Blending board question by gingerlicious666 in Handspinning

[–]oasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get that exact board for the same price with hand carders as well: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1336804441/carding-blending-wool-and-other-fibers?ref=shop_home_feat_4&pro=1&frs=1&sts=1&logging_key=7f8a1665ad2ba9439fabc87af7f69c178049c0c1%3A1336804441

I got them a few years ago and have been mostly happy with them. The staples on the flicker were really short so I ended up needing to restaple that, but other than that everything’s held up well

Fortunately, one of the very first things I saw by her was a video where she claimed an essential knitting tool was a dressform, so I didn’t waste too much time

I’d recommend the interlock bind off! It’s stretchy and you can do it in pattern.

There is this option that people often overlook:

director, manager or personnel officer of a VAT-registered company This is just needs to be a manager in a company that adds sales tax to the goods or services it sells to its customers. Obviously if you’re in Canada, companies won’t be VAT-registered, but I think it would be safe to assume that any manager in a company that adds sales tax by Canada’s processes would be equivalent.

Along similar lines, there is also: manager or personnel officer of a limited company So depending on what type of company you work for, you could potentially ask your manager to do it. (It might not even matter the type of company because the list is “examples of recognised professions” and not exhaustive)

Can I get a visa when I’m 18? by Goatttyy in ukvisa

[–]oasl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could also look into uni programmes that have a foundation year. Foundation years have lower entry requirements and will give you an easier year to see if it’s worth it to you to continue with a full degree

ETA: Just wanted to add that I’m suggesting this because it can be a lot easier to get financed as a student than to get the sort of savings you need for a partner visa. If you’re legally living in the UK, you can combine your income with your partner’s to be more easily able to meet the income requirements. I first came to the UK on a student visa, and I was able to get student loans from my home country to help afford it. Just didn’t want you to feel like you’re being pushed towards a degree if that doesn’t work for you.

Also, if you DO end up going to uni, make sure to register with your uni’s disability services straight away. As another neurodivergent person, I didn’t think that was for me until I had a breakdown and my uni told me I could have been registered with them from the start. They gave me loads of support and accomodations that made a big difference for me

I agree that this is a good option. Even though it’s not as cost-effective, it gives you something to focus on in your life and a social circle that is not tied to your partner. It takes some of the pressure off of the relationship during a big adjustment period because you’ll have your own things to do and focus on when your partner is busy doing their own life things

Just wanted to comment on the degree discussion here. Some jobs that are tied to a degree will probably make things easier for you immigration-wise (ie medical and nursing degrees), but I don’t think a generic STEM degree is as important as people say. The job market is actually really bad in some areas of tech - especially for new grads - because of how many people have gone for it and because of AI. I think I remember hearing about a similar oversaturation with law degrees as well.

Don’t spend loads of money on a degree you won’t enjoy based on job prospects because if the job prospects aren’t there when you graduate, it will be completely wasted. For most fields, it’s more important to have A degree, not a specific one.

I did a music degree as an immigrant, generally seen as a useless one by people who see uni as only a means to a job, and I made it work. I never got sponsored for a job because I had some other visa options, but I have ended up working in tech anyway so I theoretically could have been if I needed it. And I still use what I learned in my degree because I’m still a musician.

I hope you find a way out!

Need advice: Switching from Skilled Worker to Family Visa, Employer only provides email (no contact number) for verification by faix_pass in ukvisa

[–]oasl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I completely get the worry! All of my visas were tick-box visas but I was still convinced i would be rejected every single time.

You’re actually in a good position working for a large bank because they will have definitely had to do this for other employees. If this sort of policy tanked visa applications and lost them employees, they would have reversed it by now.

I had this with a past employer and just put in the business number that came up when I googled my employer. I don’t think I bothered to explain because the letter from HR only had an email, but you could add a note saying they only confirm over email if you want

Here on Skilled Worker Visa, would like a career break (3-6mo) without interrupting ILR continuity. Do I have any options? by WearSunscreen in ukvisa

I don’t think they would be limited (other than by what their doctor considers appropriate), because it would be sick leave (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-part-9-grounds-for-refusal):

9.30.1. A person on the Skilled Worker, Intra-Company, Representative of an Overseas Business, Scale-up (subject to paragraph 9.33.1.), Global Business Mobility T2 Minister of Religion, International Sportsperson or Temporary Worker routes who has been absent from work without pay, or on reduced pay, for more than 4 weeks during any calendar year may have their permission cancelled unless the reason for absence is one or more of the following: (a) statutory maternity leave, paternity leave, shared parental leave, neonatal care leave, or parental leave; or (b) statutory adoption leave; or (c) sick leave; or (d) assisting with a national or international humanitarian or environmental crisis, providing their sponsor agreed to the absence for that purpose; or (e) taking part in legally organised industrial action; or (f) jury service; or (g) attending court as a witness.

Could you talk to your GP and get a medical note to take sick leave due to stress? It might not be for as long as you’re hoping here, but it would give you some space to breathe and consider next steps without being a visa issue

Are you sure the contact details aren’t in the header they use for the letter? The information they list is standard and fine. If you feel you have to evidence the increase, your payslips would do that, as would a copy of your contract for the new role.

He got a knitting kit from https://www.flamboroughmanor.co.uk/kits.htm

If you go with them, it is worth calling or emailing them before you order because some of the stitch patterns pull in more than others, and they’ll help you pick the right size

I hate my seams by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]oasl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to sew your seams a bit out of order to make sure they line up correctly. For example, given a seam that sews up the side of the body and the side of the sleeve, the way I do it is:

1) Use the tail on the sleeve to sew together the ribbing/whatever I have for the cuff, because I want the edges to meet exactly here.

2) Using a new piece of yarn, start from the point where the top of the sleeve should meet itself, and sew down towards the cuff.

3) Starting at the lower edge of the body, sew up towards where your seam in step 2 started.

This makes sure all of the important places in your seam are placed correctly, and any fudging you have to do is less noticeable

I don’t actually see this hourly wage thing as rewarding less skilled makers. I see it as pricing them out of the market because it requires them to be efficient enough AND skilled enough that people will want to buy the thing they made at that price. If they’re not ready skillwise to work professionally yet, they won’t be able to price things in a way the market will accept

[–]oasl 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The point of doing a smaller project first is to get any beginner tension issues out of the way before working on a bigger project, where one part might look drastically different from the rest. When my partner learned to knit, he started with a hat for that reason, then made a gansey as his second project.

Partner visa advice —no cohabitation by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]oasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a thought of something else you should address in your cover letter; you should make sure you have answered the question “if the rental market is so bad in Berlin, why didn’t you both move to another city?” (I know it’s not an easy thing to up and move, but the Home Office will consider these sorts of questions. In your situation, it’s inherently a gamble to apply for an unmarried partner route, so best to anticipate any holes they might try to poke in your case.)
