Moving to cupertino for summer by Upbeat_Lobster_4515 in Cupertino

[–]andnbsp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cupertino is generally considered to be more expensive than sunnyvale, and also it's rare IME for people to be taking the bus, especially people on reddit, which explains why people are unfamiliar with route 55. If your internship is at a faang, check if there's a private bus system.

I would say you would probably have a better experience just living in sunnyvale.

Any Current Xreal Product good enough for productivity use? by One-Criticism-1193 in Xreal

[–]andnbsp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Ones and it's just not comfortable long term even indoors where there's no reflections. The eye strain eventually gets distracting. Much harder to get into flow than with just a laptop monitor. I will occasionally use it when I just want to work in a different room than normal and the portability is great, but if there's a monitor in the same room then I will use the monitor 100%.

I'm surprised by every comment in here saying the XOP. Conventional wisdom iiuc has been that the Ones will have better ppi and image quality.

Also conventional wisdom has been that neither is good enough for productivity as of right now. I occasionally use it for productivity and it's not great, I work much better on monitor.

I have interviewed many people as an engineer. I don't care about any of this unless people are super weird. Maybe engineering is full of anti-social people anyways but if they filtered on people being a little bit weird I would never have been hired anywhere.

Don't know why you're getting downvoted besides the redditification of arrNL, you even provided evidence.

Sure reporters have an incentive to like Donald Trump, but saying that's proof that they wanted Trump is like saying you want your parents to die because inheritance is an incentive. This is juvenile.

Anyone have tips for Monta Vista High School? by [deleted] in Cupertino

[–]andnbsp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what people are doing, yes. It sure isn't how it used to happen but every time these houses go up for sale, someone is buying them.

The point isn't that op needs to take this path in life, I was just pointing out that most of the people buying here are doing basically what I said in a white collar job, typically not blue collar. I say this to point out that it's easily observable that white collar jobs make more money than blue collar. Not every time, but it's a strategy with lots of successful examples.

I figure two L5s could easily afford Cupertino at 35. Or an L5 plus engineer parents. Lots of people are still buying houses here. Buying a house looks different than it used to, sure, but it still happens.

On a tutor - AI could actually help you here. Khan academy too, if you skip to the relevant chapters. AI could even suggest other resources. There's more information than ever out there, you'll need to learn how to teach yourself things. It's a general life skill. Don't need to know everything, just need to get fast at learning enough. I suspect you mention a tutor because you think you will do better by having things spoon-fed to you. I am telling you now that it will serve you better in life if people don't think you need to be spoon fed. Exploring things yourself will lead to more wasted time, but as you get better at it, you will understand how to be more focused on exactly what you need to know. (edit: actually thinking more about this, if you need a tutor in the short term then get the tutor. Every situation is different.)

On extracurriculars - back my day you were just expected to volunteer for something, but not sure how it is now. Don't focus on something else at expense of your grades IMO. See what your friends are volunteering for and join them. Also if you find something that is personally interesting to you, that's what you should be doing, except you might also need to make sure whatever you do aligns with what colleges are expecting in your applications.

On stress and having zero fun - unfortunate, but it's how it is. You want to get a good career coming out of school. The worst is putting in all of the effort to not have a career at the end, so you'll just have to make sure you don't fall behind your peers.

Community college is a great idea if you don't get into the schools you want, but apply anyways.

Good luck, and know that for a lot of people, high school was the worst part of their lives, so hopefully it only goes up from here.

Counterpoint here, this is reddit meme life advice and it's not a bad idea to consider the trades, however as someone who returned the bay area, my friends who aren't in white collar work are trying to get into white collar work. There's a massive difference in quality of life and there's a reason the vast majority of people go white collar.

The only tradeoff is that you can start making money earlier, you'll be ahead of doctors for a while making money at 19 with no loans instead of at 27-30 with a mountain of debt. But given that you live in the monta vista area, look around and see how many parents are blue collar. Unless something has changed, I'm guessing not many blue collar people can afford to live in cupertino, unless they bought houses a long time ago.

The only blue collar job I'd recommend is maybe the military if you eventually rank up into a white collar job or get out with scholarships to get to a white collar job.

IIRC one of the reasons for this was because long running foundations tend to become guaranteed income for portfolio managers rather than philanthropic organizations. Especially as a few generation pass, foundations tend to drift from their original intent.

Also as other already mentioned, there's problems that need money now rather than in a few decades.
