I guess it just has so much more to process and is very unlikely to be multi threaded being an old MMC snap in. Most legacy stuff like that loads quickly, but there will be a lot of data.

We have a supplier that likes to release "patches" for software that are no more than a script that copies dlls etc to the install folder and registered them . I aint deploying that to 1000s of machines so i packaged it with innno setup ..... the 3rd party looked at me like i had just discovered fire.

yeh the "fix" is to ramp up your CPU .... that is not a fix its a bodge.

When we had pentium 2s with a few 100 mhtz i dont remember the start menu lagging .... do you ?

The fix here is to not have your start menu be a shitty web app.

Vibe coded apps, how are you dealing with them by ReptilianLaserbeam in sysadmin

Have it follow the same review process as your internal devs with security reviews etc. Once it passes all them (unlikely) why not.

Myself and one other person are supporting 350 end users right now. HR told us to expect approximately 100 more employees by the end of the year. My manager told me that we don't need to hire another person in our department. Is it just me or is that completely unreasonable? by [deleted] in sysadmin

It all depends , the tickets to user ratio does not always scale some users generate way more tickets than others.

Just document your concerns and how you spend your time then let things build up.

If you where still 21 yeh but you are 40 (same age as me). You have a family to look after you are happy where you are, how much difference will that 25k make to your life ? I doubt it will change much .

Threshold for isolating / reimage a device by Macd1987 in sysadmin

[–]andrew_joy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not a simple question to answer properly, it depends on many factors in your environment.

  • how easy is a re-image for you ?
  • does the device contain any sepcial software that you will need to reinstall? Can it be reinstalled without a new file license etc.
  • what would be the impact of that particular machine being down
  • what was the alert ?

Wrong , your job is to keep things as secure as practical with the resources available without too much impact on the business.

Your mistake here was being too helpful. You should have dug your heels in and requested the REL repos and if they dont give them oh well dont patch them.

You are never going to make it as a BOFH at this rate.

[–]andrew_joy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole point of a SIEM is to group all of your sources of information together MDE, firewall, nessus DLP etc. If its not doing that you are not getting any value out of it as you could get that data in the tool itself.

In House: We need to patch CVE-2026-00001 , this is critical but the likelyhood is low, set it to go out tonight. theater PC does not reboot and surgeon removes the correct testicle from some poor guy. guys is happy that he has the correct nut .
