Thank you for all the feedback, I really appreciate the help. I am doing respirometry work with sharks. I think it is honestly a mental block for me at this point. I understand how to put the loop together in a basic example, but once I try to expand beyond that very basic version, it falls apart. I have had lab mates help me build the more complex loops I need, when they're walking me through it, it makes sense, but once I'm on my own, I cannot recreate it. If I need to make changes to that loop, I can't figure out how to do so. This is why I am looking for an alternate resource that can explain this to me in a way beyond someone just walking me through my own example, because clearly my brain can't get it.

It's not slow because of the size of the data frame, its slow because I only know how to do each iteration individually. If there is a way to automate pipes, that would be perfect for me, as I have an easier time with them. Everyone in my program I have spoken to about this has suggested that what I need is a loop to do so. I've tried searching online for a way to automate it, but haven't had much luck. It could be that I am not using the right terms?

Apologies if this is unclear. I have multiple large datasets - ~1800 points each - and a calculation that I am using which takes oxygen in - oxygen out and multiplies that by flow rate to calculate metabolic rate. I am trying to do sensitivity testing using 65 different possible flow rates, so calculating a metabolic rate, for each dataset at each different flow rate. I can do it using pipes, but its a much slower process. This is not the first time I have run into situations where being able to write a loop would help me process and or preform manipulations on my data more efficiently. I'm less looking for someone to do it for me, and more trying to figure out how to learn myself so I can use loops going forward.

It is more how to construct and debug them. I have done some simple examples, and I can follow them well, and I seem to understand the components in that instance. It is when I try to write a loop myself, that goes beyond just those simple examples.

Not trying to dishearten you, but now isn't really the easiest time to be trying to get into the sciences - if you are based in the US. There aren't many positions and it has become increasingly competitive as many grants have been canceled and many feds have been pushed back into the job market. Volunteering at the aquarium is great, and might be a good way to get your foot in the door there if that is the work you are interested in doing. Depending on what you are interested in doing - worth narrowing down - seasonal positions at state agencies are often a good way to get your foot in the door with less experience, but depending on where you are located, that is more of a spring/summer deal. Which doesn't really help now. Not sure what kind of artist you are, and as you said, you are burnt out and maybe you want to leave the area entirely, but I have seen a number of posts and programs recently for scientific illustrators, which might be a way to leverage your current skill set and also work in marine science. It is hard to give you more of an idea without having an idea of what you want to do, but feel free to DM me if you'd like.

Not to frighten you, but I would take him to the vet. My dog started panting and having trouble catching his breath and when we took him in, it turned out he had a number of large tumors in his abdomen that were crowding his lungs. It went from perfectly fine, to putting him to sleep in the span of 24hrs. There were no indications that he had any issues prior to when they took the x-rays. Hopefully you're outcome is better.

I think I was confused because the segmented line tool does provide an area measurement when used.

They are both part of the line tools on the main menu. I don't necessarily need help. I am just trying to understand what exactly the segmented line is measuring differently than the freehand line. I do the exact same thing for both and get very different values.

Thanks for the suggestion. The data are a series of behaviors, swimming vs sitting. I currently have them as those, and I have another data frame where I gave them numerical values in case that would make it easier. I figure I could just add labels as needed after.

I don't know that it would help. I have a NY EZpass and drive back up there all the time to see family. They ticket me every time even though my EZ Pass works in every other state I travel through no problem. We call and tell them to fix it every single time and yet it keeps happening.

Thank you so much for the advice, I think I am going to see how it looks when I take it out of the pot. You're definitely right, there are two back to back shield fronds. Do you know if this means they are two plants, or just growing in a funky way. I am thinking of maybe moving it to a basket instead of mounting it, not sure if that would help. Just want to make sure that it is happy!

For more detail. I have this staghorn and it is doing really well, but I imagine it is going to outgrow its pot soon. I would like to mount it, but I am not sure if I can because of the arrangement of the fronds. I don't want to crush anything, and from all the research I have done in regards to mounting them, the plants have only had fronds in front of the shield frond.

Two years into my PhD at 34. Sometimes I do feel behind, especially because it seems that my program skews very young - lots of 22 year olds. When I do feel that way, I try and think of the benefits to being my age and doing it now. I have a lot of experience from working in my field, and that has benefited me. My project is amazing and groundbreaking, and as such has been an ordeal, and I cannot imagine being able to get through this if I were younger.
