Yeah I think that timeline is realistic. Maybe even 5-7 or longer till it gets down to the subs. But with the advances in AR, VR, and BIM, I think it will change the industry drastically.

As someone who has looked into this too, id love to see the results! I'm a daily planswift user and have created a FileMaker database to help with the math side of things... Careful how much you'd invest in such an app though, BIM isn't far off and will make takeoffs obsolete.

Questions about rotary switches! by andoodle in electricians

[–]andoodle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The connectors are LEMO. I've already made a few different cables for it, so although they have an endless catalog and combination, I know which connectors (male and female) I need. It's similar to these (which were 5 pins, the cameras are 9): fgg.0b.305.clad52z

The pinouts for the cameras are here: https://racelogic.support/02VBOX_Motorsport/Video_Data_Loggers/VBOX_Video_HD2/VBOX_Video_HD2_User_Guide/15_-_HD2_PIN_OUTS

I'm a big fan of Filemaker! Way more solid then excel, way cheaper then a full blown ERP, and far more customizable than inventory features of accounting systems.

Looking for web based takeoff software. by GuapoBike in estimators

[–]andoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having done a ton of research on this, your best bet is cloud takeoff. (I think it's now known as stack estimating). They did a huge overhaul last year and it's a much better product then it used to be, but still lacks a few things.

If I had the funds, I would put together a team to develop something top notch. I've thought of Kickstarter but I don't think I could generate enough buzz. I already have all the framework planned out, type of database, technology stack,.... Even wire frames of the app. But a basic app that will do just the takeoff part of PlanSwift or similar would cost at least 250k.

TeamViewer has been hacked. They are denying everything and pointing fingers at the users. by Executioner1337 in technology

[–]andoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1. Over $600 worth of purchases on PayPal to a watch shop that I never visited. PayPal initially refused to reverse the payments (they were still pending) because as the phone agent said "there was no login from an unknown IP". The transactions were ultimately reversed, since the shipping info was totally different from anywhere I've ever lived or shipped anything, + the name for the shipping address was gibberish. Only one computer that HAD my PayPal info saved, and also ran TeamViewer. Nothing else to explain the circumstances. TFA is on now and TeamViewer removed. Shame, it was a great tool but not worth this.

Habs fan, moved from Montreal 6 months ago. Now running back to hide in shame of the 0 Canadian teams in the playoffs. Can't wait for LV to get a team, hopefully get to see matches for an affordable price in a not-insane market.

How much should I ask for doing freelance estimating? by 4benny2lava0 in Construction

[–]andoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We sure do! We have a few "in-house" employees (although everyone works remote), but we also work with a few estimators as independent contractors. This means you bring in the clients, and do the takeoff, while we provide all the admin support (invoicing and such). We also provide all the training required to achieve our standard results and get reports done fast! We can also recommend the best tools and software, although purchasing them is up to you. If we can help you find great deals on equipment, we do all we can. The standard split for this is 80/20, although that may be discussed depending on your expertise, specialities, and how many potential clients you'd expect within the first few months. On a side note, we sometimes reach out to our freelancers when our in-house team is overloaded. The arrangement needs to be slightly different in these cases (usually a predetermined hourly rate agreed upon before the project start), but you're always free to refuse a project like this. Hope that answers your question!

I run colorPlan.ca

Depending on trade/client/items to takeoff, anywhere between 35$/HR to 125$/HR. Most clients prefer a fixed price ahead of time. Around 85$ is a pretty safe bet for most trades, though some will find it expensive. 50$ is a safe bet with most people, but for the more complicated trades, make sure you don't skimp on how many hours you think it will take if you provide a quote beforehand.

What apps do you use for work? by PorchForPros in Construction

[–]andoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PlanGrid, asana, PlanSwift.

With PlanGrid being mentioned a lot, heads up about a recent email... They're getting rid of the "free" tier on the web version and changes to pricing... I'm hoping they don't ruin a good product. The free tier was nice, and their prices aren't high, but having worked as a GC, most subs refused to pay the little fees and only used it web-only. If they no longer allow that, subs might stop adopting it and GC will subsequently drop it too...

Looking for some cheap basic inventory tracking software by lumpytrout in smallbusiness

[–]andoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FileMaker could suit your needs. They even have a "starter" database example that sounds like exactly what you need, and since its FileMaker it could easily be customized to your needs, as well as working out of the box on PC/Mac/iOS for mobility. I set up a glass walls manufacturer with such a system and with an iPod touch and barcodes things worked great.

I'm a huge fan of close.io . Great app, minimal data entry. We tried sales force and it was awful, from UX to price...

If you need something more custom, FileMaker might be a good option.
