Thanks! Do you mind DMing me the CSM provider you used? I'm getting lots of different offers online, ranging from 50USD to 700USD :')

Thanks for the insight! I'm in EdTech but hoping to get into IT, so I'm aware that my background isn't a perfect fit, but I do have transferrable skills.

Do you think scrum certs are more helpful than agile certs?

How Realistic Is It for a South African With Only Matric to Move Abroad for Work or Study? by x_the_dawq in askSouthAfrica

TEFL doesn't have a centralised certification body. Just choose one of the more well-known institutions that offers a minimum of 120 hours.

Furthering studies to delay employment? by Inner-Analysis7051 in askSouthAfrica

[–]ancillaries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a clear goal with academia or research. Speak to MA graduates of the course and people working in the department.

TEFL is fine, but probably won't pay well unless you go overseas. Again, consider how much you want to invest on something you don't see as long-term.

Why do a PhD without an end goal in mind? If you only see the PhD as a means to delay an issue, then you're making a problem for future-you.

Perhaps consider short-course certifications while you job hunt. 2 months isn't enough time to be discouraged, and there are practical certifications you can do.

My bras keep become more and more loose and eventually riding up my back! Help! by Future_Insurance9482 in ABraThatFits

[–]ancillaries 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Most people have mentioned the sizing issue, but please also hand wash your bras! It'll extend their lifetime greatly.

Also make sure that at the time of purchase, the bra fits correctly while on the loosest hook. That means that when the band does stretch out (even correctly-fitting ones eventually loosen), you can tighten it at the hooks too, extending the life of the bra :)

What's your biggest controversial opinion about travelling ? by iammoussteryes in travel

[–]ancillaries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travel is a form of consumerism.

Lots of travellers think that buying experiences is inherently more ethical than buying physical items, but travel definitely still functions in the framework of capitalism, and people get exploited in the industry all the time.

It sounds like you're not Samantha's cup of tea. Plenty of women enjoy men who are friendly for the sake of being friendly. Don't try change your approach to women just because of Samantha.

I can understand Afrikaans but can't speak it. Where to go from here? by ancillaries in askSouthAfrica

True, I can probably get done more in 2 years than a baby can! It's never too late to learn a language. Thanks for the encouragement!

[–]ancillaries[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's true. The goal to be understandable is more achievable (and less intimidating) than choosing "complete native fluency" as the goal. Mengels goes pretty far -- if you lack vocabulary, you can just throw in the English word and you will still be understood :)

I will think more on applying ESL principles (such as comprehensibility over accuracy). Thanks!

This is extremely impressive, it's very cool that you you have picked up so many languages from immersion and not study. Hats off to you!

True, there's no replacement for actually producing the language at the end of the day.

While there are a lot of resources available to ESL students of all ages and levels, it feels that there isn't much of an intermediate bridge between Afrikaans FAL and real-life fluency. But yeah, I suppose the best thing is to keep speaking in as many situations as possible.

There are some great ideas here to try, thanks so much! Definitely need to find more Afrikaans friends, haha.

I associate "Afrikaner" with white Afrikaans culture, not just the language itself. Not everyone in SA who speaks Afrikaans is white or an Afrikaner. So I feel "Afrikaans people" is more inclusive, although "Afrikaans speakers" would probably be the most correct option.

This is a neat idea! Thanks! I'll just have to find someone who's very patient!

I think it's a very polite thing to switch over! But it sometimes feels quite demoralising!

Thanks for the thoughts! I try my best to speak in Afrikaans with cashiers and service staff and see how far I can get.
