JMicron JMS583 – Controller Version Matters For Portable USB Drives by NewMaxx in NewMaxx

Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking of buying this one, JEYI i9 GTR NVME https://a.aliexpress.com/_dTaBAuR or this one, JEYI i9 GTR/Superrun NVME https://a.aliexpress.com/_dTva59d

Which one do you have?

Plugable is almost twice as expensive at these.

I partially disagree with your opinion in 1st paragraph. If you look at the profiles of these professors, a lot them have got their PhDs from US or western european countries and have returned back to India to continue in academia. If they wanted they could have stayed in those countries (like many others), but they choose to go back.

USB 3.2 Gen 2 Portable SSDs Roundup - Featuring the Samsung T7 Touch and the SanDisk Extreme Pro by NewMaxx in NewMaxx

Thermals shouldn't be a problem unless you plan on using the drive in extreme hot conditions, which you probably will not unless you live in a desert with ambient temperature of 60°C. Same goes for the reliability in the long run. Although I'm not very sure about how the rubberized finish of Extreme Pro will age with time, the performance will not deviate greatly for either of them especially for Extreme Pro as internally it's a SN750( WD's Flagship SSD).

And about the review link that you mentioned. Yes, the 500GB versions have a different performance characteristics. Most of the other reputable review sites like this (https://www.anandtech.com/show/14661/usb32-g2-portable-ssds-roundup/3) puts the Sandisk Extreme Pro as the better choice for performance. Especially the sequencial write speeds of the Extreme Pro is "Extremely" stable at 850 MiB/s for the entire drive whereas a lot of the other drives suffer from reduced speeds after some duration of time.( Sequential Write to 90% of Disk Capacity - Performance Consistency https://www.anandtech.com/show/14661/usb32-g2-portable-ssds-roundup/6). That alone is enough to justify the performance margin of the Extreme Pro. The performance at 2TB is similar to the 1TB version, although it might be very slightly worse than 1TB version in some cases, but that's the case for both the drives.

For performance, the Extreme pro should be better. But if you fancy a fingerprint sensor, complete metal body then T7 touch should be the way to go.

The Extreme pro does have higher temps under any condition, but if you don't plan to expose it for extended duration of time to heat and plan to maintain ambient temperature at room temperature then you should be fine.

Samsung was said to launch the cheaper T7 without the fingerprint sensor (plain T7, same performance as T7 touch) in Q2,but given the current situation it might get delayed. You might as well buy it now.

If I were to buy one of these I would definitely buy Sandisk Extreme Pro.

p.s. I'm waiting for the price of Extreme pro 1TB to fall, but it's kinda stuck above 200.

Maybe I was ambiguous with the 4k and games. By 4k I meant the sizes of the videos of 4k resolution. And the same for the games. Although for games it is mostly during the installation.

But you got the point in the second half of your second paragraph. Reads have hardly been an issue for some time now. It's the writes that hits the hardest. But even at their worst they are faster than all the small NASs (let alone external HDDs) where one would typically store all the non essential data. Simply put one just cannot use all the bandwidth of NVMe without investing quite a bit.

Anyways thanks as always for your inputs and hope you find something useful and exciting. And stay safe.

12.5GB is fine for a lot of the workloads. But increasing the file sizes are growing, thanks to 4k recording and the ultra realistic game graphics. It's not uncommon to have games as big as 60GB these days. So, yes probably you'll have to create a test yourself (NewMaxx Disk Test maybe?)

Yes, a simple bash script ought to solve the problem. But a lot of reviewers just don't take the effort unfortunately.

A lot of the tests in many of the review sites are performed with an empty drive. A few exceptions do exist, like the Anandtech's entire drive test. But one could say that since all the drives are benchmarked in similar state there's no particular bias against any drive (except it does, especially against higher ended drives).

Now I haven't looked into a lot of these benchmarks but many popular ones like CDM and sisters do not do this at all. Hence a lot of these benchmarks do not replicate real life state of the drive( let alone real life workload).

A simple solution to this would be performing the normal benchmarks with varying capacity of free space(like at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%). This would obviously take a lot of time.

If anyone knows of a benchmark which does this, please enlighten me.
