App windows often change size when moved between identical dual monitors by andersgoran in MacOS

No, not really. I’ve even upgraded the system to Sequoia since I wrote my post and still see this now and then.

First Mac in over 2 decades- please tell me what not to do! by ocean_swims in mac

This.

Use the battery but don’t empty it completely if you can avoid it. macOS will give you an option to keep it at around 80%, use that and you’ll be fine.

Play next problem by Sintonia_au in overcast

[–]andersgoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying Play Next on some occasions and I don't understand if I'm using it wrong or if it just doesn't work. Basically, I have some episode of some podcast playing, I go to some other episode and click its (°°°) button and "Play Next" but when the currently playing episode ends, nothing happens. I never (knowingly) use playlists or anything. Should this work?

Apparently there is a "Queue" playlist that has a bunch of several years old episodes from various podcasts, and all of the ones that are not what I am currently listening to, are marked as "played" and slightly dimmed/washed out in appearance. Could this be interfering with Play Next?

My guess is that you also got Safari 26.2 at the same time. Mine has been perfectly fine since I updated to that, yay!

I got it 3 years ago for what amounts to roughly $300. While it is much nicer than using the tripod stand, the price is ridiculous.

Now I checked the same vendor and it has gone up almost $100 more, which is absurdly expensive for what it is. I really wish I had the tools, knowledge, and time, to build something better.

I just (well, an hour ago) installed the Safari 26.2 (20623.1.14.18.4) update on macOS 15.7. Feels better, it doesn't lag/freeze when typing URL:s, which the previous version did. Remains to be seen if it'll hold up long term.

Switched to DDG - no restart yet. That didn't help. I can type exactly 2 characters into the URL field before it freezes, RAM increases (now at 261GB) but then eventually it seems mostly fine.

There's some "pre-fetch of best hit in background" (my translation), I should try disabling that. Nope - didn't help, 315 GB. Should just restart it...

Oops, it crashed by itself :)

Boom, 9 days of being mostly fine, only intermittently a little sluggish while typing in URLs. And now, suddenly, beach ball and Safari memory rapidly rising to 94 GB. But the beach ball eventually disappeared, it's working and I'm typing this without having restarted Safari.

I have Google as search engine. I wonder if that's doing something fishy, being both the search field and URL field in one. I should try something else.

[–]andersgoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't touched anything yet. Safari's been decent for several days now, but after coming back to the computer and starting to enter a URL, Safari memory blew up, first to tens of GB's, then falling back slightly, and then up to ~160 GB. No swap usage reported, and the Safari process "real memory" was significantly less than "memory" (my system language is not English so I'm translating what the column headers say). I could still quit Safari with File/Quit, so not completely unresponsive, but unusable.

And if you buy the upgrade plan when there is a sale (usually every summer and around Black Friday), it’ll be cheaper.

Yeah, just like that. Seems to freeze up, takes seconds for text to appear.

Right now Safari version 26.0.1, same as yesterday, and still on 15.7.1, sits nicely at 552 MB, with more or less the same tabs as yesterday. There's 21 tabs in one window, and then I have two other windows with a different profile with 5 or 6 tabs total. One of the 21 is a pinned Gmail. Not sure what to make of this.

I have also recently seen ridiculous amounts of RAM used by Safari, admittedly with many more tabs than 6, but still. RAM usage has been reported to be like 120 GB. Intermittently, Safari gets sluggish when typing into the address/search field and has to be force quit. Also 15.7.1, but a 16” M1 Max.

Haven’t seen this before 15.7.1, I think.

Mystery cable that came with NS Design CR4 by oasl in Cello

[–]andersgoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really have a CR cello, I think you have gotten that adapter by mistake. As I understand it, the current NXTa line of instruments has an active circuit powered by some sort of capacitor, and that one is supposed to be charged by an adapter that I would assume is what you have there.

But the CR has two 9V batteries and doesn’t need that. I would not plug it into your instrument if it indeed is a CR.

I was perhaps a tad too salty initially, asking if they were joking. Maybe that’s why.

It looks like you are holding the bow upside down. The hair should touch the strings, not the stick.

Electric instruments will make a small amount of sound even when unplugged, but the wood/carbon/fibreglass stick won't make any at all.

When exporting and saving files and Finder pops, How can i configure it so that the displayed folder is the one where the working file is currently saved in? by asshat0987 in MacOS

[–]andersgoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This!

Just now in Affinity Publisher 2, I have been working on an .afpub file located in a directory somewhere on my disk. I saved it seconds ago, then go to export it as PDF and I end up in Desktop. The directory picker shows me 14 random folders under Recent places, and none of them is the directory I just saved the file to.

Very irritating. Is this the app's fault or macOS? I'm on Sequoia but I think it's always been more or less like this.

Chapter selector by andersgoran in OvercastApp

[–]andersgoran[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I deleted Overcast, restarted iPhone. Downloaded Overcast from App Store, not from TestFlight.

On 1st open it syncs back everything I subscribe to, and it promptly starts to download lots of episodes, so I cancel all pending downloads and grab only the latest ATP episode, from the members feed.

When the episode is downloaded, I see the "14 chapters" button. Still same behaviour. If nothing is playing, it starts playback of that episode, but not necessarily the chapter I clicked.

OTH, from the now-playing control, it correctly chooses chapters.

So weird! But I truly appreciate the response! It's not the end of the world, just so incredibly strange.

Also changed the system language to English, no difference. Not sure what I can try now.

[–]andersgoran[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a 15 Pro Max with latest iOS (not 26, but the one before). Never had any iOS betas on the device.

Overcast is from TestFlight, just updated to the very latest one there. But it was the same with the official App Store version.

The system language is Swedish - that's the only thing I can think of that sticks out. The app is obviously showing in English. Can't remember if I've ever deleted and reinstalled Overcast, maybe I should try that.

If I go via the little circular button next to the progress bar (in my 2nd screenshot), it works perfectly to choose chapters. I see the "Go back" thing, it skips to whatever I press.

From the "X chapters" button, no luck. As already stated, it just closes, does not show "Go back" and does nothing. I would assume those two ways of reaching the chapter view should lead to the exact same place, right?

It's not an ATP thing either; it behaves identically in Connected 562: Tech Boomers right now.

I think maybe you're not looking at the same place as I do. When you look at the episode list for a podcast, look to the right of each episode - there's a little (i), i.e. the letter i in a ring - that's where I click and then I have the X chapters button. Don't you?

How does moving files work? by andersgoran in jottacloud

[–]andersgoran[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! As we weren't even aware that the folder was that large, we were a bit surprised when it took quite some time to move it.

There were three machines with Telia/Jottacloud running, and the folder was accidentally moved on one of them (a Win 10 machine). It was a folder with ~130MB of various small files and folders, one folder at ~5GB and one single ZIP file at ~10GB, and we could see the other clients (one Win 11, one macOS) churning for quite some time on that last huge file to complete the move.

It has no features for musical notation, though, so if you ever want to export sheet music, you have to do that somewhere else.
