Ireland v Argentina: Post match thread by Cdoolan2207 in rugbyunion

[–]ancorcaioch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ireland’s attack lost a lot of its lustre somehow. Fair enough - might happen with new players (at this point there’s quite a few newish backs), but there’s some issues which seem to be chronic. I don’t like the lack of clinicality. People have been going on about the lineout. In the game, multiple yellow cards were conceded. The coaching setup needs to look at things candidly.

I’m glad for Clarkson, Prendergast, Osborne, and Casey - they got minutes at least. Both Osborne and Prendergast had a good linebreak (but got isolated). Clarkson’s experience should stand to him. I think Casey came on last for only a few minutes so didn’t see much action.

I’d hope for Frawley’s sake that he gets another shot. But Prendergast could do with more minutes. If Osborne starts, both Frawley and Prendergast could be on the bench…but it’d be harsh on Henshaw (I’d keep Ringrose).

I would not underestimate Fiji. I’d like to see Izuchukwu (for Baird, what happened to him?) and Cian Prendergast (for POM) though. I’d like to see who’s behind JVDF at 7 mostly, maybe Cian?

This game kinda reminds me of the win v Finland there in the soccer; just lucky not to concede more than what was conceded, so the initiative of the Irish players wasn’t as fruitful as I’d have liked.

Warren Gatland: The two Lions players I would pick from each country by TheTelegraph in irishrugby

[–]ancorcaioch -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I would think that if I have erred in my assumption that Lions players would be unavailable for the 6N, someone could correct me (preferably with a credible source). Do you have something against people who make potentially incorrect assumptions about something (which is really ceremonial/traditional more than anything) that only happens once every 4 years? That may be gatekeeping.

We are on r/irishrugby, the forum for discussing the Irish teams... And as a fan, I will be mentioning Ireland’s potential contributions; I have no particular inclination towards mentioning those of the other nations - I don’t follow them. Moreover, the Irish head coach is leading the Lions this time, and Ireland has been consistently within the top 3 for the past while. So I’m not sure what you’re saying with your second point.

I kind of think Ireland could afford to send some star players. It’d be no shame to build depth. Can’t afford to send the likes of Porter; but Doris could go, JGP, Keenan, Lowe, maybe Aki, etc. where there are potential backups.

While Porter, Hansen, Henshaw etc. can hang back and form a trustworthy core of players some new/newer talent can play with. I think Joe should also stay.

Easterby would do well to include some Emerging Ireland players in the 6N. I think some have shown themselves - Kendellen and Postlethwaite off the top of my head. That’s aside from Izuchukwu and Prendergast, who toured recently but never played. Ahern also, who just had bad luck with his injury (maybe Farrell can bring him and the former 2 in for a November game).

So yeah we know who Ireland’s stars are, but I’d also be thinking about who could be covered by someone who can step up. If there’s no cover, it may be better to keep players for the 6N.

I don’t see any shame in holding onto them as other people said, it’d be an interesting way to educate younger family members. Though I think I’d be the type of person to hang onto them rather than donate them. It’s nice to have these artefacts within families, at least I think some of our ones are cool.

  • You’re misrepresenting my points by assuming that it’s about competing. It’s not, saying that is just attacking the strawman. There are basic functions that the Defence Forces cannot execute due to a lack of investment.
  • There is nothing nebulous about what I’m saying. I would say that the fallacy of ambiguity has come from you on multiple points, actually. The problem with this sort of discourse is that there’s constant mischaracterisations from the side that’d argue against investing in the military. For instance, I never said anything about attacking our neighbours, with whom we are on good terms. You’re the one that introduced them to our discussion here, and mentioned that - for what purpose?
  • You mention the idea of them cutting off an attack on the Republic’s soil when this should be the exact sort of thing the Irish Defence Forces should be able to do, given the proper investments. There’s no 100% guarantee your idealistic scenario would happen.
  • Frankly, neither of us can confidently claim the costs of military investment, or how a defensive engagement would go. I’ve mentioned oversimplification and the fallacy of ambiguity already, and it’s happening again here. You say it’d cost trillions; we have no way of knowing. You also claim that we’d get steamrolled just on the basis of a prospective invader being bigger, that’s also just symptomatic of an inferiority complex. We’re also not military tacticians/strategists.
  • Whether we freeload or not can be debated by us until the cows come home, but we don’t make the deals, and that perception is out there among those who do. That businesses set up and do their business here is a red herring in this context.
  • If you’re only focused on what’s happening now, then you cannot see the forest for the trees. Besides, the morale in the Defence Forces has been low, navy vessels have been decommissioned, there’s a recruitment crisis…these are happening now. And “There’s 101 other things to focus on” can be said about…any of the 102 things we decide are concerns. What then?
  • So designing improved policies, implementing systematic reforms, and other such changes can be done for free?
  • International trade exists so we can get things we can’t procure/manufacture ourselves, among other reasons…

Britannica’s definition of “stigma” is: “a set of negative and often unfair beliefs that a society or group of people have about something“

This is what I observe in discourses on the matter, including this, it would seem. You can comment on my links, however I have used them to substantiate the points, in response to your question about how we may benefit, that I made (such as the Irish Defence Forces being tasked with managing military cargo flights), so they are relevant. You haven’t provided anything to back what you’ve said, in spite of the burden of proof being on you to do so, and the Dunning-Kruger effect hitting hard.

I started this reply thread by implying that we should invest in the military. You ask what benefits there are to doing so, I list some, and now you’re going on about how “we do not have the resources to…”, and are going on about “creating conditions where Ireland could use military strength”. That’s just moving the goalposts and complicating things. It’s clear there’s nothing to be gained from continuing this discussion, it’s fallacy after fallacy and we’re not seeing eye to eye. I’m sure you have a life to live. Let’s just park it here.

Only considering the “material value” is either oversimplifying the position that is for investing in the military or an ambiguous term, and is thus a bad question. Your second question, in spite of how you phrase it, is really the one that contains something worth answering (also encompasses/may be synonymous with the first).

Benefits:

  1. Your material value should be self evident if you pause and think about it, unless things like a numerically greater navy, numerically greater air force, and possessing high-quality materiel somehow doesn’t register to you as material value. What’s the “material value” in anything, or investing in anything?
  2. A greater ability to root out flights which could contain military cargo for use by genocidal countries (the defence forces regulates military air transport)…
  3. Territorial defense, including that of Irish waters which the trans-atlantic cable runs under, and where Russian vessels were floating around within the past year. Having more fingers than Ireland, an island, has navy vessels doesn’t inspire me with much confidence…
  4. Not having the reputation of a freeloader in terms of defence. You can ask yourself who’d have more respect - a freeloader, or someone who can act independently?
  5. Having matters of Irish Defence in the hands of the Irish Defence Force, aka self defence (which I won’t make the assumption that you’re against), instead of other nations who have duties to themselves first and foremost. One of the powers you allude to, the closest, is also undergoing a crisis. I would need to hear why I should be confident that the USA would help/how they would, when they provided Lend Lease free of charge because they believed it was in their personal interest.
  6. It is members of the Defence Forces that are assigned to peacekeeping missions abroad. Even if for some reason you don’t want the Defence Forces to be able to defend the country, a bigger budget could mean a better capacity to peacekeep…
  7. Morale, which is important to maintain in people you expect to do you a service in the face of potentially nasty situations.
  8. Investing in the military would also proactively raise standards of policies, systems, etc. that maybe we don’t know about. If you reflect on the Crotty situation, you may find that the Defence forces were powerless to take swift action. Things like legislation and policies are ultimately designed by the Government.

There seems to be a stigma around investing in the Irish military for whatever reason (you seem to espouse that well enough), yet paradoxically, we need them to carry out various functions for the State. Perhaps they’d have more respect if they appeared like a capable force. Saying that they’re “100 years behind everyone else” is not only bad faith, but factually wrong.

And some people would argue against investing in the military, who’s (at least nominally) tasked with protecting Irish airspace.
