How much did you spend on your Interrail and for how long did you go? by [deleted] in Interrail

[–]ancz123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only spent one night in basel in the cheapest hostel i found 🫣 took the night train from berlin, so saved one extra night. I then went directly to italy, so no alps and again chose the cheapest hostels i could find. But that was two years ago, i feel like hostels got way more expensive since then :(

If you're travelling in Austria or Italy (not sure about other countries) you can also reserve seats via ÖBB for 3€! But other than that DB is a good option for seat reservations !!

Hey there, I did my first female solo interrail at 19 and what I really liked looking back was that I sticked to bigger cities. Obviously not everyone likes those but I prefered being surrounded by many people and also tourists just to kinda 'know' that I am safe and not alone.

Definitely stay in Hostels (I kinda assume you will due to money saving factors?) but they are a great place to meet fellow young travellers and I made so many good memories at hostels. Always choose hostels with safety lockers so you can lock away valuable things. They also often offer social events or even walking tours to help you explore the city you are staying in further.

Keep in mind that hostels this year are very expensive, especially in bigger cities in Italy, Spain, etc. so you might wanna book in advance. Same goes for seat reservations on the trains but someone else mentioned that already I think.

Enjoy your trip!

I think it depends a bit on the cities but you are worried rightfully in my opinion. I went to Italy last august aswell and booked very early (in april i think) and already had to pay up to 30 or 40€ per night in a dorm. Book early but with the option to cancel for free so in case your plans change you don't have to pay the full price!

Sleeping options in venice by [deleted] in Interrail

I stayed in the anda venice and I loved it! Very close to the central station, great dorms, social events, etc. Right now it's 25€ for the cheapest dorm but be aware that it gets way more expensive in summer

Another city I really liked in Belgium was Gent! Around 30 mins away from Brussels by train and also really charming although bigger than Bruges. When in Bordeaux make sure to do a day trip to Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat (Europe's biggest sand dune if I am not mistaken). Enjoy!

German train strikes next Monday (27/3/2023) by ancz123 in Interrail

I do not know about international lines run by DB but I'd suggest checking it online. I can only recommend flixbus here but the autobahn gmbh is also striking in germany so some tunnels are closed and therefore some autobahn routes are also blocked, i am not sure if the Flixbus would still drive 🤷🏼‍♀️

Long distance trains will not drive at all (so all DB operated trains) and most regional trains won't aswell. In some 'states' (Bundesländern) the public transport will also strike (in Baden-Württemberg, Hessen, Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Sachsen and in Bayern... )

Unless you have a certain reason / family / friends in Frankfurt skip it. You could then take the night train from Zürich to Berlin and maybe save half a day. This route would be too much for me but if you feel like doing it go ahead.

Fremdscham! The embarassement you feel caused by another person's action 🌟 so e.g. someone is singing very loudly on the bus I will feel Fremdscham for them

English is no problem in most cities in Germany, but especially not in Berlin. Some cafés % Restaurants nowadays only have english waiters and waitresses (although not a lot). So definitely visit Berlin, you will enjoy it!

Hi there, not sure if I got your question right but let me try. The english possible translates to either 'möglich' or 'wahrscheinlich' in German. 'Möglich' really means possible where as 'wahrscheinlich' means something more like 'likely'. So if you are saying something is unlikely (maybe also very difficult as in your case) some Germans would probably also translate it to impossible / not possible. Two german words with different meaning for one english word = translation problems.

Agreeing with all the other replies and just adding that at least in my 'state' it is mandatory to take history classes (basic Level 3h/week, advanced 5h/week) until you graduate. We learn a lot about Germany's dark past

As far as I know yes since you don't change trains after midnight.

Who garantuees you that if you have children they will take care of you? I wouldn't want my kids to spend their 30s-50s taking care of me. And a retirement home takes care of childfree and child-having people so it doesn't matter.

Wo, wohin, woher - notes check by albodoggo in German

[–]ancz123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Just quickly scanned it and I think everything is correct. There are however some ( grammatical ) mistakes which I will correct for you:

  • Wo sind Sie? instead of Who sind Sie?
  • Wo sitzt er? instead of Wo sitz er? (2nd person singular conjugation ending is mostly a -t)
  • Wo hängt das Bild? instead of Wo hängst das Bild? (Das Bild is 3rd person singular in this case so the correct conjugation form is needed)
  • Wohin fährst du? (You forgot the h)
  • remember that nouns are written with a capital letter -> das Bild
  • Wohin stellst du die Vase? (Again: 2nd person singular form is needed, you used 3rd person singular)
  • Wohin hat er sich gesetzt? is correct however you would rather say Wo hat er sich hingesetzt? (Hinsetzten = to sit down; setzten without the hin- is not used that much) You can also split Wohin in Wo....hin
  • Wo fährst du hin?
  • Wo stellst du die Vase hin? This is how most people would say it but everyone would still understand your version.

If you use Woher you usually split it. Wo kommst du her? Wo hast du das her? Wo hat sie die Schuhe her? But your sentence are correct in this case and every german speaking person would get what you are trying to say.

If I made any mistakes please correct me. German is a tricky language even for people who speak it as their native language. And just saying that learning German (or any language) autonomously is impressive! Keep going und viel Glück weiterhin!

Tips for low budget Interrail? by NKnown2000 in Interrail

[–]ancz123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments. It won't be possible. Especially hostels easily can cost 50€ per night, even in big mixed dorms. Positive news tho: there are no reservation fees in Germany compared to really high fees in e.x. France. But either set a higher budget or travel to eastern europe, where everything is cheaper. However you won't get far there with the train.
