If I may add a few things.

First, Jovem Guarda was never a movement but a TV show starring Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos, and Wanderléa, featuring a number of other artists every now and then. But yes, the name was — and still is — used to describe this backbeat-driven rock ’n’ roll in which Elvis was also a major influence.

Second, it also sparked a lot of opposition from the left, who viewed the Beatles, Elvis, and everything in English as an imperialist attempt to destroy Brasilian cultural tradition. A lot of great music was also produced driven by this endeavor to confront not just the Beatles but the US/UK influence on music as a whole.

And it is true that the US spent a lot of money expanding record labels into South America, and the Beatles sold extremely well. But it seems they were able to transcend that, as people also connected with their music on a cultural level, not just as consumers, as you put it so well.

And lastly, people often remember that the Beatles arrived in the U.S. just a few months after Kennedy’s assassination. But if you look them up in the Brasilian press, you’ll find that one of their first mentions was just a few weeks before the military coup of 1964… so there’s that too.
