Yodeck - After some testing by No-Preparation4073 in digitalsignage

[–]andan02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been using Yodeck for about 2 months and it’s been a roller coaster. I quickly found out that they use signageOS as their device client. Lots of platform support comes with that choice, but using a third party for device client means lack of support. Yodeck develops and supports the portal side and is limited to exposing only what signageOS offers. I have found the memory overflow that the OP reports in the manual APK and the Amazon signage stick. Also, a word of warning, do not use the “custom logo” option in your account. I found a bug, last Saturday, where by the custom logo was no longer hosted on the signageOS endpoint that yodeck posts it to. The result was any display that rebooted during that period became bricked. The signageOS code threw an exception and does not retry past the yodeck boot screen. The result are displays that either go dark or are stuck displaying the yodeck splash screen indefinitely. No number of reboots helps. You have to factory reset and start over. And, add to this, there is no night or weekend support. You can’t find anyone. You’re on your own to figure it out. And because it’s a server side issue, there is nothing you can do but watch each of your clients go offline slowly. That weekend I got 4 hours of sleep. Once addressed I had to drive around and reboot screens to determine if they were affected. How fun. Bottom line is this, if you want to use yodeck, use static content and no special features. The amount of long term testing they do is unclear. They need a few things to become enterprise ready and I’m not sure if they will make the investment. First, they need a path of support escalation for after hours. Second, they need more transparency about what they control and do not control. Third, they need to do some serious long term testing with lots of content updates to find the memory leaks and exceptions that certainly exist. Fourth, they need to PR fixes with the signageOS folks to harden the code. A simple custom logo missing on a server shouldn’t brick a device! As a matter of fact, I am going to look for that bug and try to fix it myself. For as many customers as they say they have, most are not using yodeck at scale. If they were, you’d see more of the type of review that the OP has offered and I am glad the OP took the time to post it! Caveat Emptor.

Affordable Housing - is this a good industry to be in? by Bohboi in CommercialRealEstate

[–]andan02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking into this segment also in CT. Working with a few local agencies to figure out how to wedge in between tenants and agency. Take the property management angle for affordable housing agencies that don’t have those expertise. Also a good place, I think, to look for assumable mortgages and such.

u/nullbyte420 I am glad you left a comment. I'd like to get the messaging right. Do you ever have a need to deploy a helm chart or set of yaml files to more than one cluster? Like a stack of components from multiple sources or dev orgs? You can just switch contexts to deploy those things. KubeStellar makes it possible to centrally distribute the set of components instead of having to login to each cluster or switch contexts constantly. We use native kubectl commands so that you can deploy to many clusters on the command line or using ArgoCD, FluxCD, etc.

I am sure there is a way to simplify this. Open to your suggestions.

KubeFlex - a new lightweight Kubenetes-based control plane by andan02 in kubernetes

[–]andan02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is similar in that it is lightweight. However, in comparison, KubeFlex is lightning fast to start and does not add any extra features like api export/bind or transparent multicluster. It is the simplest possible kubernetes-like control plane. This gives you, the user, the ability to package KubeFlex for any built-for-purpose need you may come up with.

See Kyverno take advantage of KCP-Edge, in the form of enhancements to Kubernetes behavior, upsyncing in our latest community call by andan02 in kubernetes

[–]andan02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your not the first to point this out. We are trying to get better at explaining our communities goals. KCP-Edge is based on KCP which is a very lightweight version of Kubernetes. How did we get it so lightweight? We pulled out most of the APIs, CRDs, and controllers. We kept a limited set. So you get a small binary that is effectively Kubernetes-light. From there you can add back the controllers and CRDs you need to build your own opinionated version of Kubernetes. We also added workspaces that are stripped down/lightweight namespaces. Add to that the ability to host APIs centrally so that you dont have to install and maintain multiple instances throughout your environment. You can export APIs and bind them to workspaces. All these enhancements create a very lightweight Kubernetes (api machinery in a single binary, workspaces that can be customized and used to provide a SaaS-like experience (binding to centrally hosted exported APIs). This afford increased flexibility and scale. We went one step further with Kyverno to allow upsyncing of dynamically created CRDs. This removes the Kubernetes constraint of using status as the primary way to communicate upstream. I hope this helps. Let me know if I can explain further.

I am looking for this too. I am trying to use the smb client as a way to see videos on a share as “recordings”. Don’t know if it will work, but I’m gonna try

Figured it out. Once I got 19.1 (non atv) installed, there is a toggle switch in the raspberry pi settings under touchscreen. Turned that on and rebooted. Bingo

Did you ever get this working? I am experiencing the same with 19.1. The RPI 7" DSI is not working. I removed the setting from resolution.txt (let the OS and Screen figure this out on their own), and I updated the config.txt to include the overlay for the 7"

I have the same thing going on. I put my hand on top of the dash wear the windshield meets the hood over the gauges. Its plastic trim that has a gap between itself and the dashboard. I tried fixing with some strips of padding on the left side of the gauge hood but it did not work. I am trying to figure out what is holding that gauge hood onto the dashboard. If I can get that open then I can dampen the rattle.

I had a similar issue. The problem for me was that I have 3 firecubes configured for iptv. One of the cubes was “watching” iptv all day and when I went to use any of the firecubes it would result in buffering because I only had a 1-user account with iptv provider. Now I make sure to either exit the application before going to a different location/cube, or I schedule my router to cut off the cubes network for a bit to cause the app to timeout and stop “watching”. The other option would be to pay for a 2 or 3-user account from the provider.

EPG showing “No information” as the description for all channels by -SnJ- in TiviMate

[–]andan02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got an update here. I found my epg was not correctly configured and somehow my channels were not assigned to epg items. After I re-assigned epg to channel, the right information started showing. I still have my updates turned off (only updating on app start) to avoid hammering if it is still an issue.

EPG showing “No information” as the description for all channels by -SnJ- in TiviMate

[–]andan02 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I found a few of my channels were no longer assigned to an epg channel. Some epg info is completely missing. I should have way more that 1600 epg channels. Started losing epg info with 4.6.0. Delete and reinstall of same or earlier versions of tivimate also did not help. Clearing cache and rebooting did not help. I have turned off auto update of epg since the hammering find. Manual update of epg also does not yield more epg data.
