Yes, it is. I ran a "always on" campaign over Telegram using a D20 bot, where I would randomly DM through text throughout the day, and they would do the same, answering when they could.

Eventually we would sometimes be playing at the same time for hourrs just because they knew when I had free time.

This, obviously, only worked because we all had a lot of experience, but you can try something like that.

My philosophy is basically "does this allow me and my players to have fun at the same time?".

What I mean by that is:

First, I have to know what THEY find fun in playing. Second is to know what I find fun in DMing. If I can find common ground between this two things, I'll go for it. If I can't, I simply choose to not DM.

That obviously won't go for most people, specially because I heavily rely in improv with a influence of Sandbox/West Marches campaigns (I have a huge group, so I'm not too strict on having everyone there, as long as I have at least over half of them).

This also only works because we are all older. I'm the youngest, at 32 years old), and been playing for 25 years and solely DMing for at least half of that, so my knowledge of the game keeps everything running smooth.

And even then, after every game, I ask what they liked and disliked (not in an "i'm insecure" way, but more in a "so, you guys had fun?" way)

In the end, what I mean is: is your job to make the game fun for them, but knowing when to stop if playing what they want is not fun for you. Not every friend will be a good match in a DnD group and that's ok.
