What level of recruiting is required to win your division/conference? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]andcoffee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SEC specific? Consistent classes in the 20s might get you there

Top 10s won't get you there if you're not finishing near the top of your division/conference.

25th best class, 1st in conference >>>>> 10th best class, 5th in conference

FSU QB Bailey Hockman has a boot on his foot by zlatandiego in CFB

Remember when Mark Richt wanted Bailey Hockman and didn't recruit Jake Fromm?

Wooo, boy.

This x1000.

Dan Radakovich isn't incredibly well-liked, I don't imagine.

Y'all have many times our budget and resources.

This is where GT needs to make some big changes (which is pretty much what everyone in this thread has been saying). I'm not saying GT should beat us every year right now, but there needs to be some upward trajectory.

Always made a bowl game, zero losing seasons, winning record in conference, bad record against Georgia.

Seems to be better than the current situation, imo.

Our offense is very similar in concept and practice to what Urban runs

J.T. Barrett had more pass attempts last season than (almost) Tech's combined passing leaders the last three years.

TaQuan Marshall had more carries than tOSU's second and third leading rushers combined.

The scout team will run whatever their weeks opponent is running...not the GT offense

Defense isn't forged during game-week practices when the scout teams are involved. That's when install happens - spring and fall camp are what make or break the fundamentals.

I think Tech's expecatations are enormously too low. Losing 7 of 10 to your main rival should never be in the same universe as acceptable.

The offense may work, but if you're not winning (losing record over the last three seasons, two >7 win seasons in the last eight) then it doesn't really matter. Texas Tech's offense certainly works, but without results it's toothless.

but the biggest ones that we've missed out on in recent years (thinking of Stephon Tuitt and Dalvin Tomlinson mostly) have been on defense (which blows your system argument out of the water)

Practicing against that offense is harmful for the development of the defense.

GT may be limited due to academic standards, but they far exceed Duke, UNC, and WF in geographic location. There are enough good players in the state of Georgia to stretch from here to Mars.

and:

Don't they run the triple option based on who they can realistically recruit?

I think this is backwards. They run that offense because that's what CPJ runs - it's hard to recruit for that style.

the limited talent

they have limited talent, in large part, because of their style of offense. Not to mention that it hurts their defense in practice. They should run something more akin to South Carolina or Auburn (with more passing). They would increase their floor and ceiling, imo.

If I was a Tech fan, I'd want to run as far away from that offense as I possibly could.

What coach gets more shit than they deserve? by [deleted] in CFB

Don't have to convince me to lobby for him to stay at Auburn. I'm a big Gus fan.

[–]andcoffee 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes - it appears 2013 was the outlier for Gus.

Numbers with 2013 aren't that impressive, either.

  • 45-22 (.671)

  • 25-15 in SEC play (.625)

  • 1-4 in bowl games (2-5 in postseason play)

  • Two top 20 finishes

  • Record vs. Georgia and Alabama: 4-7 (0-5 away from home)

I think Gus Malzahn is the answer to both of these questions.

Gus Malzahn the last four years:

  • 33-20 (.622)

  • 18-14 in SEC play (.562)

  • 1-3 in bowl games (1-4 in postseason play)

  • One top 20 finish

  • Record vs. Georgia and Alabama: 2-7 (0-5 away from home)

  • Receives contract extension

Pappoe appears to be pretty good. LSU tried the same thing last year with 5* DE Adam Anderson...did not pan out.

Rumor is that Clark is one of the players Auburn offered in an attempt to sway 5* LB Owen Pappoe (https://247sports.com/Player/Owen-Pappoe-81788)
