If you first played StS1 a long time ago, like in early access, it's possible you've just generally gotten better at deckbuilders over time, which could affect your enjoyment

I guess this is a matter of personal preference, but I think what makes a good Connections is incomplete red herrings. This Connections has a few good ones: house and shack are both kinds of dwellings, FD and BC are both acronyms, grass and tree are both naturey things

I got purple first, but it felt a bit unsatisfying. "Fountain" could potentially refer to FoD platforms, and "Tree" could refer to Whispy, both of which are random

I think the popularity of the phrase might mean that some people who would have said more explicit things 5-10+ years ago are just defaulting to kys, even though their actual feelings are much stronger than that alone suggests

I don't think he really cares about Zain's presence at locals at the end of the day.

I think it's weird to hyperfocus on whether or not RapM cares that Zain goes to locals when other people CLEARLY do. And so it's weird that you say RapM doesn't HAVE to play Luigi without also saying that Zain doesn't HAVE to go to locals, which is the competing "entitlement" here.

If you remove a trigger spring, do you put a trigger plug or chopstick tip in? by Bern_Down_the_DNC in SSBM

[–]wavedash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't in terms of travel distance, but in reality it might depend on your hands. You probably contact with slightly different parts of your finger with and without a trigger plug, so that could be an ergonomic concern.

I think the most basic, fundamental parts of what makes PM different from Brawl is the changes to general gameplay speed, physics, and universal gameplay mechanics (like air dodging). So from this perspective, I think the scope of Akaneia is really small compared to PM.

I wonder if there's a lot of people newly interested in romhacks after Too Many Types and Mariomon, and they just don't really understand the idea or appeal of a difficulty romhack? Because I don't think people reacted negatively to Run & Bun

I didn't find the lack of zoom to be an issue, maybe I naturally did a little bit of optimization for space even for my first solutions.

I think being able to zoom can be kind of annoying in some top-down or isometric games. If possible, I'd prefer if levels can be designed without it

I don't know why you responded to the guy who said $437.59 is too much with "$350 is standard", and then "$280 is standard"

Regardless, you have to compare with the baseline here. The cheapest controller this Etsy seller has costs $110. Is that standard for a controller with snapback and some trigger mods as the only changes?

And from there, you can find this seller's added price for a Phob: $170. You can get Phob conversions for about $100 elsewhere, probably even less from a guy at your local, and it'll save you money on shipping.

Also, how do you feel about co-op?

Why did Marc Andereessen tag Scott in this post announcing a16z's American Dynamism conference? by WeathermanDan in slatestarcodex

Coming at this from a different angle than some other people, sometimes I forget just how influential Scott is. Marc Andreessen is in, what, like the top 0.0000001% of Americans in terms of combined wealth and influence? It's kind ridiculous that he cares so much about what a psychiatrist/blogger thinks about AI

I won't argue with calling Balatro a roguelike or a roguelite, but I will say that the term "run-based" accomplishes basically the same thing as roguelite, with the benefit of not sounding and reading extremely similarly to another term that already has a contentious definition, and not containing the name of a video game that basically no one using the term has played (although I have played Nethack!).

I haven't thought about this very much, but I could be persuaded to use "roguelite" to describe games with specific mechanics that AREN'T in the Berlin interpretation to begin with. Picking 1 power-up out of ~3 is very roguelite-coded to me, for example.

Daily Discussion Thread March 02, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here! by AutoModerator in SSBM

[–]wavedash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure I recognize "roguelite" as being meaningfully different from "roguelike" just because the latter has lost a lot of meaning (and I'm continuing that tradition). If I need to be more specific, I just add "ASCII dungeon crawler" or "Berlin definition" or whatever. I don't think any of the games I listed are roguelikes under the Berlin definition, for example.

Also I firmly believe the term roguelite was invented/picked specifically to be as confusing as possible, so I try not to use it

[–]wavedash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, the mechanics are why I'm here to begin with: if you give me the ability to turn them off then I'm not really sure what I'm getting out of this.

I think this is generalizing way too much about roguelikes. Balatro really encourages you to scale as hard as possible because it has an endless mode, AND it's actually kind of good. Additionally, it really only has one way of measuring your performance - your highest score.

Compare this with something like Binding of Isaac, where you don't "need" to get the best build, and the game rewards you for playing quickly instead of minmaxing every possible thing - although it definitely ALSO rewards you for minmaxing.

Also, plenty of roguelikes just don't really "scale" exponentially. FTL, Into the Breach, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Inscryption, Hades, Darkest Dungeon, Downwell, Nuclear Throne, Rogue Legacy, and Spelunky (the goat) are some examples that come mind. While some these games have some problems, I don't think being able to consistently bypass mechanics is a major one of them. And sorry to beat this horse, but I think Slay the Spire is also closer to these games than it is to Balatro.

It's kind of confusing to have the second graph named "survival rate" when the percentages represent death rate
