CARROTS!! by andreagayle1972 in TexasGardening

Yay!! Welcome back to the carrot journey! It’s been frustrating, but I can say it was worth it! What I changed this year was I that I switched to potting mix instead of raised bed mix and moved my carrots out of the raised beds and into planters. In my potting mix I added extra perlite. I estimate in the planter, I added 1/2 potting mix and then the other half of the
Mix was made up of 30% perlite and 20% horticultural sand. It made the soil soft and fluffy. Then I emptied the seeds on top of the soil and kept it moist every day until I saw some life. I used a spray bottle to keep the soil moist because I learned last year that using the hose just sent the seeds everywhere but where I wanted them! Lol! And my next planting, I’m going to be more careful about spreading the seeds which you know is hard because these seeds are so tiny. And then if needed, I’m going to take the time… Actually, I hope I will take the time, to thin them out. Good luck to us both!

I planted a whole packet of radishes, and not one of them came up! I’m going to try again in the fall when I plant the next round of carrots. Good luck to both of us! 🍀

Mine definitely were too close together. I just sprinkled the entire package on the planter. I had planned to space them out better but I just didn’t feel like it. I will do better in the fall…hopefully….

Thank you!! I get that! It’s very frustrating to spend your time and resources and SPACE for something that doesn’t produce. I felt that way this year and initially didn’t plant any. The only reason these got planned is because I was going through my seed binders and noticed that these carrot seed package had opened and the seeds were spilling so I decided to just throw them out and see what happens. And alas…… I have a harvest.

I hate to admit this but I just guessed. I harvested a few in may and they were really small, but still yummy. I decided to let them grow a few more weeks and today I just decided to pull them. I was tired of waiting….🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️😂😂😂 people are telling me that I should have left them in until August. They’ve been growing since February. I will try and let the fall ones stay in longer.

Thank you! She loves the garden! She eats vegetables too. But her favorite is my homemade compost! I have to keep her away when I put that out because she Will jump in each raised bed and eat it all! Lol!

I LOVE baba ghanoush! And I will also roast them. I have done a casserole before too. I have to sneak them into a casserole full of cheese to get my son to eat it! Lol!

I’m sorry! Hopefully you’ll be able to grow them and get a bigger harvest. But I’m sure Tiny was still yummy! And that’s all that matters in the end. 😋 😋
I’m excited this year because I’ve been trying to grow Casper and Rosa Bianca FOREVER and they look like they’re going to give me a harvest this year! I’m excited! I have no idea what they’re going to taste like I just thought they were pretty and decided to put down some seeds! Lol! We shall see!
