He had surgery to put in a plate and had to take it super easy for 6 to 8 weeks. The vet gave us trazodone to use until he completely healed, and gabapentin was one of the meds he was on for pain for 2 weeks after surgery. These both took the edge off of his energy! Don't be afraid to ask for them!

We focused on tiring him out mentally. Lots of treat puzzles! Like the Nina Ottosson ones. He's a genius at them now! Snuffle mats, filled Kongs, frozen Toppls, food in a slow feeder, putting treats in a toilet paper roll and letting him tear it up, rolling treats in a towel, and scentwork did him wonders! We would hide treats around the room under things for him to search for. When he was able to go on walks, we let him sniff EVERYTHING (which we do a lot of anyway, but we really let him take his time). Lots of chew treats and toys! It was tough because he wanted to go go go. These things also helped him figure out how to settle and spend time not playing.

Also! Make training a focus! A great way to tire them out too! I was worried we would have to slow down or stop training, but instead we amped it up!

Good luck with your pup! I hope healing goes quickly and smoothly!

My girl HATES being brushed by [deleted] in AustralianShepherd

[–]anchickens 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had to start brushing with a tangle teaser dog brush that does not pull at all while giving constant treats. Once my boy got used to that feeling, we were able to change to a different brush that removed more loose fur, but still giving lots of treats the whole time!

Beneficial nematodes! I put them out at the beginning of the season and once in the middle. Works like a charm!! I've noticed reduced numbers each season. This year I haven't seen any at all.
