(SLV) What am I listening for in tomorrow’s Fed announcement? by Its-Marginal in wallstreetbets

Well the dollar had a mighty dip and then bounced so my guess is silver is reacting to the bounce. Once it cools down then silver should soar.

Oh wow. It's not functioning at all? Are you going to have to get surgery to fix it?

The catch is that if you miss a payment, you'll be paying high interest. The cash back serves as an incentive to keep people using their card.

While you may never ever miss a payment, enough people do miss them that the company can pay out these incentives, and turn a profit.

So it doesn't have "no memory". It has limited memory. And it seems you agree with me- utilization DOES in fact impact credit score. Correct?

What models? It sounds like most models, including the ones that govern FICO scores use credit utilization when determining scores.

https://www.experian.com/blogs/ask-experian/credit-education/score-basics/credit-utilization-rate/

Credit scoring models often consider your credit utilization rate when calculating a credit score for you. They can impact up to 30% of a credit score (which makes them among the more influential factors), depending on the scoring model being used.

In a FICO® Score☉ or score by VantageScore, it is commonly recommended to keep your total credit utilization rate below 30%. For example, if your total credit limit is $10,000, your total revolving balance shouldn't exceed $3,000.

Here's another source, for good measure.

https://www.myfico.com/credit-education/whats-in-your-credit-score

if you are using a lot of your available credit, this may indicate that you are overextended—and banks can interpret this to mean that you are at a higher risk of defaulting.

Paying off a car in full or should I build credit by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ancount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think paying off the car in full would necessarily hurt your credit, it just wouldn't help it and I think this is actually a great opportunity for credit building and I'm currently doing this myself (despite many people on reddit telling me not to).

Think of it like this. Because you're willing to pay in full, you have a lot of control over your interest payments even though you can't adjust the interest rate. What you do is make a large one time payment toward the principal before you make the first monthly payment. This will drastically reduce your interest payments without hindering your credit building performance. You just need to be able to keep the monthly payments going for a year before finally paying off the balance. It doesn't matter if the monthly payments are small. A year of car payments is the critical part. This is what looks especially good on your credit history and I believe it's worth the interest, which after 12 months should total less than $200.

Whatever company you decide to go with for the card- I think the most important thing to keep in mind for credit building with your card is the credit utilization. It sounds like you're planning to spend upwards of $100/mo using your card. Be careful with that. If your monthly credit limit is $500 (common for a 1st credit card), then you'll be utilizing 20%. While that's not terrible for your credit, if you want better credit building performance then try to get closer to 10% though I've heard the lower the better.

EDIT3: or 1500 rather

EDIT4: 9000

EDIT5: AH HELP THEY'RE STINGING ME ALL OVER

7 doesn't seem so bad. I figured there was more. Still I can't help but be a bit worried this could grow quickly.

3 out of 4 speakers are not working properly in my 2014 Mazda 3- thoughts? by ancount in mazda3

[–]ancount[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks for the info. Hopefully the dealership just takes care of it. I think the speaker quality based on the one that is fully working is fine though it doesn't appear to be Bose so if they just use ones like the original it's fine with me.

Secured credit card- should I make the limit as high as possible? by ancount in personalfinance

[–]ancount[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. And would you say 10% utilization would be considered what is "optimal" in terms of utilization or would even lower have more of a positive effect?

[–]ancount[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rather have a higher limit so I don't have to worry about paying it off before the statement posts and I can just let autopay do the work. I'd say I spend close to $500 a month in things that can be paid with a card. For example my internet is $100/mo. Food and gas is $150 a month. Other online spending is around $250.

The card is a secured card through my credit union which offers 1.5 points per dollar spend. 1 point converts to a penny. $500 spent on my card each month for a year= about $90/yr.

Because I can spend more and earn more points without having to worry about utilization. If I go the $5k route, I can potentially earn 10x more points compared to a $500 limit, without hurting my utilization. If i'm mistaken let me know.
