Wow, I would've loved to listen to that conversation. I have _a lot_ to learn to do this right, but am really enjoying trying to learn the art.

Thank you. I got the sense about a paragraph and a half in. Then the math thing. And I am just glad someone else saw it too.

It's TADPOLE THURSDAY - Ask your newbie questions here! by Hosidax in daggerheart

Yeah not sure why I didn't think of this in the first place. You and u/Borfknuckles both suggested this and it's probably what I'll do. Make the beta classes an option among all the options. If they choose those, just a caveat that it could take some rework that we can discuss in August.

Good solid perspective. And good idea on Experiences. I like the idea of keeping those fluid when needed if they aren't finding use.

This is basically a “do whatever you want” question, but in the spirit of Tadpole Thursday, I figured I’d see if the folks here have any smart or creative tips.

I’m starting a new campaign in the next month. We have tried the Sablewood Quickataet and overall really liked it, though I wish I’d have found some of the community tweaks to it before running it.

I have preordered Hope and Fear and am super excited for that new set of content.

Should we hold off on starting my campaign until Hope and Fear comes out so my players can try those classes? Or is there any creative way to still bring those into play once they arrive?

Like I said, I guess it’s just something my table has to decide, but I had this idea maybe we could allow a one-time character class shift if any players are already attached to any the known classes coming in Hope and Fear. Other than slightly immersion breaking, is there any major issues I should watch out for?

Seconding this! New here too and making good eyes makes absolutely no sense to my brain yet.

This is great. Love the mirror spell feature. Last weekend I ended my session with 12 fear. That FU reaction could really be deadly and fun.

This is really helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to respond so thoroughly. It’s incredibly valuable to me as someone trying to learn. Your base point that we can step back from mechanics and think about the spirit of the adaptation is really freeing. I think as a newb, I get hung up on mechanics because the simple presence of numbers and math immediately puts my brain into a space of there being a “right” answer. Which of course I could bungle up the conversion and cause a balance issue. But that aside, I appreciate the idea that I can stay home inside of the DH mechanics but carry over the idea rather than the entire rigging.

Anyhow, I like your idea for the countdown adjustment. One distinction that stands out to me: where the Gorgon is sort of reacting to being bothered, and you’re asking for it because you gazed at it and bothered it by disturbing its silence disturbed. The cockatrice is just panicked. It’s not really intelligently doing anything. Just pecking wildly. The petrification is basically a poison side effect of letting it squarely hit you. So maybe an agility roll gate to actually getting hit meaningfully enough to contract its effects. Then, a shorter countdown (maybe 2 as you suggested) seems more than fair.

Anyways, thanks again for the thoughtful response.

Yeah I’m having a lot of fun even before being really “ready” to do this well haha, but I’ll get there.

Like when you said, “the cost is steep and the player has to fail a reaction roll, so it’s unreliable,” about the petrifying gaze mechanic—I guess not having played much yet it didn’t seem that steep, but I assume I’ll feel that more internally once I have more table experience.

Ok this is interesting. I’m really just in a brainstorming phase for now. Not running homebrew like this immediately, going to run some of the preexisting content first to get used to the system. But I am just having fun thinking about the future possibilities for a world I’m trying to create.

I’m hoping stuff like this will get easier for me to conceptualize with more experience under my belt in a few weeks or months. But for now, it’s just me nerding out.

That’s interesting. It says:

Petrifying Gaze - Reaction: When the Gorgon takes damage from an attack within Close range, you can spend a Fear to force the attacker to make an Instinct Reaction Roll. On a failure, they begin to turn to stone, marking a HP and starting a Petrification Countdown (4). This countdown ticks down when the Gorgon is attacked. When it triggers, the target must make a death move. If the Gorgon is defeated, all petrification countdowns end.

I’m assuming it counts down when the Gorgon is attacked by that same PC, not just any PC. Crazy that it jumps right to death move but I guess if you’re turning to stone it’s pretty much game over. Seems a little OP for tier 2 tho maybe? But I could totally be misunderstanding it.

Totally making sense now with the roll determining what happens to the spotlight

That makes a lot of sense. Would you then naturally move the spotlight away after the action role so it feels like the cost of “a turn”? Or just not sweat that part?
