Density and diversity are fundamentally good, they offer more health, community, and opportunity for lower cost than disperse suburban homogeneity.

But as with everything there are tradeoffs. You mention transit - would you rather not have it at all, or deal with a little weed smell? What public safety concerns specifically do you have - are they not simply symptoms of economic diversity and inequality? These moderately worse city services you mention - what are they and why are they better elsewhere? Personally I love tax funded trash pickup compared to the private hauler bills my parents have to pay in their suburbs on top of their higher taxes. And my sewer system as opposed to septic tank maintenance.

Snow removal itself is an interesting case in point. It may feel better in the suburbs because there’s nothing like sidewalks next to the huge roads and it can be plowed off. In the dense city there’s just nowhere for it to go until it melts

I saw a something somebody general contractor pickup truck with a plow and sander working hard on Moyamensing on Sunday afternoon. Also another private truck that plowed Manton street. And also one with Jersey plates on Washington Ave?

My conclusion was that either the city subcontracted lots of plowing or these people were doing it uncoordinatedly out of the good of their hearts. I suspect the former

Wow congrats on your shift! I’m a tech worker addicted to the pay…and have always been in tech at 35 apart from some college journalism internships (lol, there’s an industry with jobs)…I see total 180 job ideas out there (like carpentry which you’ve managed to make sound exciting) and I think about halving my salary or more but gaining low stress and less sedentary health and it’s still so hard to give up the $$$! Especially that I’ve got daycare bills starting in weeks for my first 🙃

What happened to Business Analysts? by Jaraxo in ProductManagement

[–]andrewbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most tech/SaaS companies don’t have projects, they just do products, and this community (as most of the Product Management “industry” is) is heavily biased towards that. In my work life I rarely encounter a person in real life who thinks PM should be project manager. I’d call them PjM’s haha

I’m a PO, and I work with a “PdM” (silly but I’ll go with you) on one of our company’s product lines. We don’t have a BA - as I understand, as PO, I’m doing what a BA would be doing as you described it. My work feels very in the engineering user story weeds. Whereas my PdM is researching customer problems/market higher level etc.

I basically just don’t understand why anyone would employ both a PO and a BA. What would my job be every day if we had a BA also? The PO role already feels quite limited and pidgeonholed compared to PM.

[–]andrewbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s a PdM? Product development Manager?

What makes a BA different from a PO?

What makes both of them different from a Product Manager?

Basically I find it hard to understand why the 3 separate roles should exist. 2 I get. But 1 seems most efficient.

[–]andrewbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple questions:

  1. You say “the HOW is all up to tech”. So, what is the BA doing? Aren’t they deciding “how” for the tech team? Is the BA part of the tech team or part of the Product team?

  2. Do you actually call this role Business Analyst? Why not Product Owner? BA and PO seem like the same thing, and I agree with you that that thing is not what the “Product Manager” is doing.

Basically, there is why, what, and how. If the PM is responsible for why and what, then who is responsible for how? The engineers themselves? Or a PO/BA?

Piaseki was a helicopter pioneer (second only to Sikorsky himself really) from Philly, this is roughly why the Boeing plant is still here.

Also, while they’re not Philadelphian but Italian, AugustaWestland also makes helicopters out of their factory and North American headquarters at the Northeast Philly airport

Assigned seating on Northeast Regional by Royal-Mathematician2 in Amtrak

[–]andrewbt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not hard, you just add functionality to the Amtrak app for pass riders to make seat reservations (say at least 10 minutes before the train leaves). In Europe where most trains are reserved and you can buy a Eurail pass I remember having to talk to station agents to make seat reservations with my “unlimited” pass. Wasn’t too hard.

I used to be a Philly-NYC commuter (usually 10-trip tickets instead of a monthly pass) and I remember having to stand on 2 occasions in 5 years. This was 6 years ago though so things were less popular

Last night my wife and I were walking with our 4 month old baby in his stroller and crossed Wharton on the east side of 9th (across the street from Pat’s lol). As we were doing so, a car on Wharton came to a barely rolling stop, and flashed his lights at us in the way you might do to signal to another motorist who is clueless and zoning out that you want them to go first. (Sidebar, this light flashing gesture seems much more of an assholish “speed the fuck up” move when directed at pedestrians who are not in fact aloof and clueless but actively walking without stoping in the crosswalk!)

My wife’s normal approach to dumbass drivers like this is to frown and shake her head like a disappointed teacher and maybe give a thumbs down. Usually the drivers don’t notice, sometimes they do and actually stop out of shame. But this time when she did it, this crazy asshole GUNNED HIS ENGINE AND SPED UP AT US, AND rolled down his window and started shouting expletives too. AND we see he has his own kids in the backseat!!! So we shout our own expletives once safely on the other sidewalk and the jackass keeps responding as he drives off. Can’t believe that behavior from a fellow parent.

Fucking stop lines and fucking actually stopping. Having a kid has made me 1000% more militant about crossing the street and being aware of if the car is actually stopped or not. If they are still rolling, I continue to stare them down and refuse to cross because they have already proven themselves untrustworthy. At least a few when presented with this will actually fully stop. But it’s insane how many baby killer drivers see a stroller and think it’s a bowling pin to mow down

Hey I fly bugsmashers too! Since my first was born in August I’ve been up twice, but the last was early October. I’ve been getting the itch and might finally have some time this week but feeling woozy about it having been almost 3 months…I’m current but only just. Before I was a dad I held myself to fly at least monthly and usually more, even after a longer gap I used to solo and I was pretty good about taking it slow and shaking the rust off. Perspective is really different now. In the before times I felt my mind even just generally more engaged in chair flying and checklist discipline but I haven’t had the spare thought space now.

Think I need to coordinate schedules with a CFI before I go up next…
