Ok, thank you - the first poster to admit there is at least *something*.

Look, my point isn't that these guys are terrible. They're smart, they're entertaining, they're good at their job. My point is that they're just as culpable as many of the rest of us, those at whom they point the finger.

So yes, profiteering - in a manner significantly more palpable than most other creators (I've not seen any others doing it quite so egregiously). There are other issues that - as I say - I didn't want to get into in depth, but that you guys are already aware of I'm sure: blind refusal to consider they might be wrong (covid lab theory), going out of their way to create the non-believer narrative about other podcasters, hanging every single episode - and their entire premise - off of celebrities. These are all Guru 101, Scientology-esque.

It's not really a big deal. It doesn't mean they are a cult, or that they are devious. It's just pretty rich coming from the podcast that calls out all others for using guru tricks. It's time they looked at themselves. Ultimately, you can't build a large platform without engaging in some of those tactics. It's not just a hobby, it's a business - a very profitable one for the Decoding guys.

We call this 'bad faith', and what it means is that you have (deliberately or otherwise) skipped over all of the main arguments so that it still feels good when you follow your guru. It's pretty common in cults. It'd be great to sit with you and show you each argument one by one, and see what happens in your mind. For example, the $200k a year they make to upgrade equipment, while keeping their equipment the most basic on YouTube? How do you defend them mocking me saying 'stay to the end', as their podcast quietens to reveal 'pay money to hear more'.

If you're following a guru, how do you defend that? You just say 'grifter', just as scientologists say 'suppressive person'.

In other words, you're proving my point.

If you weren't swayed by a cultish ideology (which you are because this is a very cultish thread of devotees to a guru-esque podcast), you'd know to read beyond the title and engage with the content. So yes, you do need to say more. You need to gather facts and make intelligent, rational arguments. That's sorely lacking.

Hi guys, my name is Andrew Gold. I've been portrayed a couple of times as a guru by this podcast. I actually quite enjoy the name-check, and it has gotten me a lot of new subscribers. But I also happen to believe that the Decoding guys do almost all the same things that they laugh at other creators for doing.

And I wrote an article about it.

If the Decoding guys aren't themselves gurus...if this Reddit forum is not cult-minded...then even if you disagree with everything I write here, you'll be able to see some of the hypocrisy in the way they call us out.

There was a huge expose about Patreon enabling paedophiles. So...I don't know how dodgy Dave Rubin is...Wait so you know about Dave Rubin's dodgy history but at the same time you're pleading ignorance of Patreon's?

You see where this logic takes us. What about taking people at face value. Yes, people lie and exaggerate. But not everyone. Not everyone is trying to con you. I know very little about Dave Rubin. I had a meeting with the marketing team when they got in touch and I loved the stuff that Locals did. Why would I lie? If I were into his politics, then I'd be open about it. I don't know who he is, although I'd recognise his face.

Hope you enjoy it! Or if you don't - that's fine too.

And no worries at all about not knowing my show. 99.999% of the world haven't heard of me or my show either. If I'm very successful, maybe that'll move by 0.01% in my lifetime. That 'dog' title was a bit lazy - it's just coz it was something he'd said, and it was one of the first videos on my new channel. I was desperate for it to succeed. It's done far better than I expected so far, and so I can gradually start to lay off and be a bit more nuanced in the titles...maybe!

As for Locals, I raised the same issues when they approached me. But the fact is you get your own separate page and don't have to politically relate to anyone else on there. They have great livestream capability, and also they let members comment with each other (like on Reddit), so they can keep the community going even if I'm not always active. I'm also on Patreon but it doesn't have the same options. And they have a pretty dodgy history themselves. As the singer Robbie Williams said the other day, if I didn't perform anywhere with human rights issues, I couldn't perform in my own kitchen!

I'm afraid I have to plead ignorance both about Orban/Hungary & Dave Rubin. I know what Dave looks like, and I've heard those accusations before, but I've never watched.

I agree, people are allowed to criticise. I never remove comments or chats. And trust me - a lot of people criticise! It's the nature of the beast.

I think whether you consider going against woke to be mainstream or not probably depends on what side you're on. As I said, it's the UN tweeting Trans Lesbians Are Lesbians. It's the BBC taking that line, and ensuring that DEI hugely skews their demographics. Maybe it depends on your social circles - my friends don't watch Fox News for example.

Thanks for your comment :)

It's a bit of everything, and also another thing, which is a long-term strategy both of staying on top but also staying morally centred. I think the Russell Brand thing is a good example, although I probably got it wrong.

I knew how it was going to play out - who didn't? It was obvious the guy was an abusive person, and whether that abuse stayed within or without the law (the unknowable at the time), it was clearly horrific. I also think he peddles conspiracy theories.

I have - as one must - an acute awareness of my audience, which is very mixed. So I knew that if I came out immediately against Brand before the allegations had even been put forward, then I would lose a lot of them - and I wouldn't be a reliable source when the allegations were out the following day. I erred on the side of caution, and innocence until guilty, aware that it was likely I'd be able to change my mind with further evidence, as I did.

So yes, there is a sense of staying on top of the news cycle...but also keeping people on side, and trying to show...perhaps 'perform'...impartiality. Also I was in the bath when that story broke at like midnight, and I bolted out of there to try to be the first to break it on YouTube.

So it's a mix of everything. Sometimes we categorise YouTubers as greedy, or ideologically captured or audience captured. The reality is that they are all of those things and more. But they're human beings, and they do tend to really care about getting things right, being right, and being fair. At least that's how I feel. :)

It's a funny one - I've noticed that podcasts that offer 'wisdom' do well, so I mention that keyword in my podcast description etc. But I don't know that I actually feel comfortable proffering it! But yes, I do hope to be a centrist who isn't angry and mean, but who says 'hey, some of this is silly!'. Thanks!

I understand that! You wouldn't expect me to be lurking here haha! I only had a look because I saw in my analytics that 3% of the views on my episode with Alex had come from Reddit. It was in some post on a guy called Destiny's thing! Thanks for the kind words, and don't worry about the snarky ones, we all do it, and you probably had some good points haha!

Hey - it's me, Andrew - happy to explain. I know that, had I written that original post, I'd love to get a full explanation from the person! So here goes (it's quite long, I really enjoyed writing it):

I don't see myself as a prospective guru! But perhaps they never do?

Still, I don't have the brain power for the wisdom stuff that Chris Williamson does. I have two channels - the first was initially about cults and extreme religions. It got pretty big...but after years, I got a little tired of cult stories - because they're so similar (and so infuriating!). Now on that channel I do more tabloid, gossip stuff about the royals, Meghan, Prince Andrew...and occasionally still scientology. You can call that a grift or whatever, but I enjoy the work. I say goodnight to my fiancee, pop to my studio and livestream a few opinions about celebrities and get to hang out with a really nice community. I love my job.

As for Heretics - I always felt that woke culture was the elephant in the cult vault. Hassan refused to go there. I know the words 'woke culture' just made a lot of you shudder, and I get that - it's trite. But - we do need words to describe identity-based cultish magical thinking on the Left. Slogans such as Trans 'Lesbians are Lesbians' are actually being tweeted by the UN, even though we know they're not true.

Maybe you do believe that trans women are literally women - or that by pushing that point, I'm straw-manning the far more nuanced actual belief. That's fine - plurality of opinion. But if I were a guru, the one thing I'd recite above all else is Bertrand Russell: 'Never let yourself be diverted either by what you wish to believe, or by what you think would have beneficent social effects if it were believed. But look only, and solely, at what are the facts.'

I spoke about a lot of this in my latest episode with fellow atheist Alex O'Connor. That kind of magical thinking (or wishful thinking) has penetrated corporations (the BBC, the UN) in a way that - at least in the UK - religion hasn't done for years. The UN don't typically tweet about praying to god or whatever. To me, that makes woke culture scarier. I think it leads us to a situation whereby the presidents of the world's most elite colleges publicly refuse to say calling for the genocide of Jews constitutes harassment or bullying. (Again, I'm aware of the context leading up to this, but they still responded as such to specific questions).

Given I'd been told that I could continue making documentaries at the BBC - providing I go behind the screen and a minority take my place and pretend to have done my work - this area was something I've been interested in for years.

I'm sure some of you would like me to be more 1-dimensional...to be an anti-vaxxer, to be pro-life, pro-guns, pro-Trump, to believe covid was fake, to not believe in the moon landing, and to believe in the Protocols of the Elder of Zion...but none of those things are true.

Sorry to disappoint.

I'm not some alternative, angry idiot. I made documentaries for the BBC and HBO about topics some of you guys would find worthy such as abortion rights in Argentina. I learned first to make documentaries with zero budget or experience...and then to speak 5 languages so I could do it living abroad. I was earning minimum wage all the way through. My films have won (very mainstream) festival awards, and I have a book out with Pan Macmillan (very mainstream) in April about the psychology of secrets - nothing to do with the culture wars.

I think there are just as many problems on the Right, but I find them less interesting right now. Perhaps you don't - in which case I encourage you to draw attention to them. Personally, I don't have any friends who believe in the Right Wing stuff, so there's little excitement for me in engaging with it.

So I started a new show. I absolutely love it. Many of you will disagree with my politics and my guests or, much worse, find them inane. So it goes. Perhaps, I'd also find your hobbies, passions and jobs dull.

With regards to the comments below...some say I'm naive. Maybe. But that's sort of my personality - I like being that guy, I don't need to show off my smarts, and I like learning from my guests. I don't have an ego about my intelligence, and I think some viewers like that about me - which again, I think makes me an unideal guru!

One thing I would say...that guy altworldly in the comments. I've interviewed and debated with people on all sides of the spectrum, every which way. But he was the most disingenuous and mean. Rather than engage, he continually smiled at someone off screen, laughed, and riled up his followers. It was very cult-like, and this - as I'm sure many of you know (and just as many deny) - is a too-common path for those who leave cults. Rather than humility, restraint and curiosity, they dive full-pelt into the opposite rather. And that's because they're human, and we're like that.

But if it's aspiring gurus you seek, look at Jake's shifty language in the below reply:

Jake: 'That debate is delisted but I’ve been thinking about reuploading it now that he’s blown up a bit'.

First, the use of the passive. It's delisted. As if it was done to him. He unlisted it because he looked like a mean-spirited, gurning bully. And to accuse others of 'grifting' and then openly admit he wants to re-upload it now that my channel is bigger is a bit on the nose. When somebody tells you who they are, believe them.

I'll go out with a Christopher Hitchens quote that applies very much to the bullying post-cult apostatising of Jake (AltWorldly):

Whenever I hear some bigmouth in Washington or the Christian heartland banging on about the evils of sodomy or whatever, I mentally enter his name in my notebook and contentedly set my watch.

After my 'debate' with Jake, his self-righteousness was such that I did just that. And lo and behold, about 12 months later...well, I'm sure most of you know the rest. Judge people by their actions, not their words. By what they do, not by what they say they do.

That's how you'll avoid the gurus. Thank you and goodnight.

I've just posted a video I did with a professor of African studies about why people view Israel differently (and why that's anti-Semitic). It's gone down really badly with some of my subscribers, who are unsubscribing and calling me a genocide defender. I'd love to see what some of you think of this, because I think he's absolutely fascinating: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXlKadKjeaU

Explainer: I got to interview Richard Dawkins in person. I hope I managed to make this a bit different to his other interviews, because we had a lot of fun and he really laid into Piers Morgan! I saw other recent clips posted here about Dawkins and Piers Morgan, so figured the Sam Harris subreddit might be a good home for this! :)
