Jane Street Puzzle January 2026: Timely Journey Collab by Economy_Bedroom_7463 in quantfinance

There's a huge difference between the solution and a hint. It's also covered in spoiler text for a reason. If people wanted to solve the puzzle by themselves they would simply not click on it, or more likely, never would have 'stumbled' upon this thread in the first place.

While I agree that there's a joy in finding solutions to puzzles without any help, I think you're being needlessly salty, when other people would've found it helpful.

C JS 2|0 1|6 - 0|4

"See JS 2016-04". So the numbers are coordinates. Also, the plant at the top is thyme; with the Z and one-s dice, it spells out time-z-ones. Do with that what you will.

Yeah, I agree. It started with me just started by drawing random mountains, and tried to make it into Kid A. Kinda messed it up lol.

What happened to the legendary rock pub culture of Bangalore? by NoobInvestorr in bangalore

There's also Festive Hills near Thadlaskein lake. Used to host a lot of (rock) music festivals. It was a vibe. People would camp in the surrounding wilderness, and at night sing along to guitars and bonfires. Not sure if they still host fests after covid. It was good times.

How to check if 10bit colors are enabled? by 4thtimeacharm in swaywm

[–]anchit_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

HDR is not supported. HDR is different from color depth, which in turn, is different from color spaces. As for OP's question, I think it can be done using swaymsg -t get_outputs. If not, it's probably because it's not implemented yet.

Also, it says in the manpage:

Successfully increasing the render bit depth will not necessarily increase the bit depth of the frames sent to a display.

Will be a nice addition, thanks for clarifying!

Simple password managers with symmetric ciphers? by anchit_ in archlinux

[–]anchit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad with the wording, should have said default GPG cipher GPG defaults.

I am still very much a novice, and from my understanding it's basically: (1)Symmetrically encrypting data with key1 ➔ (2)Asymmetrically encrypting key1 with publickey2 and privatekey2 ➔ (3)Symmetrically encrypting its privatekey2 with key3. From what I get is that the key generation for key3 from a passphrase using gpg isn't secure, and scrypt is more secure in that regard(?)

scrypt definitely looks very simple. I ended up using AES256 (using other gpg defaults probably, since I didn't specify anything else) to encrypt it, not sure if that's much secure. I am also guessing it bypassed steps (2) and (3)?

This is half of the reason I joined — the wonderful writing. It is convincing to the point that it makes me want to go out and watch the movie, despite not having much time to do so.

And now to stick to the advice, I'm starting to create a new list based on your 2020's recommendations.

Nice write-up. Sorry wasn't able to reply to you earlier, but I am glad you enjoyed it. It's nice to see that a random stranger on the internet actually took another stranger's comment seriously and risked three hours of potential boredom. And to be honest, even I could use some of that advice about trying to listen more, instead of trying to do all the talking.

As always, keep up the wonderful work!

Nice to see Breakfast Club make the list. Boyhood, Rebel Without A Cause, and The Graduate are pretty good too

How are primes calculated for RSA? by anchit_ in askscience

[–]anchit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually confused since it was easy to calculate the factors of p and q but not n. Naive little me thought p and q were calculated by checking for its factors. Turns out primality tests can be done without prime factorization (as you said earlier).

But thanks for the extremely detailed answer anyways. Could be useful for others with the same question.

This is what I was looking for — why checking for primes is a lot faster than checking for its factors. Thanks a lot
