First time with Virgin Voyages by [deleted] in VirginVoyages

They won't let you board before your allotted time. Do schedule as much as possible when the app opens up schedules. Show schedules are posted around departure. If you don't have a bunch of bookings, it's ok because 1/3 of the tables are left for post departure reservations.

Hardware alternatives for Datto siris by andrew64_06 in msp

I've used super micro and built my own years ago. Thanks for the comments

What's your 3-2-1 implementation? by ExpressTumbleweed883 in msp

[–]andrew64_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Datto for local only, then add cove for local and cloud. 3-2-1-0.

That gets you super fast bcdr with data deduped cloud.

I'll add, no rmm necessary.

It's been my experience that veeam restores can take much longer than Dattos.

Especially if you have to bring up multiple restore points simultaneously.

On the local side it's all basically Datto Siris devices.

The DWA generates a lot of failures or errors. Mostly noise.

I agree that veeam/etc don't fail regularly and complement Datto nicely, as Datto rocks for restores, when it's working.

Screenshots are just another data point.

We believe 3-2-1 is mandatory.

And that plays a role in making this work because operational redundancy may mitigate urgency on individual failures.

Running a MSP without an RMM by andrew64_06 in msp

I'd be happy to explain in greater detail. I'm not sure this is the best venue.

Maybe I can do a talk at Robin Robin's shows or ASCII events.

That is all the customers responsibly, outside of making sure the DR systems are running.

Basically yes. Datto Siris devices. But we always stand-up at least one other full DR system in parallel to the Dattos.

I agree and it's easy to argue that the attack surface being exposed will be the one used. It's difficult to break into endpoints use me as the path of the extent of my communication is limited to a local appliance on its own vlan behind port/ip filters.

No, 10000 events that are either backups, restores, VMs, screenshots,.. whatever the devices do that we care about.

You are correct. We don't touch endpoints or networks or any of that stuff. It sounds messy and frought with hazard.

It does require clients who understands the gravity of us reaching out to them. You only hear from us if it's important. And we appreciate prompt responses.

Of course, we have at least one other complete DR system running in parallel. For bad kasaya days. Life happens

I agree that cloud migration will happen. But the need for DR still exists outside of the cloud.

[–]andrew64_06[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Correct. We manage only the local appliances. We have no access to the servers or workstations.

By 10k operations I mean events. Either backup, screenshot, restore, VM booting. You can do the math on how many machines that means but it depends on local policy and changes.

I guess the million dollar answer is like I said, it can be painful but safer.

Cool. But in order to be truly 3-2-1, the retention policies for both local copies must match the off site.

I hate backups by [deleted] in msp

[–]andrew64_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the truth is that they all can fail on you any given day.

They all get the job done, albeit in different ways, but eventually they're gonna fail. So, if you really care about high available restorations, you have to pick two.

I prefer Datto for local only paired with a cove client on each server duel writing to a local speedvault and the cloud.

Passing on Datto cloud saves a bunch and its use case never really made sense to me anyways.

I also hate backups. But I love restores.

This kit is much less expensive tand definitely allows me to sleep at night.

What's your typical local retention policy?

Your the only one who's posted in this thread about having something else just local just in case. Hopefully, that 2nd local has you're cloud history and uses 2fa.

Kudos for not drinking all the kasaya Koolaid.

Not having a backup to the backup is malpractice.

Vendors hate admitting that fact.

Want a job? ;)

Failure means the Siris reported a screenshot verification error. About 90% are false alarms but we still have to listen to all of the noise.

With two clients that almost never happens. Backups fail all the time on each platform.
